Justin's not even really sure if the name will be used and it seems as though he's only interested in doing something if a record contract is slipped under his door. He's got to know that record companies aren't that interested in anyone who isn't a busty teenager, certainly not a bunch of hairy geezers (as I'm sure Del Amitri may be viewed by the youth of today). I fail to understand why they don't follow the example of people like David Gray or Aimee Mann, and make a record on their own dime and release it themselves. Call it Del Amitri, call it The Sideboard Express, call it Justin & Iain, whatever... He and Iain can lock themselves away writing the most brilliant songs ever, but if they're gonna wait for a record man with a contract to come knocking on the door, we're never gonna hear those songs. A self-released record that did well would likely make them more money than a release on an established label. It might also attract the attentions of labels who would be shown that "Oh, people DO still want to buy records from these guys." They've got the talent and a loyal fan base, what they seem to lack is the desire to do it themselves. Dave Sills PS - shameless self promotion: my album Sometimes Nothing is now available from iTunes Music Stores throughout the known universe and also from other legal download services. My new album is nearing completion (a few overdubs and a final mix) and will be out in spring. ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V7 #9 ********************************
