I promise his shows are worthy or your interest. The Austin, Texas based Montgomery works three-piece, (bass, drums & guitar), but do not expect another Stevie Ray clone. Yes, he plays blues licks, along with jazz and just about any other style you care to mention, however, in the end, it is his pop sensibilities that carrry the day. This is a guitarist unlike any you have seen. His original compositions are melodically oriented and nicely complimented by a somewhat quirky but very nice voice that works a big range. However, it is his guitar playing that takes this show completely over the top. His original songs run the gamut of ballad, love-songs, power pop,and nicely conceived philosophic constructs for the purpose of lengthy guitar explorations. During the course of an evening with Monte you will hear him tip his hat to his many and diverse teachers, among them, George Harrison, Lindsay Buckingham, Jimi Hendrix, Mark Knofler, and Pete Townshend, sometimes in the form of a classic phrase inserted into an instrumental passage in another song, and sometimes in complete form. A few examples of his wonderful choices in covers: Sarah Smile, (Hall & Oates); World Turning, (Fleetwood Mac); Pinball Wizard, (The Who), Little Wing, (Hendrix). The kicker about this is that he performs all this material on his well-worn Alvarez Yairi Acoustic-Electric guitar. Trust me, if you haven't seen Monte, this is something radically different than any other guitarist you've ever previously encountered. Also, Monte has a pretty good sense of humour onstage. I dare ya to request "Freebird" at one of hs shows. Here is his calendar for the next few days: 10/29 Canopy Club Urbana, Illinois 7 PM 11/1 FitzGeralds Berwyn, Illinois 8:30 PM 11/2 Shank Hall Milwaukee, WI 8 PM 11/3 Blueberry Hill St. Louis, MO 10:15 PM 11/4 George's Majestic Fayetteville, AR 9 PM 11/6 Hard Rock Cafe Dallas, TX 10:30 PM Later, Ed Minton Joplin, MO ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V6 #123 **********************************
