It's really only relevant to people in the UK and Ireland, so the rest of you can delete now! I'm looking for venues for gigs for an artist. They're still in that "waiting to be discovered by a record label" stage but he's got some interesting media reviews, toured with Aqualung etc... Anyhow we're really looking for bars/venues with a guaranteed crowd. I know in Belfast there's a bar called Katy Daly's that is well known for music and you're guaranteed at least the very least 30-40 people at it, they also tend to host a lot of new acts type nights or singer songwriter gigs. I only know this cause I've got the local knowledge. I'm hoping you guys can help by providing similar sorts of venues for where you live. If you are going to reply, don't forget to mention the town you're from!!!! Anyhow, thanks for your help Andy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Aug 2004 14:10:15 +0100 From: "Mojo T Monkey" Subject: OV: Re: OT - venues for gigs In Dublin you have Whelan's of Wexford Street. I don't listen to actual CDs as such anymore, so here's the lowdown from my iPod and iTunes: The "Top 25 Most Played" built-in playlist is filled with tracks from: The Uncle Devil Show--"A Terrible Beauty" (multiple songs) Del Amitri--"Can You Do Me Good" (multiple songs) Shelby Lynne--"I Am Shelby Lynne" (multiple songs) Cousteau (now known as Moreau, due to legal issues, apparently)--"Last Good Day of the Year" (just that song) Franky Perez & the Highway Saints--"Something Crazy" (just that song) When I sort by the "Last Played" column: The Uncle Devil Show--"A Terrible Beauty" The Adventures--"The Sea of Love" (Hi, Libby!) Тату--"200 По Встречной" --or-- TATU--"200 km/h in the Wrong Lane" Cowboy Mouth--"Uh-Oh" Queen--"News of the World" Jane Siberry--"Maria" and "Bound by the Beauty" Depeche Mode--"Songs of Faith and Devotion" and some Rachmaninov, Schubert, and Bizet Kelly Minneapolis ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Aug 2004 19:58:06 +0000 From: "Alia Husain" Subject: RE: OV: Spinning in my CD-Player I love Idlewild. From: Dirk.Wonhoefer@eberle-augsburg.de To: oppositeview@smoe.org Subject: OV: Spinning in my CD-Player Date: Tue, 3 Aug 2004 08:29:36 +0200 Hi all, well, the below is not a top-10 list, it's just that my car CD-changer has got 10 slots ... 1. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the aeroplane over the sea (great harmonic and verrrry acoustic album. my No.1 album at the time) 2. Joey Cape and Tony Sly - Accoustic (another wonderful acoustic album) 3. David and the citizens - Until the sadness is gone (take Coldplay, give 'em more folk, more spirit, more liveliness, and you got David and the citizens) 4. Bright Eyes - Lifted or the story is in the soil keep your ear to the ground (among with Justin Currie one of my favorite 3 singer/songwriters. Great album, besides) 5. Desaparecidos - Read music speak spanish (funny punk-pop with great lyrics) 6. John Vanderslice - Cellar door (another excellent singer/songwriter) 7. Sebadoh - Bakesale (one of Lou Barlow's various bands) 8. Bill Janovitz - Up here (former Buffalo Tom frontman's second solo album) 9. Badly drawn boy - The hour of the bewilderbeast (good singer/songwriter in my opinion) 10. Idlewild - The remote part (great scottish band, anyone knows this album?) phew ... took me some time to reconstruct what's in my CD player at the moment ... Fleming! There you are... good to see you remembered OV and decided to rejoin the living. Ah, the perpetual 'whassontheturntable' question, always fun to divulge a secret isn't it? Here's what's spinning in my studio these days: Summer Hymns "Value Series Vol. 1 Fool's Gold" ~a brand new disc from an Athens Ga. band, these guys are a constant on the turntable. Their sound? Think Neil Young meets REM but with much improved musicianship Al Petteway "Midsummer Moon" ~absolutely the finest Celtic-flavored guitarist on the planet, this one of Al's is new to me but dates back to 1995; had to have it to complete the set and its not a disappointment. He's amazing! Jonny Lang "Long Time Coming" ~remember this kid from a few years back when he was only 14 or 15 and played with nearly as much kick as Stevie Ray? Well he's legal age now and has moved past the 'blues' limitation to create a terrific, unique sound of his own. I think Stevie is proud of this kid - his influence still can be heard but the boy's become a man now Delirious "World Service" ~they've got to be the best Christian 'praise' band to ever come from England. Thank the Lord they finally got back to the rock sound of 'Deeper', always my favorite ('I Could Sing of Your Love Forever' is a classic, sure, but I just love an edgier approach...) Detour 180 "Detour 180" ~saw these boys last autumn at a festival and was quite impressed, to the point of doing a little jumping & shouting if you know what I mean... that's quite a stretch for a shy, subdued little bluesmama like me TTFN Susan Gardner ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Aug 2004 19:10:12 -0700 (PDT) From: doug brown Subject: RE: OV: Re: Spinning in my CD-Player I get most of my music fix from downloaded videos these days, most played are: Del Amitri - Tell Her This (VH1 Live - really!)
