It makes you wonder why they bothered to release A Terrible Beauty at all if they couldn't be bothered to do anything with it. I gave a copy of it to my friend Richard who's worked in the industry for years and although he plays with the Otway band and Eddie and the Hot Rods notoriously listens to classical music because doesn't like much contemporary music or many other musicians - though he thinks Justin's one of the best songwriters around. I wanted to know what he made of it and he absolutely loved it and thinks it's one of the best albums he's heard in years, which is praise indeed coming from him. He was surprised too that it hadn't been followed up. With Peter Noble on side I'm sure that if they really wanted it UDS could have got a tour and a lot more publicity, but I guess they just aren't interested enough. After all, Justin can get royalties from Tarka's Bimbo without having to lift a finger. I notice that Kevin McDermott is doing a fairly major (for him) UK tour in the autumn - so I guess that rules out more UDS stuff. UDS' original version is way better though - and I say that even though I've always found it one of the weaker songs on the album. The NME review that pops up when you got to tarkamusic.com mentions something about Tarka being Keith Richards' adopted son. Weird. Now what act will be smart enough to cover the hit-single-in-waiting "She Cuts Her Own Fringe"? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jul 2004 00:25:04 -0500 (EST) From: armoudo@earlham.edu Subject: Re: OV: RE: Bimbo in a Limo by Tarka This is maybe a bit of a weird question. But is Justin really a part of UDS? He flatly denies it. Where did the rumor start that he was a part of UDS? I've listened to considerable snipets of the album while it seems that that lead singer has some similarities it seems that it may not be Justin. While again it seems that a great band has not recieved the recognition it deserves. What makes this band so different from so many other great bands that never have much commercial success. It seems that the only thread that is holding people's attention to UDS is the rumor that Justin is on the band. I'm over in the USA and don't get the same kind of exposure that people in England get. I haven't heard any UDS stuff on any college radio (I am a college student). I don't mind discussing UDS and their lack of touring or lack of popularity, but it seems that we are just mulling and obsessing about the fact that Del Amitri a group that we love and hold dear did not make it. Which pisses me off. I've had many of my friends listen to it at college every single one of them loves the Del boys. I've seemed to ahve lost my train of thought and point. I guess I would suggest that people check out Beulah an excellent group from the Elephant Six amalgamation. Thanks for bearing with my dribble. Hmmm well the guy I was standing less than two feet away from at the UDS gig was either Justin or Justin's double. He looked exactly like him, sounded like him, and when I spoke to him afterwards, he called me by name so if it wasn't Justin then some stranger knows my name and that spooks me out! Also, the fact that Andy Alston was in the audience and Iain Harvie was on the guest list (though alas he didn't turn up) implies that someone in the band knows Del Amitri. So I would say that the evidence in my eyes is pretty clear. Jane PS don't forget that although Jason Barr sings on quite a few tracks, some of the songs on the album were sung by Langton Herring and Angie Baby was sung by Terrence - so the vocals won't always sound like Justin. ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V6 #80 *********************************
