A very quick visit from lurkdom to offer my thanks to the suggestions and recommendations of members...matchbox 20, minibar, and now fountains of wayne all helping to fill the vacuum post-dels (sorry, but UDS is a pale immitation, fun for a while but not nearly satisfying enough). One issue though, Wilco's YHF? Is it just me that doesn't get it? It made me remember an obscure Monty Python track from the Contractual Obligation album 'I like traffic lights'. However, it's a minor gripe in the grand scheme of things. And by way of returning the favour, for those who haven't discovered them, look out for Razorlight. Back to lurkdom for me, thanks again... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jul 2004 13:03:08 +0100 From: "Jane Armstrong" Subject: OV: RE: Music's dead - it's official Nigel You'd like Guilfest this year (www.guilfest.co.uk) - bands playing include The Damned, The Stranglers, The Alarm (yes, a Welsh band!) and Eddie and The Hot Rods. Headliners are UB40, Blondie and Simple Minds - and other acts I'm looking forward to are Tim Booth from James, The Levellers (always fun), Rolf Harris (for a laugh), The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, Midge Ure, Hamsters (though their act is a bit boring) and Space Ritual (ex Hawkwind). OK so most of these acts have been around for 30 years now but they can still play a storm and appeal to the next generation. My sons are big fans The Hot Rods (though that's mainly because our friend Richard plays guitar for them) and The Stranglers, whom they've seen play there the previous two years. There are some good new bands around playing the pub and club scene, but sadly they don't stand a chance in today's commercial industry. I've heard a couple of brilliant bands recently where they've written their own material and play their own instruments (a strange concept in this day and age I know) and the band members have been in their late teens/early 20's. But they don't fit the boy band mould and won't compromise their music, so the big labels just aren't interested. Even if they do take out an option on them more often than not this isn't taken up. And if you don't reach No 1 with all your singles the big labels drop them. Look at Gareth Gates - two years ago he was one of the biggest acts around with the singles audience. Now he's been dropped by his record company. I just hope that the internet will play a larger part in things. More and more people are hearing new bands this way - rather than on the radio - and hopefully paying to download tracks. They will then go and see these bands live and perhaps slowly the big monopolies will start to lose their stranglehold. I can understand your disillusionment Nigel - I think we all feel pretty much the same way. I finally broke down and bought their CD for my daughter for Christmas and I was surprised at how much I liked it. Amy Lee, their lead singer, is from Arkansas, of all places. Their guitarist and co-founder, Ben Moody, recently left the band, though, so I do not know how the next round with them will be. He was replaced by a guitarist formerly of the band Cold. There are actually several new bands out that my kids like that I am finding myself enjoying as well. My son loves Newfound Glory and my daughter is currently listening to Maroon Five, Velvet Revolver, Modest Mouse, and the Beastie Boys, as well as those cuties Rooney and Bowling for Soup. I took her to see Sum 41 about a year ago and they were great live. Nothing like a group of young punks that can play their own instruments, rock, and sound even better live then on their CD's. There is a local radio station here in Springfield which, although they play the same rotation over and over, they play songs by Switchfoot, Hoobastank, Dashboard Confessional, the Beasties, Velvet Revolver, STP, Rage Against the Machine, old Nirvana, Travis, Jet...etc. I still consider myself a music snob, but I think as I get older, I am becoming either more open-minded or just lazy. ;) lizo ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Reid and Susan Gardner" To: "debbsc67" , Subject: Re: OV: Re: oppositeview-digest V6 #73 Date: Thu, 1 Jul 2004 04:32:14 -0400 ----- Original Message ----- From: "debbsc67" To: "Reid and Susan Gardner" Sent: Monday, June 28, 2004 12:58 PM Subject: Re: OV: Re: oppositeview-digest V6 #73 > Susan (or anyone) have you heard a band called > Evanescence? Evanescence has been on our turntable since right after we heard some of the songs in that movie 'Daredevil'. I like 'Bring Me To Life' a lot, but I think my favorite song is 'Tourniquet'. Amy Lee has one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard; what a powerhouse. The guitar work on the album is good too, which is of course a 'must-have' for me to like it... I've also got Sanctus Real, Detour 180 and Switchfoot on the turntable too. Good bands, all of them. Oh, a new find is Summer Hymns - think Neil Young meets REM and that's kinda what they sound like. May I ask everyone a question too, regarding the Dels web site www.delamitri.co.uk... now I'm usually the last to know but yesterday I went there and was shocked to see its turned into a Uncle Devil Show ad with only a discussion forum and somebody named Dom's email address as webmaster. I thought I spotted Alison, Jane and Hilary on the members list but with so many alias listed I didn't recognize anyone else... (Alison, I did visit your site too and was relieved to see its still as cool as ever!) Where in the dickens did Kevin's site go??? Is Kev still here on OV??? That's quite a lineup, Jane! I take it you'll be there. When is this happening? I saw The Damned here in Dallas several years ago. Patricia (I think that's her name) wasn't singing with them at the time, yet, if that helps datewise. (I'm a terrible judge of time.) I absolutely LOVED The Alarm (even if they're Welsh), but isn't Mike Peters the only original member of the band playing now? UB40, Blondie, Simple Minds, huh? What a blast from the past! I'm sure you'll have a great time. Wish I was there. ;-) debbie Jane Armstrong wrote: Nigel You'd like Guilfest this year (www.guilfest.co.uk) - bands playing include The Damned, The Stranglers, The Alarm (yes, a Welsh band!) and Eddie and The Hot Rods. It's got a catchy tune and interesting lyrics. And I love her voice, too. I've just got the Switchfoot CD, but haven't taken the time to really listen to it. On first listen, it is something I know I'll like. I've not heard of the others on you list. I'll have to check them out. I'm with you on the guitar driven music. That's definitely the way to go. ;-) A couple of the bands I've been listening to lately would be Travis and Powderfinger. I also like Lenny Kravitz' new CD. debbie ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V6 #77 *********************************
