I haven't had the chance to see them live. But thier album The Coast is Never Clear and Yoko are excellent albums. Also Los Lonely Boys while they maybe very popular are amazing live! All three of the brothers have grown up with music. I am from the USA. So I'm not as in touch with the British music scene. Have any of you guys head of these groups? Anyway, as a suggestion from another cousin, I've started listening to them and their not bad at all. There are a few catchy songs. On a side note, by CD changer completely skipped over UDS today! My son (19 years old) has liked them from the onset and still does. I personally love the song "My Immortal" (the band version). Evanescence won two grammies at the last award show. Their lead singer, Amy Lee, has an outstanding voice. Cindy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 2004 14:08:31 -0400 From: "William Kates" Subject: OV: Return of "What's in your CD player" (No Del Content Unfortunately) Hi again - just delurking long enough to thank you guys for some meaningful music conversation finally after these many months of silence. I too enjoy Fountains of Wayne a lot and although I enjoyed reading Nigel's manifesto about the state of music today, I must say that for some time now I've considered any relationship between musical quality and chart success to be purely coincidental. I'm not necessarily looking for revolution in my music these days (political or otherwise), just a good melody, maybe some instrumental ability, good sound, production etc. and maybe a well written lyric. I find that good music finds it's audience, regardless of it's place in the music biz. Just this year so far, I've logged a lot of miles in the car listening to these: Nellie McKay - Get Away From Me Not sure if this is out in Britain as yet, but what this 19 yr old can do with her mind and her Kurzweil keyboard is astounding. It didn't hurt that she had Geoff Emerick to produce her debut CD. Julia Fordham - That's Life Concrete Love was my favorite release in 2002 and this is a continuation - same producer (Larry Klein) and same sound. Not sure if the songs have the strength that the last set did - it would be amazing if they did - Concrete Love equalled Porcelain in my opinion has the best work of her career. Almost rescued from record company limbo last time by Vanguard - I say "almost" because the promotion was minimal as were the sales, but the disc did finally get out in the U.K. on Sanctuary. This one's coming in the US on August 10th, again on Vanguard. Sia - Colour the Small One Zero 7 - When It Falls I'll admit I'm a sucker for the whole Zero 7 thing - including all four of the singers on their latest CD. The Sia CD is not out over here - had to get it from Amazon.co.uk. It has a subtle quality that grows on you the more you listen. I love this stuff. Johnny A - Get Inside Formerly a session guitarist out of Boston who worked with J. Geils Band, Johnny A has produced two CDs (this is the 2nd) of stellar electric guitar instrumentals - mostly originals with a few well chosen sixties covers (Poor Side of Town). He kills live too. Jem - Finally Woken Something about this Welsh girl's CD caught my interest and made me want to see her when she came through Philadelphia, which she did Saturday night and her band was great and she was too. A total delight to meet as well. Brian Auger - Auger Rhythms Now there's a name from out of the past. I don't know if I've mentioned this on this board before, but several years ago, Auger's kids helped him reform the Oblivion Express (the next generation) and they do all the material from the glory days in the seventies as well as it's ever been done. I've seen them play live three times in the past year and although Brian will turn 65 this year, he's still as great a jazz keyboardist as ever - - maybe still reaching new peaks of greatness in his playing. This double CD is an excellent sampler of his entire career from his earliest sixties work all the way to the lastest incarnation of the group with his son Karma on drums (also produces) and his daughter Savannah on vocals. Having not seen the Oblivion Express in the seventies, I had resigned to the idea that I never would, and this new version of the group has been like a dream come true. They also did a wonderful album of mostly new material in 2000 called Voices of Other Times. Here's hoping that they soon produce that new live album they've been threatening. I could go on and on but I've probably already put enough of you to sleep already. I'd say if the music biz doesn't do it for you, just indulge yourself with artists who do. A friend has also put me onto imports (again not out here in US) by Martina Topley-Bird and Alex Parks - anyone on this list have any opinions on them? Just curious. Finally, although it's not that new, I'll really go out on a limb here with this list and admit that I love Dido's Life for Rent CD (as well as her first) - and say that for me, this is one of the rare times that popularity and music quality coincide. Cheers. It's one of those that's strong as well as beautiful. I'm really starting to like them. My aunt, who's the grandmother of the cousin with the girlfriend conncected to the band (whew, that's a mouthful, huh? ;-) said they're really nice people, too. Some of the band members played at the little church my aunt goes to in Little Rock for some function. I bet that was interesting. debbie - --- Steven & Cindy Meyer wrote: > Evanescence is very popular these days and have been > around for a few years. > My son (19 years old) has liked them from the onset > and still does.
