We've had our hopes up before, so I won't hold my breath. I hope this time, though, that it will be released. Time for the best of 2003 from my two little ears in Indiana. It was a year widely regarded by critics as better for singles than albums and I have to agree. Lots of great songs, too many to choose favorites from actually - although I do, and not so many great albums. Let's get on with it! *****2004 DOUGIE ALBUM OF THE YEAR***** Dave Matthews Some Devil When you dig my grave Could you make it shallow So that I can feel the rain After listening to Leigh, who has never liked DMB, wandering around the house singing Gravedigger in a low voice I was forced to listen to the album. It seems one way or another Dave will get you hooked. It was Crash Into Me for me, then I saw DMB live and found out what incredible musicians they are. And of course you should respect an act that can become musical giants with virtually no radio play (initially). So anyway Dave goes solo and somberly tackles death, dying and other inner demons. But ultimately its the music and the sheer beauty of the production that gets this album the 2004 Dougie. Even if you never really liked DMB you might want to give this one a try it really is a spectacular piece of work. ***Honorable Mention*** Outkast Speakerboxxx/The Love Below Shake it, shake it like a Polaroid picture There is no way to describe this double CD set, so forget anything youve heard or read about it. Forget what color the musicians are or their stupid names. This is not rap, its not hip hop, its not black music. Its just fun, amazingly inventive stuff that draws on everything from James Brown to Kraftwerk. ***Honorable Mention*** The Thorns The Thorns Many could live on what we have wasted Weve talked about this one. Great band, great songs, really really good album that could have used better production or something to showcase a little better all the talent these guys have that comes out live. - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *****2004 DOUGIE SONG OF THE YEAR***** Alkaline Trio Continental the shortest breath of your young life a long walk home on Friday night you made one last stop at the store These guys have created their own brand of pop power punk over the years and really refined the sound in their latest, darkest and probably best album Good Mourning. Ive always liked them but been disappointed that so many of their songs sound alike. This album is unfortunately no exception but the stars and moon aligned for one magnificent moment to create one of the most addicting songs Ive ever heard. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. LISTEN TO THIS SONG AT YOUR OWN RISK. Truly a grand, sweeping and even throbbing masterpiece. ***Honorable Mention*** British Sea Power Carrion Oh the heavy water how it enfolds The salt the spray the gorgeous undertow Always, always, always the sea Brilliantine mortality Oh geez, randomly downloaded this and WOW that is some kind of fuzzy guitar and pure British rock sound. Ive heard the whole album now (The Rise and Fall of British Sea Power) and good as it sounds, it REALLY makes me want to hear these guys live. Im sure they are fantastic, and I am very looking forward to seeing where they go from here. ***Honorable Mention*** Evanescence: Bring Me to Life Wake me up inside (save me) call my name and save me from the dark Universally derided as Linkin Park with a girl, for better or worse the formula works, oh how it works. And quite surprisingly given the penchant for one hit wonders in this genre, it works on the whole album (Fallen). Powerful, atmospheric, soaring music that leaves you mesmerized. Yes they will never match this and fade away but at least they had their moment in the sun (moon?) and oh what a moment. - -Doug . Yahoo! SiteBuilder - Free web site building tool.
