Hello & Happy New Year to everyone! Okay, not to sound at all dodgy & pass-the-buck-ish, but in answer to Jane's question of to whom do these potential B-side gems "belong" to, it really depends on at least one (if not both) of two things ~ 1. What was the Del's deal while with UMG regarding songs recorded but not released; and 2. What was the Del's deal regarding parting company with UMG and the ownership of any non-released recordings created during their time under the aegis of UMG... If I were to hedge a bet, I'd guess that UMG probably allowed for the eventual release of rights to any "in contract" tracks say, if they were either paid-off in full for any monetary investment made toward the creation of those tracks and/or a participation of a nominal percentage of any previously unreleased tracks revenues if and when they are ever released by the band. Now, say the guys (one, two or all of them) decide to re-record said unreleased tracks now that they are "free" of their UMG deal ~ UMG potentially may still have rights to even a new recording of these songs depending upon whether their deal with the band at the time the songs were written included some sort of participation in the band's songwriting royalties. But rights on such a level wouldn't necessarily keep the band from ultimately releasing these tracks ~ it would just mean acknowledging a few more fingers in their royalty pie, so to speak. Hell, I've also seen deals where if a record plugger helped to (successfully) promote a band on radio, etc . here in the States, they also became one of the "players" in the band's accounting nightmare of royalties & rights. Such is the reason for very, very good management, lawyers, and accountants in this business of music.... Hope that was helpful & not too confusing. I'd welcome any other points-of-view from the many working musicians on the list, especially as the game seems to continually changes for day-to-day... Also, for all those UK OVers on the list - a little off-topic tidbit. I remember asking Iain about "Everybody Knows That It's You" because we all hoped it would be on CYDMG. He said it would probably turn up on some B side or another - but of course we didn't actually get a mass of singles from that album. I wonder, if they did record it during the CYDMG sessions, if it actually "belongs" to Del Amitri or if it belongs to Universal... Jen, you're usually the expert on this sort of thing.
