Is the light good for painting, this time of year in Georgia? The Chicago Convention was in November of '98, I think. And yeah, I miss getting daily posts from that group of folks, but then, when the band quits playing, what's left to talk about? I think the reason why I was so attracted to those early 90's del Amitri albums had a lot to do with my perception that the songs and arrangements and instrumentation were very traditional, and to me, seemed to owe a stylistic debt to the Beatles and Stones and early '70's Van Morrison and Rod Stewart albums. The nod to the band's Scottish heritage in the form of mandolins and fiddles and accordians was a charming touch, too. Maybe I was way off the mark, maybe not. I still think that the best songs from WH, CE, Twisted and SOSP display good-old songwriting and a certain pride and humility in the crafsmanship of playing and singing well, and those are things that never go out of style. It's just a new tune that comes next. It occurs to me that artists like Martin Taylor, Albert Lee, and Van Morrison have made respectable careers for themselves persuing those humble, timeless qualities. I think that if Justin were to forget the popstar BS and occupy himself likewise, things would take care of themselves. One thing about it though, a successful musician is going to have to live out of his suitcase, which is something Justin seems loathe to do. Bottom line for me is, the dels were the last great rock and roll to come out of the UK. As far as negativity and sarcasm goes, I've got a taste for the stuff. Even though my friend Manuel Labor tells me that "the world, she ain't gon' last forever!", and the Rev. Billy Graham recently said that "if the Lord doesn't return soon, he'll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah...", I think there's still plenty of time left for the bullet. Actually, one of the reasons I continue to monitor OV is because I look to silver tongued DEVILS like JC to shine a little into the pit of despair, so to speak. I share his gloomy views for the most part, I'm afraid, so I guess there's some solace in misery's company. And, maybe I shouldn't let the Cat OUT of the Hat, er, bag, that is, but the UDS seems to be pointed more in the direction of the hand that feeds him than at human frailties or universal truths. But then, with what I'm smokin', paranoia knows no bounds! No matter. And while the jury's still out on that choice business, the market in Blind Faith is definitely setting records, and I've invested for all I'm worth. Ha. (Co-incidentally, don't you wish Winwood and Clapton would work together again?) I know one thing for sure, though. Me and Manuel will definitely be back on the job tomorrow. No royalties here, babe, just slip-slidin' away. So, pick your poison and let's toast to Frustration. It won't change a damn thing, but after a few belts you'll sleep better. Meanwhile, I'm crankin' up the new Robben Ford release. It's got a great version of the old Nick Lowe nugget, (What's So Funny About)Peace, Love and Understanding that features guest vocals by Mavis Staples. Mavis with a great guitar player, it works for me. Happy Holidays!
