You may be mistaken in your assumption that this particular project has not been "approved by it's creator." In order for several different parties to have obtained the complete album in advance of its release suggests that this may have reached the stage of advance promo cd, which would indicate final approval by the artist. That a record company deal fell through and delayed the release would not alter that fact. The people who offered this material, and there were more than just Dirk, might help by describing the source of the tracks. Was there a record company advance promo cd? Or did some studio engineer sneak the tracks out to the fans? Or is there some other scenario? It might be helpful to know. I must add by the way, having now heard all the tracks, that released or not, legal or not, this is essential listening for all Del fans. In a similar vein, Julia Fordham's last album "Concrete Love" was scheduled for release in 2001 by one of Atlantic's subsidiary labels. Advance promos of the cd were circulated in the industry, complete with cd cover graphics. Before the intended release date, the company folded and the release was cancelled. Julia then had to shop for another label and almost a year passed before it was finally released on Vanguard. A friend of mine in the industry was kind enough to pass me an advance which I enjoyed for all of that time while the release was in limbo. When it finally did come out, I bought it not once but twice - once as first released in America, and again as an import with bonus tracks. Interestingly, the final Vanguard version of the album contains a revised version of the title track with guest vocals by singer India.arie. This would never have happened without the cirulation of the advance promo cd. India happened to hear or receive a copy of the advance promo, and liked it so much that she contacted Julia, and offered to add her vocals to the song. The import, by the way, has both versions. Mike Gomoll wrote: My two cents - If the band wants MP3s of their record floating around before it is released so that the faithful can hear it, they have plenty of places to do it - Alison's Dels Page, Kevin's Dels page, the KMO pages. But it is their decision to release them (even to the most ardent, loyal, brave, trustworthy, devoted fans) not the fans or anyone elses. You can rationalize it all you want, but if they wanted it done, they could easily do it and since they haven't done so yet.. It doesn't matter how good your intentions are, or honorable your motives or sincere you are about buying everything they release - it is THEIR work, THEIR art and THEIR livelihood. Copying and distributing commercially available work that has not been approved by its creator is wrong. I'm off to photocopy the new Carl Hiaasen novel and post it to my webpage.
