Bloomin' great band!!! Kris was well underused in Del Amitri and really comes out of himself with this band. He's like a different person. He can get some amazing sounds out of that guitar! Anyone who has already downloaded War Machine from www.thegermans.co.uk will have some idea of how they sound. Punk but with maturity. Rat Scabies is a Damned fine drummer ('scuse the pun!) and has hardly changed at all - I was watching the Young Ones the other day and he hardly looks any older than he did in 1984. I used to go the Cartoon frequently about 17 years ago but it's changed out of all recognition since then. There are no windows and the front door is a plain black solid door, so when my friend and I arrived it looked like it was all closed up. Nevertheless we opened it, to be confronted by two enormous Hells Angels - complete with leathers, tattoos and body piercing. A little daunting for two middle aged housewives! The ladies behind the counter were both fully fledged punkettes- black make up and Mohicans - as were the bar staff. However although they all looked fairly threatening and we felt we might just be a little out of place there (to put it mildly!!) they were perfectly charming and really friendly. There was a completely mad bloke collecting glasses too. He came round every table and introduced himself and kissed all the ladies' hands. He even sat down and told us all about his grandchild - which made us feel old as he was younger than we were! The audience was pretty sparse and mainly consisted of members of the Damned and the Godfathers' equivalent of OV. Many of them were aging punks - 40 something's with Mohicans and dressed in black - but they too were incredibly friendly and we had a great time chatting to them. Well I say chatting - maybe I should say TRYING to chat. The music on the "disco" consisted of some of Britain's best punk anthems played at full volume. There were two support acts. The first one was absolutely DIRE - but interesting to watch, and the second, The Pork Dukes (heavily supported by someone I knew from the Otway list) was positively pornographic - made all the worse by the fact that the songs about how good this guy was in the bedroom dept were sung by a short guy in his 50's with one of the biggest beer bellies I've seen (and no shirt!). Not exactly my idea of a turn on! However, it was all worth it when the Germans came on. They started off with War Machine which had a rich full sound which belied that fact that they only had three instrumentalists. It was a great start to the act. They went on to play a range of numbers with pretty catchy hooks - we were all singing along despite the fact that we'd never heard them before. One of the tracks they sang was an incredible cover of 70's electronic band Kraftwerk's Autobahn !!! Absolutely inspired. Kris's guitar replaced all the electronic keyboards and sounded great. There were other songs about Iggy Pop for US President and another called Action - all delivered with vitriolic vocals by Mr Coyne. All too soon the gig ended - I could have listened for another hour at least - but as a new band playing new material I guess there is only so much they can do. But I really look forward to hearing them again. Had a very brief chat with Kris - who said he really didn't think it was the sort of stuff I'd like. How wrong he was! It was about as far removed from Del Amitri as you could get, but I grew up with 70's punk. I asked him what Iain was doing - since no-one seems to have heard much about him. Apparently he's managing Eastern Lane now, the band that he and Kris produced last year. (Got their album the other day - which has very tiny photos of both ex-Dels on the back). It'll be a shame if he decides that's what he wants to do in future and doesn't decide to grace the stage again :-( Jane - -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ - -~ - -~-~ Visit my website: http://www.janea.me.uk or http://www.janea.me.uk/Delpage.html MSN Messenger: janea57@hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Aug 2003 19:58:31 +0100 From: "Claire O'Rourke" Subject: OV: Article Taken from todays Daily Record. I'm soooooooo excited and I can't wait till Saturday!!!!! DEL JUSTIN PLAYS FOR BUTTONS Aug 19 2003 SCOTS rocker Justin Currie has joined a new Scottish supergroup after being forced to disband Del Amitri. The former chart star is fronting Button Up and will be performing soul jazz cover songs as part of the band's Scottish tour this weekend. The all-star group features Proclaimers guitarist Stuart Nisbet and drummer Ross McFarlane - who also played with chart-toppers Stiltskin - bassist Gary John Kane and keyboard player Andy May. Among the set list will be the Gladys Knight & The Pips song Just Walk In My Shoes, Don Cavay's It's Better To Have And Don't Need, Nina Simone's I'm Gonna Leave You and Birdie Green's gospel song The Return Of The Prodigal Son. Justin said: "It's all covers. We're not writing anything or doing any Scottish music and it's for the fun of it. We're not taking it seriously and we love this kind of music. We're playing to a couple of hundred people in small venues. "We're not doing it for money or exposure, just because we really love playing. "It's songs I've always wanted to sing but couldn't do with Del Amitri because I'm not a good enough bass player." He added: "Button Up had been playing nightclubs doing fabulous soul jazz instrumentals and one night I bumped into Ross in the pub and complained I needed something to do. "He wanted me to do a couple of songs and now I am doing four gigs at which I'll be singing a 40-minute set." Meanwhile, Justin insists it isn't the end of the road for Del Amitri, despite his extended hiatus after being dropped by their label. Founder member and lead guitarist Iain Harvie has turned his hand to producing other bands, keyboard player Andy Alston is working as a teacher, rhythm guitarist Kris Dollimore has joined a band called The Germans and drummer Mark Price is a London bus driver. Justin said: "We're not really doing very much, though technically we still exist. Everyone is busy doing other things. We were offered shows not so long ago, but couldn't do them because the guys in the band all have jobs." Button Up are at Forres East Grange Loft on August 21, Aberdeen Lemon Tree (22), Glasgow's G2 (23) and Edinburgh Speigeltent (25). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Aug 2003 18:41:03 +0100 From: "warrington" Subject: OV: DEL JUSTIN PLAYS FOR BUTTONS From the Daily Record 19/8/03: DEL JUSTIN PLAYS FOR BUTTONS SCOTS rocker Justin Currie has joined a new Scottish supergroup after being forced to disband Del Amitri. Alison gave us a challenge a while back to see if we could figure out how the songs were connected (the theme) or something along those lines. Well, I think I may have the answer...an answer, anyway, my first guess.... Is it that each song makes reference to another band or musician? debbie __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
