I think they've lost that special feeling and she's not up to working on it and fixing their relationship, she's made up her mind that it's over. That's why "she's got the wheel". I keep thinking thaat "now the kid has gone" refers to the fact that their kid has grown up and moved away from home. I know several couples who broke up just about that time in their lives, like they've lost the one thing that kept them together. Happy to oblige, I'm sad enough to keep old OV posts of interest.... :-) Hilary ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: Andrew Brown Subject: O.V. TOTW: Billy Goats Gruff Date: Tuesday, March 23, 1999 4:57AM Personally, I think you+re all barking up the wrong tree with this abortion lark. Below is my definitive guide to DWTBO. DRIVING WITH THE BRAKES ON >Driving through the long night (Self explanatory: It+s evening!) >Trying to figure who's right and who's wrong. (Again obvious, him and the missus have had a bust up) >Now the kid has gone. (Here+s the crux of the song, and the cause of the disagreement. They+ve just been to the abattoir to have their baby goat put down. It had been unwell for some time and frankly Justin was fed up with sharing their Glasgow studio flat with the smelly animal, especially when it kept eating his sidies (see the photos in the Change Everything Album). This is the final straw and he insists that the goat has to go. She was not at all happy with this but he got his way in the end.) >I sit belted up tight, (As a result of her anger she has that cold glazed look in her eyes and is driving like a crazed maniac.) >She sucks on a match light, glowing bronze, steering on. (On the way to the abattoir the goat saw the signpost and correctly jumped to the right conclusion. Seeing his impending doom he understandably shat himself causing a hell of a stink in the car. Justin+s other half is now trying to disguise the smell by chain smoking cigarettes.) >And I might be more of a man if I stopped this in it's tracks and said, come on, let's go home. But she's got the wheel, (Justin+s realised that they+re going the wrong way but is far to scared to mention this fact considering the mood she+s in.) >And I've got nothing except what I have on. (Dawning realisation that he+s left his wallet at the abattoir.) >When you're driving with the brakes on. (In her haste to get away from the abattoir she forgot to take the handbrake off. The friction is causing clouds of smoke to billow through the back seat of the car. (It+s a bit clapped out and the exhaust needed replacing anyway.) >When you're swimming with your boots on, (The goat really let fly and now the car is swimming in the brown stuff.) It's hard to say you love someone, And it's hard to say you don't. (The mixture of cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes and sloppy goat manure has combined to cause a noxious gas. Both the occupants of the car are now choking. Justin can+t even manage to ask his other half to open the window, let alone tell her he loves her.) >Trying to keep the mood right, trying to steer the conversation from The thing we've done. (Having smashed the window the air has cleared. Justin, is now trying to stay sombre and repress that irresistible urge to tell her the joke "What do you call a goat that lip syncs? (A: Billy-Vanilli! - Sorry that was awful). Alternatively, he may be ravenously hungry and in dire need of a kebab but feels such a request might be a little insensitive the present time.) >She shuts up the ashtray, (The fresh air has obviously calmed her down a bit as she puts out her 23rd cigarette.) >and I say it's a long way back now hon (Seeing this as a good sign Justin decides now is the moment to mention that they+ve been driving the wrong way for the last two hours.) >She just yawns. (Nope, he misread that, she+s still ignoring him.) >And we might get lost someplace, So desolate that no one where we're from would ever come (At this rate they+ll be in Bognor Regis soon.) >But she's got the wheel and I've got to deal from now on. (Justin knows that she+ll bite his head off if he criticises her driving any more so he figures it would be better to keep his trap shut.) >But unless the moon falls tonight, unless continents collide, Nothing's gonna make me, break from her side. (The goat poo has now hardened and set like concrete. Justin realises it+s going to take a lot of force to prise them both from their fake leopard skin seats. The possibility of spending the rest of his days in a rusting Mini Cooper scares him and, like the goat before him, he too fills his trousers - If you listen carefully you+ll find the lyrics say 'incontinents collide+.) So, there you have it, end of discussion! (As if!) My take is that it doesn't necessarily involve and actual car ride at all - it could be taken totally as metaphor - when "she's got the wheel" it means that she's taken control and is making the decisions; "I've got to deal" simply means that he's stuck with or accepting (reluctantly) the situation. When you and your husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend/whatever are at odds, everyday life can feel like driving with the brakes on, swimming with your boots on, etc. This is one of the most perceptive and amazing songs in the Del Amitri catalog,in which the songwriting, playing, singing, and production are all at their abolute peak. I cringed when I saw Roe v. Wade on the board but I'm grateful that it stimulated this thread. " Yes I do too as long as the debate doesn't get too precious. As I see it, we have the interpretation that individuals arrive at (or feel comfortable with) and that's fine. And we have the meaning of the song, from Justin, which is about the "A" word, but also is about commitment, or lack of it. I think it's one of their best. It's actually a CD discography rather than vinyl, but it's got the most obscure stuff on there. You can also try Magnus Thome's discography which has the cassettes and vinyl releases - http://www.public.se/magnus.t/del-amitri/ although I was having problems loading it this morning.
