The Verbatim Corporation, maker of compact discs, has introduced a new recordable CD called the Digital Vinyl CD-R, which on the label side looks and feels like a 45-r.p.m. record. It has a black vinyl-like surface, complete with grooves (exaggerated for effect), and a label area in the middle that will remind computer users of a certain age of an old Tamla Records single. About the only thing missing is the plastic insert that used to let the 45's fit on the spindle of a turntable made for LP's. Forty-fives were famous for their B sides, often a forgettable take of an even more forgettable song. Verbatim's B side is a standard 700-megabyte compact disc, suitable for recording anything digital - a digitized collection of B sides, perhaps? The discs are sold in single packs ($1.49) or multipacks ($12.99 for 10), with the inner label area available in five colors.
