So it shouldn't be a > surprise that many women think the male lead singers > of their favourite bands are sexy - but it doesn't > mean that that's why we chose them! > Here here Rebecca! And I also agree with Doug to a certain extent - though I'm not sure how much of what he wrote was serious or tongue in cheek. When I fell in love with Del Amitri I had no idea what they looked like. The photos on Waking Hours and Change Everything aren't brilliant - and I tend to put new CD's straight into the car - so don't really study the CD sleeves anyway. I certainly didn't fancy any of the band at the time (though my later crush on Iain is very well known and can't be denied :-)) !!) Admittedly, as a kid I had crushes on Paul McCartney, Davy Jones from the Monkees and David Cassidy, who were all undoubtedly "pretty boys" but one of my favourite bands was Slade - and who could fancy any of them? I loved the music and didn't care what they looked like. At 16 my musical tastes turned to ELP (OK so I DID have a very big crush on Keith Emerson) and then bands like Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd etc. I certainly didn't fancy them - but still went out and bought all their records. Then came Dire Straits - well Mark Knopfler could hardly be called handsome by any stretch of the imagination - but many women (myself included) find him extremely attractive. However, I fell in love with his music long before I ever met him and realised how attractive he could be. I loved the Police too - and I do love Sting's voice - but don't fancy him. Eric Clapton - a lot of women love the pants off him but it's his music which pushes my button. I'm fascinated by what makes him tick and how he's got through his drug and alcohol addiction, his love for Patti Harrison, the way he dealt with the death of his son etc... But that doesn't make me buy his albums. I just love the way he plays and the feeling he pours into his music. Bands like Coldplay, The Devlins, Travis, whilst undoubtedly they have band members which women will fancy they're not my type (though I find Dougie from Travis really cute in a strictly maternal way). In fact I only really noticed what Coldplay look like for the first time last night when there was a TV advert on. I think Rebecca's right in that women (not girls) tend to fancy the lead singer or guitarist in a band more because of the lyrics they write or their intelligence and the way they come over in interviews than their looks. But they usually only notice this because they love the music. (Hence my crush on Iain - which came several years after I first heard the band). And these crushes tend to be a bit of fun and harmless fantasy not to be taken seriously. Whereas younger girls often go for looks first and the music is inconsequential. The Gareth Gates phenomenonum (he was a runner-up in Pop Idol in the UK - but the winner is gay so "off limits") is huge in Britain. He turns out turgid covers of Elvis songs (Elvis would be spinning in his grave if he wasn't working at the local chippie) - and the nation of 11-14 year old girls turns out to buy it in their droves. They get quite hysterical over him and would sacrifice anything just to touch him or get near him. They don't really care that he's not the most intelligent person on this planet and that he doesn't write his own material. It's a very different thing from the crushes we have on Del members. But unfortunately, we don't buy singles on the basis of our crushes - so "our" bands don't get into the singles charts (unless you're John Otway - - No 9 !!! - and most of his audience generally consists of middle-aged bald men with big beer guts and "women of a certain age" - and we only got him in the charts through sheer doggedness - and buying up to 30 copies of the single each!). So whereas Doug has a point about girls with crushes - they shouldn't be confused with the more mature crushes we have *after* we get into the music. I buy music for the music - not because I fancy the person. These sweeping generalizations ARE good for discussion. Yours or my "SEX LIFE" has nothing to do with the discussion...but isn't that what discussion is all about? Opinionated generalizations - key word being opinion, generally. Phil (also known as rat) Subject: Re: OV: lesbian Del Fan I'm a Dels fan and I buy the music because it is damned brilliant... That other people that are gay, straight, black, white, green or whatever love it as well is immaterial. What is great is that we call all have our own opinions while collectively agreeing that there is something that all moves us in some way :) There ends the lesson ;) Take care, Michael:) --- Phil Denson wrote: > I'm a Del fan and I'm a straight white male. > I buy music for the music - not because I fancy the > person. > These sweeping generalizations ARE good for > discussion. > Yours or my "SEX LIFE" has nothing to do with the > discussion...but isn't > that what discussion is all about? If you were to look in her cd case, the only thing that might tip you off regarding her age is her Avril Lavigne cd. She's recently been listening to Wilco, and she's trying to persuade me to give her an advance on her allowance so she can buy a Beulah cd. (I hadn't even heard of them until she had me listen to some samples of their songs on cdnow.) Just had to let you know there are some intelligent teens out there who listen first w/o regard to the cute factor of a band.
