Obviously, living in Australia, you would know of him, but I don't know of anyone in the States who's heard of him. A friend of mine invited me to see Paul at Cafe Largo in LA a few years back (on his "Words & Music" tour) and I fell in love with his music. To anyone out there, see if you can pick up any of Paul's CD's (like Words & Music or Songs from the South or Nothing but a Dream). He's great!! David P.S. Go Angels!! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Oct 2002 10:10:50 -0400 From: "William Kates" Subject: OV: RE: What's in your CD player? I too, can't resist this thread: 1. Julia Fordham - Concrete Love. Longtime fans may argue, but I think this surpasses Porcelain as her best album ever - a masterpiece. 2. Garrison Starr - From Takeoff to Landing. Juliana Hatfield's country cousin. She's from Mississippi, but there's nothing country about the music. Well written songs, nice muscular guitar work by Garrison. 3. Del Amitri - Can You Do Me Good. I agree with those who say, it's not Twisted, but even second rate Del Amitri is still better than most of what else is out there. At least 50% of this album really clicks for me. 4. Mark Knopfler - Ragpicker's Dream. A solid effort from the guitarist's guitarist. 5. Santana w/Michele Branch - I haven't heard the Shaman disc yet, but this single sure hits most of the same appeal points as Smooth did. Who would've thought that lightning could strike twice. I can't get it out of my head. Cheers. - - William Kates ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Oct 2002 11:47:08 -0400 From: "Eric Johnson" Subject: OV: RE: What's in your CD player? Here's what I've had playing lately: Peter Gabriel - Up: definitely darker than his last couple albums, and lots of great, weird noises (backwards guitar, etc.) It reminds me more of his earilest solo albums. Going to see him in December, can't wait! David Baerwald - Here Comes The New Folk Underground: much improved (IMO) over Triage, which was just too angry/weird/paranoid for me. Del Amitri - Can You Do Me Good: I think this album gets better every time I listen to it. John Mayer - Room For Squares: nothing special, fun tunes, some good lyrics, overall enjoyable. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - The Last DJ: hmm, something makes me think that Tom is pissed off at the music biz. Not every song is about the music industry, good overall. David Gray - The EP's 92-94: hasn't made much of an impression on me yet. Found it used and got it since I am a completist, much to my wife's chagrin at times ("why do you have 3 CD singles for 'Roll to Me'?" "because they're all different, see, b-sides, live tracks, cool huh?") Son Volt - Wide Swing Tremolo: just found this used and only listened to a couple times, but like it so far. Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Once More With Feeling: a guilty pleasure. However, I prefer the version I downloaded months ago that has dialog from the show left in, I think it really adds something and was more fun. Neil Finn - Live at the St. James (tracks ripped from the DVD): a wonderful album, and the DVD has a bunch more songs than the CD version. Peter Gabriel: Up (you may remember me raving about this a couple of weeks ago), absolutely brilliant album after a 10 year absence. Porcupine Tree: In Absentia. These guys just get better and better, alyways progressing and exploring new ground, this puts them somewhere half way between Tool and Pink Floyd, with the classic Porcupine Tree stamp all over it. Rush: Caress of Steel (my fave band!). Probably the weirdest Rush album! Geddy Lee: My Favourite Headache. Beautiful solo album from the Rush mainman. My favourite vocalist of all time by far and also the greatest bassist to walk the earth :o) Dels fans wouldn't feel out of place listening to this record. For the downloaders try "Slipping" or "Still". Nada Surf: Let Go. Perfect pop/rock band. Neil Finn - One All and One Nil 6. Stacy Kent - In Your Eyes 7. Weezer - Pinkerton Yes, I have too much time on my hands. Take care, everyone! Oh, on a side note, I listed to Twisted by the missing Dels last weekend and rediscovered how much I love it. I really miss those guys! Heard them on the radio last week and almost ran off the road!
