I highly doubt this will ever become law, since there are WAY too many questions left in the air (the main one being, "How would they know what was downloaded illegally?"). This legislation also protects the companies from suing in retaliation, since it allows them to damage your computer up to something like $2500 worth before they would have to compensate you. The scary thing is that the RIAA got it introduced at all. On another note, Hilary Rosen (head of the RIAA, which for those who don't know is the record labels' lobbying organization) says that the labels shouldn't be expected to cut their costs to keep sales up. She feels that $20 CD's are still "a great value" in today's world. And of course it's piracy & downloading that are to blame for weak sales, not high prices and bad records. Sure Hil, whatever you say. I heard an interesting analogy. Illegally downloading music is like trying to pick the pocket of the artist, but the label stands in the way so you pick their pocket instead. The label finds their wallet is a little lighter, but the artist never knows what happened. Not that it matters because the artist's wallet was empty anyways, the label was "holding" their money for them. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 13:06:48 -0700 (PDT) From: doug brown Subject: Re: OV: OT RIAA Website disabled by attack >She feels that > $20 CD's are still "a great value" in today's world. > And of course it's > piracy & downloading that are to blame for weak > sales, not high prices and > bad records. Sure Hil, whatever you say. Haha I've been saying this for awhile too. They are killing themselves with extortion level CD and ticket prices. It was about $45 (after fees :P ) to see Rush ... from the lawn! Front row McCartney tickets for his current tour are $250!!! Ok I'm a convert. Paul, I will never pay another cent to hear a note from you. I'm going to download everyone of your songs for free with Kazaa - come and get me you sellout. No I'm not a freeloader. I downloaded a bunch of Eileen Rose mp3s, Leigh and I really liked them and we bought Long Shot Novena for $8 on Ebay. This is the way me and everyone else wants to do it and will do it. Wake the hell up all you industry bigshots. Yahoo!
