Del Amitri- CYDG (this is the only tape I've been listening to in my car almost since it was released) James- Pleased to meet you (still trying my hardest to get into this one, though I am losing my faith) Just a sidetrack though, has anyone heard of Kevin McDermott Orchestra? Is the singer related to an Ex drummer of the Del's Brian McDermott? Or is that a spooky coincidence, because they have supported the Del's (though with different names many times around that period of Brian's drumming. This may be a common known fact on this board, but not to me unfortunately. Justin always seems to go to KMO gigs - and often gets up and sings or otherwise heckles and Kevin sang backing at the Dels' Edinburgh Hogmanay gig. KMO also supported the Dels at their final Astoria concert of the 1998 tour. And they're (supposedly) not broken up anymore. They played a show for New Year's Eve in Tempe this year, and have been working on new material supposedly. Scott Johnson, one of the guitar players, quit the band he was in (Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, who formed after the Refreshments broke up) to rejoin the Blossoms. I haven't heard much lately about them though. By far, the best album I've got in the past 12 months. #2 Merseybeast - Ian McNabb. Someone else had him listed, though it was a newer album. This isn't brilliant, but it does grow on you. A lot. #3 Recovering the Satellites - Counting Crows. With the last listen, I think this just may have passed all Del Amitri albums on my "best of" list. #4 Midnight Vultures - Beck. This CD is derivitive of so many things, but it's also so much fun. #5 Nobody's Cool - Lotion. I think this is a New York band. I have a couple of their albums and they are pretty interesting. No idea whether they are still together, but I saw them open for Frank Black several years ago. I thought the records were better than the show. Chuck ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jul 2002 22:04:52 -0500 From: Leah Schenkenberg Subject: Re: OV: spinning 1. Can you do me good - del amitri 2. (in my car) billboard's top ten hits of 1983 - includes making love outta nothing at all and Total Eclipse of the Heart. This is the result of a midnight trip to Walmart, but I'm not regretting it yet. 3. Message in a Box: Police Boxed Set - Disc #1 I listened to "so lonely" 4 times in a row trying to get out of bed the other morning. 4. you get what you need: The first cd I ever burned, including The Ghostwriter theme song, Lenni's attempt at an Mtv video (or am I the only one young enough to remember 'you gotta believe'?), various 80s (jesse's girl, what do all the people know, invisible touch, etc) and a few artists I'll admit to willingly (tom petty, rolling stones, etc.) 5. Alien youth - skillet (Susan, I saw them Thursday at a music festival...did you know their new guitarist is only 17??) 6. Music for the morning after - Pete Yorn I am a groupie to the core, I never buy new music, but I heard enough good things about him here that I risked my $10 at best buy during christmas break. It's been well worth it. I'm usually more embarrassed than anything playing this game, but I feel like a poor sport otherwise. I've seen some very personal favourites of mine on your lists, and it makes my heart a-flutter. :) SO great to see people mention the new Paul Westerberg, which I agree is marvelous. Being a huge PW/The Replacements fan for some time, I think he's doing some of the best work of his career and it really shows. I finally get to see him for the first time on 15th August up in Chapel Hill, NC. I'm so excited. To whomever mentioned Toad the Wet Sprocket, yes, they're awesome. They were the first band I ever got into, thanks to their 1994 album, _Dulcinea._ That's a good one to start with. Or either _Pale_ or _Fear_. Any of their albums are great, but those are good ones to start with. Also, yays on Wilco. They're brilliant. And before I ramble on to death, someone was given the new John Mayer as a gift. I really dig John Mayer, but I also saw him live _twice_ before I ever got a hold of any of his recorded material. He's amazing live. Really funny, very talented and versatile. His new record, IMHO, stinks because of the production. It took songs that were so great and remarkable live and in previous, solo-acoustic recorded incarnations and strangled them with a lame studio-band and thin production. Still, he's really taking off here in the States and more power to him. I just hope he gets a better producer for the next album. josh.
