Obviously Mercury has no interest in them. Better for the band to be let go now then to be left hanging with no support for months or years. A friend of mine after hearing CYDMG? for the first time (he's a casual fan, not a nut like me) wondered aloud if the "new direction" may have been intended to scuttle their deal the whole time. Based on what I've read, the band has been hanging on by a thin thread ever since Polygram (which had bought A&M) was swallowed by Universal. If you wanted out, which would you do: make a record that pleases your fan base or would you decide to try something new? Neil Young (hero to the Dels) did something similar with a series of albums that were radical departures from the "Neil Young style" (notably Trans) just to piss off his label so they'd drop him. He wasn't saying the album was a throwaway, but that they may have done a "sonic 180" in the hopes of breaking free. BTW, Neil Young still stands by those albums artistically, he just didn't want to give the record company what they wanted or expected from him, since they hadn't given him what he expected or wanted. Anyways, that was his theory not mine, I just thought it would be interesting fodder for discussion. If they do get dropped, they should consider heading into the studio immediately to record a Groovy Tubes produced effort that they can quickly release on their own (through the websites, Amazon, etc.). "Everyone Knows It's You", "Waking Up", "Drowned On Dry Land" should be included. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 13:43:04 +1000 (EST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Michael?= Subject: Re: OV: Alarming news I know that Australian band Powderfinger are establishing a new label... might be a an opportunity there ;) Take care, Michael:) - --- SngWrite1@aol.com wrote: > I contend that this may be the best thing for them > at this point. I think this time we'll do a new recording. From the Barrowlands in Glasgow on May 20, 2002 The final show of the tour. This is a 2 disc set. Please bear this in mind. (Track Listing to follow) This is an audience recording. It is NOT soundboard or radio. I have graded the sound as a C+. I've heard better, and I've heard worse. But, it's the only one we've got. It's bloody Del Amitri live, what more do you want? If you're interested in obtaining a copy of this, email me at darren@bendcable.com indicating this. If you're interested in being a BRANCH for this show, and making copies for others, please email me at darren@bendcable.com indicating this. And, I'm sorry to say this, but just because you took part in the Glastonbury CD-r Tree, doesn't mean you're automatically signed up for any further CD-r Trees. YOU MUST SIGN UP EACH TIME! I'll put up a "sample" of the recording on the Opposite View Mailing List homepage. http://home.bendcable.com/oppositeview Then, click on CD-r Trees. Questions?? You can ALWAYS contact me at darren@bendcable.com Thanks, Darren ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V4 #171 **********************************
