We don't scream for more after the "encores" (bullshit, an encore is supposed to be improvised, not planned ahead), not even a little bit. We all act like "ok, show's over, I guess I've to go...reluctantly, but I QUIETLY go". If the whole crowd (or most of it at least) stayed around shouting for more, there's no band on earth, and no concert hall, that would ignore it. So, in the end, what we get is WHAT WE DESERVE, for being such go along whatevers the word doesn't come to my head. Feeling a bit guilty I didn't scream for more after the London show, am I? I didn't want to look like the crazy Spaniard that I am. Cris I'm afraid it's all down to "regulations" which the authorities increasingly impose in our own best interests.(or so they say). Hence the curfew imposed by the theatre to avoid getting fined for allowing shows to go on too late. Years ago, before concert going was "sanitized" by the authorities gigs used to go on until the early hours quite often, with bands playing for hours and with many encores. Coincidentally enough with today's sad news I've seen The Who play for well over three and a half hours, and they didn't come on stage until 10 PM because they were not happy with the sound and wanted to get it perfect. Today, the theatre has to be empty by 11.00 PM because large numbers of people spilling out into the street after that is deemed somehow to be "a problem". Volume levels are another thing that have been drastically reduced by the "do gooders". I quite often find that the music nowadays lacks the impact it should have at gigs simply because it isn't loud enough. Heard about this last night as I was leaving work. Apropos of nothing, I was fortunate enough to spend some time with The Who on the 1989 reunion tour and I remember having lunch next to Entwistle on a sunny Saturday and talking with him about golf and sailing... Just a silly little memory... To me this is especially sad as a fan, as I've been hearing for months about the new songs the band have been working on - whether they were planning to release them or not, the preliminary reports on them were really positive. Life's too fucking short and too fucking unpredictable... Cheers, Jen - ----Original Message Follows---- From: Lori Royal-Gordon To: oppositeview@smoe.org Subject: OV: Another Who member gone . . . They already played 2 encore sets ... show was over, lights went on and we were almost passing the exit. Suddenly the lead singer went back on stage asking something like: hey folks, where the heck are you? catching the last bus into town? Well, the venue refilled and we had another half hour of fun! Thats something! A band asking the audience for an encore ... However, I miss songs like Cringe or Waking up on the new album. What bothers me most is their effort to please an entire pop audience with a mix of songs like Belong Belong and dusty I-Love-You-Ballads. Having a finger in every pie is something you do for the money. They are better off following their own style and, in addition, hiding behind the evil music industry (the one that pays their wages), instead of taking initiative by themselves is annoying. I think, no record company can prohibit a band to perform and if the band doesnt like to play live, why are they still around anyway? Unfortunately: a) it was in Madison so like 30-40 people showed, and b) it was a 18+ (thus dry) show. During the part where the crowd'd normally scream, Keith walked back on stage and said, "Okay, the fact that this is a dry show is terrible enough; we won't act like rock stars and make you beg for us. We'll just do the encore and then we can all get drunk!" I was amused. :D PS: Keith stole my pen AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shame on me for adding the "h" in my haste. I'm still so bummed out, especially reading all the tributes and memories on various sites that people have posted, it sometimes seems like it takes the loss of someone for people to realize how much they meant. Pete Townshend's website just had a brief note from he and Roger that thanked people for their love and support, and that "The Ox has left the building - we have lost another friend." Also, Billboard Editor in Chief Timothy White passed away yesterday (also apparently of a heart attack). He wrote a lot of really good stuff about music that he loved. He also wrote a great book on Bob Marley called Catch A Fire. A very sad day for the music world.
