Yeah they're slackers and always have been. Just like anyone they want more money without having to work for it. :) I agree though that the next logical step if they want to keep going is to hit the road. Once again they're shooting themselves in the foot by not touring this summer. It's the time of year when live bands make most of their money and get most of their fans which means more album sales. I understand they are reluctant to tour the US with no label but plenty of bands like Wilco keep showing that it can be done. And did I say bad management making bad decisions, crappy singles and videos? ;) Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2002 19:51:49 +0100 From: "Johnson, Tony D" Subject: OV: RE: oppositeview-digest V4 #153 Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2002 08:28:00 -0500 From: "Ed Minton" Subject: Re: OV: What's next? >As for touring - well it's generally a loss making exercise to be frank, and >is funded by the record company against future sales. I believe that this is a common misconception. Now, I will not pretend to know definitively what I'm talking about here, as I suspect that only a band's accountant will know for sure, but, I can tell you that I recently read comments about this subject that I found to be extraordinary. It's not a misconception - plenty of bands claim that touring actually costs them money. And Justin himself said that this last tour was costing the band about 20 grand. The occasion has become a platform for crass commercialism and political propaganda. I'm not saying that the commemoration of the victims of the World Trade Center tragedy was a bad thing to do, but I think that most of us know that all the flag waving has been a convenient distraction for our government to hide behind. This past Super Bowl was part of that. U2 is a fine band, and Bono's political motivations are pure, I believe. However, as I mentioned before, I don't thing that "making it big" in the U.S. usually has much to do with great artistry. Ah well! It all depends on how we each define success, I suppose. Justin's is very Ambitious in he's own right and I'm sure would love the Recognition of bands like U2. Why would you not? So - how are chances to get these concerts via a more legal way - how about the cd tree Darren mentioned some time ago? back to lurking Eva ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V4 #154 **********************************
