We (Taire and Lori) arrived from Southern California last Wednesday and brought the sunshine with us. It was a hot day. (At least the English thought so--to us, it seemed a typical winter afternoon. ) Despite a mind-numbing lack of sleep, we were all geared up for five nights of pure Del indulgence. Here, for anyone who might be interested, is our report of those five concerts. (Disclaimer: We wrote this on the 12-hour flight from Glasgow back to Los Angeles, under the influence of coffee heavily spiked with Bailey's Irish Cream. If we mixed up our memories, we cannot be held responsible!) *** Thursday, May 16: Southampton The concert: The setlist (Taire snagged one) reads like this: Last To Know When I Want You Buttons Just Like A Man She's Passing This Way Be My Downfall Not Where It's At Thru All That Nothing Jesus Saves Cash And Prizes Jimmy Blue Stone Cold Sober Drunk In A Band Here And Now - -------------- Just Before You Leave Driving Kiss This Thing Just Getting By We were told this has been the "normal" setlist for the tour, and although we'd heard complaints on OV about sameness, this was our first night and we thought it was a wonderful mix of songs! The new songs sounded terrific live. It was a standing venue and a good, rockin' show, very tight musically. The band all seemed thrilled to be there (though we bet not as thrilled as we were!), and Justin thanked the audience often, which was very nice and heartwarming. He talked about football (soccer), and when a beach ball landed on the stage, he kicked it back into the audience. Naturally, the ball came back several more times after that! Justin announced the birth of Mark's daughter, Maddy. (Or Maddie? He didn't give the spelling.) During the encore set, several women tossed their bras up on the stage, which the band found quite amusing. Justin laughed so hard he missed a whole verse of Kiss This Thing Goodbye. Then two exceptionally drunk women pushed up front and pulled up their shirts, dancing quite suggestively and prompting more laughter. One of them then proceeded to pull down her pants, too, which had Kris waving "no, no, no!" Justin thanked the two girls as he left the stage, although we suspect he was thanking them more for the entertainment value than the quality of their display . . . As an aside, we would like to suggest that, in the future, if any women plan on throwing their bras on stage, they wear something much prettier. The ones thrown were of the grandmotherly Playtex variety--not reflecting well on Dels fans, girls! Foreign fans we met (non-US/UK): We arrived in the middle of Sandro's TV interview before the gig--good job, Sandro! It was great meeting you! The fashion report: Justin wore blue jeans for all five of the shows we saw, this night with a black button-down shirt. Iain wore a similar dark shirt as well. They both wore silver link chain necklaces. The highlight of the evening was Kris's bright red Doc Martens boots, which inspired one OV-er to dash off to the nearest Doc outlet the next day in order to purchase a matching pair for herself. Although we were along for the trip, we refrained from buying any (red boots, that is--we won't discuss the other 18 pairs of Docs we bought between us!). *** Friday, May 17: London (Shepherd's Bush) The concert: This was even better than Southampton! Another standing venue and a sold-out show. The energy level was higher here, both for the band and the fans--many more people sang along, even with the non-sing-along type songs (unfortunately, this singing was often done at the tops of their lungs, in our ears, drowning out the band . . . sigh). The band seemed really pleased with the audience's reception, and again Justin thanked the audience many times. When they came back out for the encore, they brought along four women to play strings, which was a wonderful surprise. One of the women sang along to all the songs and looked especially thrilled to be there. Andy played accordion, which prompted many cheers from the audience and big smiles from him. We didn't get a setlist this time, but one surprise addition was Nothing Ever Happens (the entire audience sang along with this one!), and they also played In The Frame. Justin messed up and started mid-song, but nobody cared at all . . . a wonderful, memorable night. Foreign fans: We really enjoyed meeting OV-er Cristina Gonzalez Ruiz from Spain! Lori was especially happy to learn that Cris is an architect, since she's been looking for someone whose brain she can pick for her upcoming book that features an architect as the hero. (Cris, you will be hearing from me. ) The fashion report: Most all the band wore suit jackets tonight--very snazzy! *** Saturday, May 18: London again The concert: Another sold out show. Beforehand, Justin was spotted out front taking pictures of the marquee. For the third night in a row, we stood dead center front row, and we were beginning to suspect the band might be tired of seeing our faces there. Or maybe they were laughing at us instead? Here's the setlist as it was typed (Lori grabbed this one): Last To Know When I Want You Buttons Just Like A Man She's Passing This Way Be My Downfall Not Where It's At Thru All That Nothing Being Somebody Else Cash And Prizes Jimmy Blue Stone Cold Sober Drunk In A Band Here And Now - -------------- Tell Her This Just Before You Leave In The Frame Driving Kiss This Thing Just Getting By Better even than Friday night! We had the string section again (including the enthusiastic fan/violinist), and the accordion, and it was nice to hear Being Somebody Else instead of Jesus Saves (not that we don't like Jesus Saves--but variation is always welcome!). One amusing thing that happened during this show was the audience clapped along but got out of time with Mark, and he put his hands over his ears and made funny faces. At one point, someone shouted out that Justin was a has-been, and he shouted back that they were still here (or something like that). The extended encore list was a special treat. Tell Her This was lovely, and there were no mistakes this time on In The Frame--a perfect, beautiful rendition. This show started earlier than the others, because the venue had planned a "club night" for after the show and wanted the band out by ten o'clock. Because of that, it seemed a little rushed, and they talked and joked around less than usual, but the extra songs more than made up for that! Musically, we feel this was the best show of the five. The band was really "on" this night! Foreign fans: We met two very nice Dutch girls, Denise and Anke, who said they would post on the delamitri.com bulletin board, so watch for them there! The fashion report: Except for Mark, everyone wore suits with ties. They looked great but very hot--Justin kept tugging on his tie to try to give himself some air! *** Sunday, May 19: Croydon The concert: This was a seated venue and our assigned seats weren't very good, but we just "happened" to be standing in the front when the concert started, and when everyone rushed down, well darn, we found ourselves stuck there for the fourth night in a row. Taire grabbed the setlist: Last To Know When I Want You Buttons Just Like A Man She's Passing This Way Be My Downfall Not Where It's At Thru All That Nothing Being Somebody Else Cash and Prizes Jimmy Blue Stone Cold Sober Drunk In A Band Here And Now - ------------------ Before (Just Before You Leave) Driving Kiss This Thing Just Getting By As you can see, this was a shorter set with seemingly no surprises, although it became evident that Being Somebody Else had now permanently replaced Jesus Saves. It was a seated venue, but the band asked everyone to stand . . . we guess about half the people did. Definitely the most "civilized" audience. (We'll leave it up to you to decide whether that's good or bad!) And there was a surprise, after all--at the end of the concert, they left off Just Getting By and instead announced Iain's birthday, then played a rocking version of John Fogerty's Rockin' All Over The World (which has also been covered by Status Quo). They provided party streamers and balloons, and Jane had brought along a long, silver "Happy 40th Birthday" banner that Kris helped us stretch across the front row. Buddy took over playing Iain's guitar and did a great job of it! Iain wandered aimlessly around the stage, joining in to sing a few words here and there, but mainly sipping from a bottle of water and looking embarrassed. When it was over, Justin gave him a kiss. It was all very festive and fun--a great way to end a great show! The fashion report: Kris wore a blue suit with an orange shirt. No suit jacket for Justin today. Iain wore a shiny gold patterned shirt, very birthday-ish. ** Monday, May 20: Glasgow The concert: The shows kept getting better and better, but they saved the best for last. We heard there were 60 tickets left when the doors opened, but there was a long line for them, so we're assuming it sold out. This was the only show with serious security--metal detectors and physical searches. It was crowded. It was hot, Hot, HOT! The barrier here was padded, which gave us a clue as to how the show would be . . . rough but fun. It certainly lived up to our expectations! We didn't get a setlist since the security guards grabbed them and gave them to their friends, but one highlight of this show was a wonderful version of This Side of the Morning. Especially for this one song, the band brought along the London violinist who was also a fan, and she was totally thrilled to be there. Lots of interaction between her and Justin. We got accordion again, and Andy even played guitar on one song! Nothing Ever Happens was another big sing-along. The concert was wild, a lot of dancing and pushing and shoving, but hey, by the end of it we felt like we'd made a couple thousand new close, personal friends. There were a few funnies. Signs all over the place that said, "DEL AMITRI -- No Hats Allowed." Huh? On stage there was a big foam hand that said "WOT?" with a finger pointing up toward a photo of the Royal family. A girl in the audience shouted out for Spit In The Rain, and it was raining outside, so Justin spit into the air and said there, that was spit in the rain. Another fan asked when Justin was coming back. He ran off the stage and then reappeared, shouting, "I'm back!" He also said something along the lines of "This is a really nice city--I think I could live here." Ha ha. After the encore set, the stage remained dark. The band left but then came back, and the stage still remained dark. They ended with a cover of the Sex Pistols' God Save The Queen, with Kris on vocals since Justin was now shirtless and holding a small flashlight ("torch" to you UK types ) in his mouth to light his guitar. Yes, we were in our regular front-and-center spot and had a great view even considering the darkness, but no, we are not going to describe Justin without a shirt . . . you are going to have to rely on your imagination! It was a wild, crazy end to a wild, crazy show, and we were so sad to realize our Dels adventure was over. But five nights in a row had been a dream come true. As the band left the stage for the final time, Justin said they would be back at Christmas. Alas, the trip from California is a long and expensive one, so we don't expect to be there. However, we are buying lottery tickets in the hopes of making it. Foreign fans: Birgit was there from Germany--so nice to meet you! The fashion report: Did we mention it was HOT? Justin was wearing a suit jacket but took it off after two songs, to much teenage-like screaming from Glaswegian women. By ten minutes into the show, the entire band was pouring (not dripping) sweat. Their clothes looked like somebody had pushed them into a swimming pool. Sweat puddled on the stage and streamed down their guitars. Every shake of the head sent sweat flying. However, for Barrowland, this all seemed very fitting. *** And so ends our Dels odyssey and this very long report (has anyone actually read all the way down to here?). Overall, we have decided that, far from fading away, the band is getting better and better with age. Much as we loved seeing them ten years ago (or 16 years ago in Taire's case!), they do a better live show now, and it's been wonderful to watch them grow artistically over the years. We're both looking forward to even better things in the future! In closing, we'd like to say thank you to Jane & Eddie and Andrew & Libby for treating us to a lovely dinner out that first jetlagged evening before all the madness really started, and to Hilary and Libby for driving us to the Doc Martens outlets so we could buy all those shoes and set a new record for overweight luggage. And most of all, our heartfelt thanks goes to Jane, who made our hotel reservations, bought our concert tickets, and ignored her poor family in order to drive us all over Britain, stopping at countless places for Lori to do research and Taire to go shopping. We couldn't have done it without you, and it was so much fun!!
