Is there ANY chance whatsoever that the whole recordings of some of these shows may surface? I don't like being teased with live recordings I can't get my hands on };o) I'd pay from the website, maybe it could be a new Delfan section. I know a lot of bands have a subscription to live shows, you pay a certain amount a year/month and you get posted bootlegs, etc. P.S I'd sell my soul for any carnation of the last Oxford Show from this tour. Can anyone help? I'm going to have to abandon any attempts to be objective! I've always said that the best gigs are those where the artist is having a good time, and so is the crowd and you get a great feedback going on which makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. Manchester was one of those nights. I don't know where they found the crowd, perhaps they all shipped down from Glasgow, but I don't think I've ever witnessed a crowd so up for it. (Bearing in mind I've not been to the Barrowlands. Yet.) If only all crowds were as good as this. The crowd were screaming and cheering as the lights went down and the intro started, the band came on laughing, Justin having difficulty singing the first line to ATLTK. Each song got better and better as the night went on, I can't pick out any one song as a highlight. The band were very tight and sound was superb, I could hear every note of every instrument. Justin's voice was so wonderful all night, it seems a bit churlish to complain about him wimping out on the long high note of Here and Now. :-) A bit of a hiccup in JBYL where Justin appeared to sing the wrong line, a couple of other minor technical hitches too, but they didn't matter at all, all part of the show. Perhaps a couple of tricky gremlins still evading Buddy and that shovel. A couple of people around me were shouting for Spit In The Rain in the encore. Justin said at first that they didn't have the right tuning, but after a moment's pause he delivered the first couple of lines, to a great cheer. "If you want to hear it so much then f***ing sing it yourself" was his comment - if he'd provided the chords the crowd would have done just that. Justin needs to be brave during Be My Downfall one night and let the audience carry the song for a while. Someone did say that perhaps he's worried we'd all play a joke on him and fall silent. Yeah, right, as if! I brought my brother along, he agreed it was loads better than the Apollo gig during the last tour. Being strictly a Hatful of Rain guy, I asked him what he thought of the new material, and for him the stand out song was Drunk In A Band. His mobile phone rang just before the Dels came on stage, when he told his mate where he was, his mate berated him for not taking him with us as he loves Del Amitri but didn't know they were touring or had new material out. The publicity doesn't seem to have quite hit all the spots just yet. I bet Drunk In A Band as the next single would do the trick, although I think Buttons would make a great single too. I didn't take very many photos as I was far too busy having a wonderful time. And you know when you've been to a great show when at the end of the gig you don't scream at the crew for guitar picks or set lists, but beg in a croaky voice for bottles of water to rehydrate. Roll on Southampton. Hilary PS I've twigged that the white cloths over the monitors are to show up the swirly lighting effects. Doh! I can be a bit thick and slow to catch on sometimes! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 15:51:05 +0100 (BST) From: Hilary Gray Subject: OV: Re: (no subject) - Spoilers! Justin's appearance--guys can skip! 2. a couple of general comments 3. comments about the Manchester gig--no set list, but I will mention specific songs So here goes! 1. Justin seems to have used his day off between Glasgow and Manchester to get a haircut. He looked much neater at the Academy. And with the clothes he wears, well, he's looking rather mod, baby. 2. I think they were much more relaxed in Manchester than in Glasgow, which led to a few goofs and interesting moments, which I'll tell about in section 3 below. And once again, I think they were completely overwhelmed by the voracity of our enthusiasm. More people here seemed to be singing with more of the brand new tunes. I didn't find anybody from the list until afterwards, when by chance I happened upon Theresa from Seattle and her friend. Theresa, it was fun to meet you and thanks to Kay again for the ride back to my hotel! ************************ 3. ***HALF SPOILER*** There were some fun moments. (And I apologize if I connect any of these with the wrong songs--this is from memory two days later.) Andy had a false start on "Buttons on my Clothes" (or was it the rest of the band?). He did that first little keyboard tinkle and nobody else joined in, so he stopped, and then they all got it together the second time. At one point, Justin had the acoustic guitar and faked us out with a few bars of "spit in the rain." Everybody cheered wildly of course, but then he stopped. It was either before "be my downfall" in the middle or "Just Getting By" at the end. In "Be my Downfall" with Justin on acoustic: toward the end of the song, where's there's that little retard, Justin got crazy, doing a longer pause than normal and throwing in some extra little improvisation. Mark especially was looking on anxiously, but Justin gave him good body language and he started up again the right way, and the song proceeded smoothly. At the end, Justin smirked at Mark and Iain. Finally, in the encore during "Just Before You Leave", with Iain on electric, Justin on acoustic, and Cris on bass: About two-thirds of the way through the song, something started buzzing quite loudly, and the next thing we knew, there was no sound coming from Cris' bass. So without missing a beat, so to speak, Iain picked up the bass line on his guitar for a few bars until the bass resuscitated itself. *********END SPOILER*************** I'm looking very forward to meeting everyone in London. Jane emailed me with a list of all the Americans who will be there. Phenominal! I'd better go. I've been using the hotel's computer for an hour now... Kelly Minneapolis, headed toward London in a while. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 16:06:16 EDT From: SngWrite1@aol.com Subject: OV: Justin's Top 10 song? Remember the hints in the band bio that there will be a big hit song with a Justin Currie writing credit soon? Well my internet searching revealed the performer of said song (and co-writer?) was most likely Ronan Keating, but I still can't find the bloody songwriting credits for his new album. I know his new single (a #1) was written and originally performed by Garth Brooks. And I know that Gregg Alexander (formerly of New Radicals... you know... "You Get What You Give") has co-written some other stuff. But what about JC? Anyone hear anything?
