Hi all from a warm Australia... Well, I've had the new Dels CD for a week now - time enough to write up a small review. I guess the first thing is - Do all of you still wear the same clothes you wore 7 years ago?? Do you still all have the same job you had back then??? Yes, while this is a different 'sound' for Del Amitri - I admire the change. They need to keep themselves interested in their 'jobs'. Why would they simply churn out the same old stuff ??? Yes, there's plenty of people who want that - but the Dels are still the Dels. Del Amitri are musicians who use their creativity to express themselves; much the same way any person expresses their own talents; be it carpentary or even programming or cooking. Other bands I like have also done a similar change at some point in their careers; and it's always the artist wanting to express themselves, that's it. I mean do you really expect Justin to be content to keep sitting happy with his accoustic rattling out 'Nothing Ever Happens' type songs?? Don't you get bored if you're having to do the same thing in your job everyday? I know I get bored. Del Amitri are just lucky enough to be in a business where they can change the things they do without a hassle from a boss or whatever. A band that can show diversity will always be around; compared to bands that churn out the same old sound. Even Mark Knoplfer of Dire Straits who were very 'samey' for so long - changed his sound recently. Queen also took a diversion to funk/soul/disco at one stage. These comparisons aren't really relevant I know - but still worth pointing out that it's not as gloomy as it appears to be on this list. Personally the album is filled with great moments, and while it isn't Twisted, I wouldn't want it to be Twisted either. I'm glad they are continually challenging themselves to try new sounds. The harmonies are still there, and the melodies too. I do like Buttons on My Clothes and Drunk in A Band is a very cool drving song!. I like the album as a whole but feel Jesus Saves could have been a bside swapped with I'm A Unbeliever and Wash Her away with You Love Me. The album isn't as weak as I thought it would be reading all the reviews on OV. I hope the tour goes well; I will try and make sure the Southampton gig is unreal as I'll be bouncing my way along the front row for sure!! :) :) I hope the whole album and tour 'machine' that gets rolling inspires Justin, Iain and the boys to keep plugging away at their day jobs for at least a few more albums. Anyway - hope to see a few of you in Southampton in a couple of weeks! :) Cheers from down under, Sandro ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2002 10:24:10 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael Mitchell Subject: Re: OV: Realistic Album Review.. I'm certainly no opponent of changing everything (always loved the irony of that title...) but I wonder how much their new sound reflects some change in vision, or even their taste. Just a vibe I get from Justin's behaviour and comments around the album, and from hearing what Kris and Iain have done with Eileen Rose (which is awesome). don't get me wrong, I really like the new disc -- as I've strongly stated in this forum -- but when I listen again to KTTG and hear that great, fresh, distinctive sound, I wonder how good this album would have been approached more organically. I think it's the material I like so much on CYDMG (esp. Wash her away, which curiously people seem to absolutely love or absolutely hate), and that it works despite not because of the production values. I'd hate to think it, but maybe this was some last cheap shot a dream, and that they went with flavor of the month producers to tap some market niche. So even though I already got my CD I thought I'd check it out. Though the new album is listed at the top of the screen at $27.89 - scroll down until you get to the "import albums" section - where it is listed at $12.74 - not bad at all! They also have the singles, also confusingly listed at two different prices. It's in german, but I tried to translate it, so here's what it says: "Del Amitri, the glaswegian football-freaks, are presenting their new album "Can you do me good?" after an abstinence of two years. Their sixth studio album surprises with new and fresh sounds and magical rhythms. The first single "Just before you leave" swings until the sun shines!" Well, I don't think that's a bad beginning for a newsletter as big as MP3.com's one! It will reach many people, I guess.... :-) Dirk ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2002 23:43:20 -0400 From: "the Gardners" Subject: OV: Re: Realistic Album Review.. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alessandro Campobassi" To: Sent: Friday, April 26, 2002 8:17 AM Subject: OV: Realistic Album Review.. > I like the album as a whole but feel Jesus Saves could have been a > b-side swapped with I'm A Unbeliever... Honestly I can't stand either of these songs because they reveal an astonishingly narrow-minded, distorted and warped view of what both God and Jesus Christ actually are or do. Sure everyone is entitled to believe - or disbelieve - what they choose, but here someone has angrily demeaned a basic idea multitudes have found to be true, with no new insight or alternative suggestion even being offered... I mean seriously, isn't this girl who rushes to be his salvation in 'I'm An Unbeliever' the same one who sent greetings from Liverpool or doesn't want him because he's not where its at?
