Buttons on my > clothes wasn't it? Tina, are you visible in the audience? > I so agree with you Hilary. It was so exciting! For me it was very much down to the fact that we've seen Iain, Kris and Mark a few times recently without the rest of the band - and it was wonderful to see them all reunited after all this time. It sent shivers down my spine. I was down in Brighton watching an 80's revival gig (Spandau, Haward Jones, Toyah, China Crisis, Go West etc) - and we dashed home up to motorway to get there just in time for the Stereophonics last number so I was able to rewind the vid and watch it straight away. I was bouncing up and down on the sofa! Both songs came over well live - but I thought they all seemed very tense and nervous - or was that just my imagination? Justin only hit one bum note though - which is actually pretty good for him. At least tonight's performance augered very well for the tour. (You can skip this bit Andrew Douglas!!!) I thought Iain looked a bit rough though - he's been looking immaculate for the Eileen Rose gigs but his hair was very greasy and he was unshaven. Maybe he's trying to get back his rock'n'roll image in time for the tour. Justin at least had washed his hair though not combed it - it looked like he'd just got out of bed. Not a pair of leather trousers in sight thoughAndy has become a skinhead! And after his hair looked so nice in the publicity pics - he's shaved it all off! > I'll have to calm down otherwise I'll never get to sleep tonight! I woke up this morning with a huge grin on my face. 12 days to go and counting....... Hey, as long as Doug keeps sending those Kylie sites, you can letch over the boys as much as you like!;) Have you seen her underwear ad, Doug? It's VERY impressive! andrew ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Apr 2002 08:07:52 EDT From: MinervAthene@aol.com Subject: Re: OV: Re: Later.... I thought they seemed nervous, too, Jane - I'm sure that when the camera had a close up of Justin's hand at the start of Buttons he was actually trembling. I suppose they have been out of the loop for a while. Every song seems so 'thought about' - the lyrics are the best I've ever heard, the guitars, the melodies and of course the voice. The dels seemed a great package and soon became my fave band. Since then I've been awaiting their new album and I must admit, I'm disappointed. My sister keeps telling me "of course it won't be as good as 'the best of...' simply because it WAS their BEST OF". In comparision its as though YCDMG has been thown together without much thought - the melodies and lyrics are nowhere near as impressive. I'm hoping it will grow on me, but thats the point - I didn't need their best of to grow on me....it was fanatastic and I liked every single song. With this one, I find myself waiting for the next one or skipping tracks....what would i know but to me its not what i thought Del Amitri was.....PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME!!! I havn't any previous alums (apart from the best of) so where can I find the sound I found on the greatest hits? I realise YCDMG is a different sound - electronic effects on the voice and stuff. Every now and then I get a glimpse of my favourites from 'the best of' but not often enough. In more detail, I my favourite is "One last cheap shot at the dream" although its nothing like my favs on "the best of' so I don't know why I like it!!.....I think "the best of" is a feel good album - strange I know as the dels lyrics are infamously depressing but in terms of the melody and guitars its great to drive with. There was a great mix in the best of - upbeat and slow songs which I loved equally. On the new album, the upbeat are too upbeat and the slow are too slow. I also like "Just before you leave", "Buttons on my clothes" and "Just getting by" but I think a bit of alterations could make them fantastic. "Cash and Prizes" and "Out falls the past" and "She's passing this way" are OK but I wouldn't be playing them over and over and most other bands could pull them off. The others I can take or leave but the thing that really disappoints me is I really don't like "One more last hurrah" or "Wash her away" - I don't like the sound at all, they're not easy on the ear/sing along which I love about Del. "Drunk in a band" (bit of a laff) and "Jesus saves" are also liable to be skipped. I think the disappointment is some of the songs don't go anywhere and the melodies are repetitive and sometimes too negative and 'minor'. I suppose I didn't expect to only want to play one song again initially and also, having introduced the Dels to some people this album has left me slightly embarassed. Some nice ideas but nothing there that makes Del Amitri the brilliant band I know they are. P/S would you advise me to get their older albums so I don't keep playing "the best of" over and over....if so, which ones? If its any help my faves on that are "Cry to be found" "Here and now "Spit in the rain".......oh all of them really haha.......it used to be "here and now" but all the others have grown on me up to that standard so....I'll shut up now.... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Apr 2002 19:48:02 +0200 From: Birgit Wurm Subject: Re: OV: Re: oppositeview-digest V4 #102 If this was about rejecting people with different opinions, the whole thing would have blown to pieces during the last weeks (or long before that). My fav album still is Change Everything, as it was the one I came in on. There just is something special about the first one and you hear it over and over just to get a feeling for the whole band. I guess that's hard to repeat no matter what follows. Maybe to soften the blow from a best of compilation to a regular album you could try the collection of b-sides "Louse with Love". Anyway, if you've read the reviews for the new CD just expect to get as many differing answers to your request!
