Now they finally got them on stock (YES!), however, since the album won't be released here before next monday... And that's the good news. As far as I can tell most German music shops just skipped the single completely and I still have serious doubts about the album. The best I found was a "soon-to-be-in-stores"-mention in some mags, the worst said new album to be released in the second quarter with title t.b.a.! If I wasn't a fan I would say it was dreary dross. I would never buy it or listen to it if it was any other artist. I certainly won't recommend it to anybody. It's weak, a couple of stand out moments but only a couple. Mostly it's dull, it's uninspiring, it sounds and feels very tired and like it is going through the motions. Maybe 4 years to write this material wasn't long enough. Funny thing is, a couple of the songs seem like they were written in 4 minutes. Where has the passion, the energy, the emotions all gone? These are the qualities I always liked but you'll be hard pressed to find them. This is stodge and mostly unpalatable stodge. Likewise, the lyrics are not a patch on previous efforts. I guess there's only so many ways you can write about angst and the older you get, the harder it is for almost 40 year old men to have that same bitterness and edge. The problem with Del Amitri is that it's hard to judge the album on its own merits, you will always compare them on what we've experienced before. And this falls far short as far as I'm concerned anyway. No real Dels fan, other than the deaf, are going to place it anywhere but bottom or near the bottom of most hated Dels albums. It won't gain them new fans, it will decrease the existing fanbase. Usual professional sounds but very little to commend about it. I have listened 4 times and just can't get into it at all. Inoffensive is about the best I can personally say about it. I hoped against hope that I'm An Unbeliever showed there was still life in them unlike the very average fare that is Just Before You Leave. But it wasn't to be. Last cheap shot at the dream? It certainly was. Del Amitri R.I.P. Still, I look forward to the gigs so we at least get to see what they were about. They still have a great set of songs to perform live and we'll always have those memories. Make the most of it, I doubt we'll get to see them even play in medium sized venues again. They have peaked and are well on the downward slide. But let's be fair, they've lasted longer in years and albums than most groups of their stature. For those who say their are problems getting the album, go to Asda. My local had plenty in stock, they had it at no 24 in their chart. A good price too, #10.87. Mind you, you may as well wait - it'll soon be in the bargain bin. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2002 06:18:04 EDT From: NIGELBLUES@aol.com Subject: OV: Re: oppositeview-digest V4 #92 Back England says Currie Del Amitri lead singer Justin Currie admitted yesterday he is going to support England in the World Cup - and called on his fellow countrymen to get behind the Auld Enemy. I'm living in germany, in a city called Augsburg (that's near Munich). Five (!!!) record shops out of 5 tell me that there is no new single by our boys. And 4 of them keep telling me that there's no new album either, no matter what I tell them. I said that I KNOW that there's a new album called "Can you do me good", all that they answer is: "Maybe the website you visited is wrong?" But at least there's one record shop which knows that there is a new album, although they don't know a release date. I told them it has been released ALREADY. But they kept denying it... :-( Dirk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2002 11:58:07 +0100 From: Helen Pickering Subject: OV: RE: oh dear oh dear oh dear Doom - does this mean I'm not a true dels fan then - because I'm certainly not deaf! I love it, I think it's better than SOSP. True, it is different to their other stuff, the guitars have less weight overall, and you can hear Mark and Andy far more than in previous albums (which is no bad thing), but at the end of the day, I'd rather have had this than another rehash of SOSP. (And how many people on this list have said they'd pay just to hear Justin sing a telephone directory? This is much more fun that that, which is just as well since my office has been forced to listen to it since I got my copy!) They were playing acoustic versions at Glasgow on Monday - JBYL, Cash and Prizes & She's Passing This Way, plus Tell her This, Last to Know and Be my Downfall, and I'd say the new ones held their own, which is impressive enough since they were new to most of the audience. BTW, for all OV-er's - I've over the past few months held various conversations with my IP attorney, major label distributors ("rack-jobbers") and the Dels' former (?) agency, Progressive Global (out of Nashville... ), etc. regarding the potential for a buy-out for the North American rights for the latest Dels' release. (For anyone interested, I will provide them with the preliminary "business plan" I wrote and presented for review to these people.) In effect (I'm disappointed to admit) the consesus was that, due to long-term existing management contracts with the principals, and without strong and effective leadership within management, such a plan would prove futile - unless (again) the band initiated it themselves. The consensus was that it (without the above concilations) would prove way too expensive (legal fees comprising the majority of the costs). When then you factor into play Mercury's 'brilliant' execution of the UK release...Please, someone, give me (us) a glimmer of hope in this. I'm sorry - there ARE people in the US in 'the biz' who are eager to bring the guys out - but no-one's talked to them... Comments? I think there is no such place and it may just be the nickname of the cottage or their family's "joke" about Northern Wisconsin being "Iceland." It certainly could pass for Iceland some years! Anyway, I can tell ya . . Steve has this "atlas" for fishermen, called a Wisconsin Atlas & Gazeteer (so they can drive around and find that somewhere between this patch of scrub and that dead tree stump there might be a great place to catch trout!) It even comes with a magnifier! I swear every nook, cranny and shrub in Wisconsin is in this thing and there is no Reykjavik or anything remotely similar. Also, if you are in the Madison area, WMMM (105.5) is a station you will hear Dels and other music that is otherwise not played in Wisconsin. I have to drive west over the Dodge County line in order to get it in my car.
