The other thing of course is that at 6pm tomorrow I will be able to see the boys in Virgin.....It's been almost 4 years since I've seen them all together(the last time being at the Tartan Tent where I almost got run down by the band minibus)...other that at King Tuts and in my shop.....so I really can't wait! I will let you all know how it goes! On the CD-Wow thing....I have used them for quite a while...they are superb, but the only drawback is it takes usually about a week for your cds to arrive, so if you're not in a big hurry then they are great! They also don't have a back catalogue anything like amazon etc ...in fact im really surprised they have the new Dels album so soon they usually lag behind a bit....but yep...cds #8.99 delvered to your door who can argue with that!? You don't think anything can happen to change the dates at this stage do you???!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Apr 2002 09:25:33 EDT From: NIGELBLUES@aol.com Subject: OV: Re: oppositeview-digest V4 #89 Jeez, that is a piss poor awful poor review. Well Joe, even in their heyday they didn't always make Top 30. According to the Guinness Book of Hit Singles, Kiss This Thing Goodbye originally hit No 59 and the re-issue reached 43. Jimmy Blue only got to No 36. Be My Downfall was No 30 and Tell Her This No 32. Some Other Sucker's Parade had a lot more airplay and followed hot on the heels of Not Where It's At (No 21) but still only got to No 46 and the much loved Cry To Be Found beat it to number 40. The highest charting song was obviously Nothing Ever Happens which reached No 11. Always The Last To Know (13), DWTBO (18), DCHTS (15) and When You Were Young (20) were their only other Top 20 songs. Even Roll To Me, which although it was a Top 10 hit in the States, only reached No 22 in the UK charts. Spit In The Rain and Here and Now both went to No 21 and Just Like A Man to No 25. Bear in mind that they were getting a lot more airplay then, and the largest sector of record buying public, ie the under 25's, actually knew who they were back then. So after 4 years absence, appalling distribution problems and lack of airplay, I think number 37 is very good indeed. It may have been higher if only we could get hold of all the copies we wanted! Right - time to take my anorak off. And, yesterday, I read the Independent interview (thanks, Jane, for the link). How depressing. With news of artists all over the world getting ditched by their record companies for "only" selling 2 million copies, etc, the news that the Dels have to reach at least 300,000 copies is definitely something to be somber about. And I believe Justin (for probably the first and the last time), it doesn't sound to me like he's bullshitting about this. Well, sorry folks, but I just had to let it out, and I think you guys are the only ones that can understand the mood I've been in for two days now. And to top it off, I've to go back to work tomorrow, to put up with my fucking assholy boss. I think I'll show up with a pair of sunglasses and bump into some glass door for a change... ;-) Luv, Cris ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Apr 2002 18:38:13 -0400 From: "Chuck Simmons" Subject: OV: uncut review Andrew wrote: "It's a got a rather poor review of the album, which disappoints me as they usually get it right." Well, they have Scotland qualifying for the World Cup finals in the review, and though I'm sure that many on our list would love that to be "right", it's wrong. So their football references lose all credibility after that. And did Del Amitri ever "fill stadiums"? - - ------------------------------------------- DEL AMITRI : Can You Do Me Good? 1.5stars! (out of 5) First sighting in four years of melodic Scottish soft rockers. The last we heard from Del Amitri was just before the 1998 World Cup when they performed the Scottish team's official theme song, "Don't Come Home Too Soon". As another World Cup rolls around, Scotland have scraped into the finals once more, but Del Amitri are struggling to find the form that once filled stadiums. Can You Do Me Good? is a collection of decent songs, and "Baby It's Me" and "Last Cheap Shot At The Dream" hint at former glories. What they lack, though, is a match-winner. The craft and skill are present but the fire and passion are not. It's as if they've settled for mid-table safety, knowing they're no longer going to make the Champions League. I have to admit that I don't like Justins idea of quitting if the album does not sell 300 000 times or more. I think that a musician should make music because he loves it to make music - not to make money! If it's money that Justin wants, there's better and safer ways to achieve this. But if it's music he loves to make, well... then he should be proud of every single person he makes lucky with his songs. I don't care what chart position the Dels get - what counts for me is their chart position in my heart. And there they're at number one. Have been since I first knew them, and will ever be. That's why I have to say: If it really depends on the amount of copies sold if the Dels quit or not - then they should quit right now, without even waiting. If you don't do what you're doing because it makes you happy just doing it, then you should stop. Dirk ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Apr 2002 04:36:28 EDT From: Bokken2@aol.com Subject: Re: OV: 300 000 copies... Dirk, I think you misunderstood. What I got from that article is that due to lagging sales over the last few albums that if the magic number of 300,000 isn't reached, THE LABEL would more than likely give up on THEM. I certainly don't think Justin is money driven in his music making. I think he would have gone about things much differently up to this point if he were. Labels setting quotas is nothing new. My own band has been set a quota of 5000 by the end of this year by several labels to even get a deal. That's an unfortunate part of this business: lawyers and accountants making artistic decisions based on math. Dirk I think you've slightly misinterpreted what was written in the Independent. The article doesn't mean that Justin will be quitting if they don't sell 300,000 copies - but that Mercury will be dropping them. Personally, I don't think that would be a bad thing. They'll be able to either get another contract or to set up their own label without being completely dependent upon Mercury's whims. Though without the big money behind them, they maybe won't be able to tour so much or so lavishly. We'll just have to wait and see what the future holds. They've never done anything other than make music - it's all they know and what they love doing. Even when they were waiting tables or mucking out at the farm they were still writing and playing. I can't imagine Justin ever settling down to being just an office worker or supermarket shelf filler.
