At last a chance to hear the new tracks as they should be heard, on a CD player, Hi-Fi system with the volume turned up. Was really pleased that the local shop opened this bank holiday Monday and having fought by way through the crowds of people eager to buy the new single (Ok, I was the only one), it was great to hear the new tracks. They also had the promo of the album on one of their listening stations but no advertising material. I maybe middle aged and old fashioned but is the last few months really the way to listen to and hear about new music? Whilst I appreciate the efforts of the two websites in being able to make the single and b-sides available, it just isn't the same, especially if you are on a 56K modem (buffering.. please wait etc.) As for the album?, well I make no excuses in that I have had a copy of the promo for over a week now and still can't understand some of the earlier comments about this album ("sold themselves to Soul", "It's different", "The new album is not going to be to everyone's taste", "I am not saying you WILL like it" ,"only 3-4 of the tracks were immediately liked when I heard it", etc. etc. .) I have to totally disagree, just when you are wondering if this is a really great or brilliant album along comes the last track, "Just Getting By", absolutly beautiful.. Tracy, Libby and Joe, certainly got it right. Even the non editted version of JBYL (sorry Doug, over five minutes long:) ) somehow seems better than the single and makes a great opening track but I still feel it doesn't represent the rest of the album and wish they had chosen another track as the single (Cash and prizes, or Drunk in a Band gets my vote, but there are so many more to choose from). To me, this album has a late sixties feel to it and some of the songs wouldn't be out of place on a Beatles album. Yes, this album is definitely Del Amitri's "Sgt. Pepper" and "Just Getting By" is Justin's "Yesterday", but there again I'm pretty sozzled at the moment... So for those that haven't heard it yet, your in for a treat!! Cheers Mike ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Apr 2002 15:42:09 +0100 From: "Jane Armstrong" Subject: OV: Farce So, the single was released today. I made a special trip into town AGAIN to buy the ten copies I'd ordered from HMV. When I got there I discovered that there were none at all on the shelves, and only two copies of my order. What a farce!!! The local Our Price did have 14 copies though (I've bought my multiple copies from them in the past so maybe they think this is a popular area for Del fans). I will have to go back again later this week (wasting another precious day) - as I need to buy them now so it counts towards chart position. If HMV haven't got my order in, then I shall cancel it and go elsewhere. But they said they have no idea when it'll be there and they reckon it's a distribution problem. Why am I not surprised??? I reckon Del Amitri should be paying us expenses as it costs in petrol money and car parking every time we have to go and look for the bloody thing!!! Well at least it HAS been released, even if no-one can actually BUY it. This is a Del Amitri cd. It's NOT a Commissioner Gordon cd. As with any Dels album, it took some time to grow on me, but grow it did. Like a fungus. Couldn't stop it if you tried. For reasons unknown, I'm NOT fond of Cash & Prizes, but that's okay. I like Drunk In A Band; Buttons On My Clothes; Last Cheap Shot At The Dream; ah hell, all the rest of 'em!! While I've never found the connection with Make It Always Be Too Late, I think Justin realized that he was being just a little too removed, and wrote an incredible ballad in Just Getting By. (hmmm once again, writing what I'm feeling...) And I can't help but hear John Lennon in Jesus Saves. There I said it. Nothing there yet and it says the singles take 1-2 weeks! Unfortunately non of the shops around here even acknowledge the new single on their websites. Apology accepted! Well this sounds promising so you might not get that scathing review you're all looking forward too. Let's face it, the world isn't ready for a Curtis Mayfield tribute CD by white guys with that um video, but it's just one song and shame on me for thinking the first single would actually represent the album. ;) Yahoo!
