It's a good album - unmistakably Devlins. I'm pretty sure you can buy it from www.thedevlins.com but most of the people on the mailing list (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thedevlins/) bought our copy from an Irish website www.irishmusicmail.com as it wasn't released in Britain either. They fell over themselves to be helpful. A wonderful company. There are some reviews on the mailing list - which has public archives - if you want to have a look - they're mostly around October time last year. I also went over to Dublin to see them during the Consent tour, and the songs translate really well live. As mentioned I ordered both singles + album from amazon.de on March, 13. Then release dates April, 1 and 8. Now I just checked again and they list the singles as not or no longer available and the CD has a new release date: April, 15. It has also dropped roughly one third in price?! Everybody who likes to do so feel free to tell me my mistakes. Five year wait..and everything still at it?s best (amazon.de customer kregenow, Hamburg) No, Justin Currie will never be a popstar. But luckily he doesn?t want to be. His dislike for so-called ?celebrities? is blatantly obvious. Although he has all necessary prerequisites himself: he?s open, friendly, handsome and he has loads of charisma. But unfotunately, he also has expectations. On himself and on his music. And those become more than clear when you listen to the new Del Amitri album ?Can you do me good??. This might not be the first change of direction the band did in their now 17-year-carrer, but this step should be quite a surprise to longtime fans. Currie freely admits this (with a grin). Who thought the band would simply start anew where they left off five years ago with their last studio album ?SOSP?, has to reorient themselves enormously. ?We didn?t want to do another album that sounded like the live gig of a rock?n?roll band?, says Currie. At the same time they took a definite step away from the folk roots, with which neither Currie nor his partner Iain Harvie want to be confronted ever again. On the same breath, both, however, emphasise that guitar soli will continue to be an essential part of their music. Everything else, however, has been newly defined, not the last by their choice of producer. Commissioner Gordon, who so far has been active in Reggae and New York Rap, not only introduced a new and more spontaneous way into studio work, he also put his very own signature to the music. The so far rather simple sound of Justin Currie?s bass playing gathers in strength, Andy Alston?s keyboards sometimes trickle through the songs in a soundtrackesque playfullness, Mark Price behind his drumkit can prove that he is more than a so-so rock?n?roller and mandolines and accordeons remained in the cupboard this time around. Another result of consequent first time use of electronic, as early as in the composing stage. The most surprising and confusing fact, however, is the playfullness which bursts forth from all arrangements. Not that Del Amitri were so far known for some kind of grimness, but this completely relexed lightness is new. As new as the use of loops and samples. Maybe it is the answer to the years-long argument with the record company. ?We wrote songs for two years, recorded demos, but the record company didn?t like a single one. The five-year-wait surely wasn?t planned.? All the more surprising that this selection of 12 songs finally made it. If you point out that more than half of those are clearly over the three-minute-limit he himself so vigorously set at one time, he laughs out loud and points out that a lot of things change in five years. Then he prefers to change the subject, talks about his musical preferences, which are reflected on this album more clearly than on any previous one. Indeed, Del Amitri may have never sounded so explicitely British than on this album. If this, however, makes you think of 80s Britpop you will be dissappointed. Here you are more likely to find reminiscences to the 60s. (Without overdoing it) ?Can you do me good?? does leave roughly the same impression as the Beatles? ?Revolver? must have on release: a shock on the one hand, but on the other hand a deceisive step forward. And Del Amitri were most surely never better than with this record. True fans (and the band has quite a few of those) will surely find this out, if only whilst listening to the whole album for the third time. For all others I can only hope that they give ?Can you do me good?? a chance, to be ensnarled by this record, which uses the whole bandwith from dreamy soulballads to rough punk-links, and still remains in balance in a most wondefull way. If this album contains the so longingly wished for N? 1, Currie doesn?t dare prophesise. ?The decision which song to release as a single is still up to the record company. And on the other hand I?m not very good in judging the chances of my own songs.? Said and he turns to melancholically look outside and watch Hamburg?s slow-falling rain. I?d wish it for him and Del Amitri in any case. After so far 17 top-40-hits and the unique title of honour ?best rock?n?roll band ever to play a parking lot in Kentucky?. But if it is not to be another time around, it?s surely not due to the music. Rather due to the fact that Del Amitri are too good for this fast-spinning world, in which music enters through one ear only to leave again through the other. Hope this helps Birgit www.clickfish.com - der menschliche Internet-Guide. Ein Portal f?r alle, die kompetente Hilfe und Beratung im Internet suchen.
