A rather nice glossy colour effort with the new promo photos etc on it. Tour details, CD details and a few words from Justin: "Many people ask me in the street, in the supermarket, in my kitchen first thing in the morning what exactly Del Amitri have been doing for four years since our greatest hits was shamelessly foisted upon the world in 1998 and it would seem appropriate in this forum to set the record straight once and for all. We have, to all intents and purposes been in the pub. After a British tour in the fall of '98 the band decided to have a long think over a beer and three years later this culminated in the miraculous completion of our album "Can You Do Me Good?", a record that took so long to write and record due mainly to the fact that we knew the landlord and were drunk pretty much the entire time. Consequently much of the record deals with issues central to British pub life; atheism, drugs, money and the merits of seafood flavoured crisps. In a last desperate attempt to get the record finished at all, in February 2001 we sent ourselves to Teaneck, New Jersey, to be marshalled and motivated by one Gordon Williams (or Commissioner Gordon), who having had no experience whatsoever of white Scottish pop groups, didn't seem to mind at all when we quietly slid off our seats in the middle of a take usually mumbling something about tits. All in all we're terrible pleased with ourselves. We may be wincing through a colossal four year hangover but the L.P. which has emerged from this haze is undoubtedly a thing of beauty indeed. Along the way we seem to have learned a number of new skills which have been brought to bear on how we now make records. We can programme and loop a little. We can turn things backwards and detune things and make all matter of unnatural noises sound natural. We know how to make guitars sound like chimpanzees and we can make a cocktail out of Guinness, Malibu and red wine that will bend your knees the other way. Once we'd finalised the running order, done a bunch of B-sides and had a few snaps taken it was damn nearly Christmas and time to get back to the pub to hide from false gods, pulp idols and pop pretenders. Now here we come blinking back into the light, that most old fashioned of things - the snotty little rock group with a bunch of cracking tunes, ready for everything, everywhere, every time. Justin Currie, lead singer, drunk, in a band called Del Amitri." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Mar 2002 06:44:42 EST From: MinervAthene@aol.com Subject: OV: Re: Live floor show!!!! Jane - couldn't agree more about getting the heads up on these things. I don't actually like the Live Floor Show, and it was pure coincidence that I caught last nights - and yes, I managed to record it! I'm convinced it was just miming to the single - the backing track certainly, although Justin may have been singing. He was definitely singing live (and pretty damn well!) to Just Like A Man at the end of the show. For Just Before You Leave, Iain was standing with his guitar (which I'm not sure even features on the track!) and Kris on bass. To be honest, they looked pretty bored. Justin's "I Love Britpop" t-shirt was pretty amusing though! Sarah << Thanks Claire - I wish I'd been able to see it! Anyone out there catch it and manage to record it? It is so annoying and frustrating that JPR aren't communicating when they're on. All it would take would be one little email with the weekly schedule .... How did it sound live? Was is played acoustically, or with full band and electric guitars? Did they use string effects? Or were they just miming to the single version?? >> ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Mar 2002 11:56:24 -0000 From: "Hilary Gray" Subject: OV: Re: The frank miller fans are getting restless The exchanges between them and Justin are hilarious, but what is worrying me is would we be acting in the same way if the boot was on the other foot, so to speak? I vaguely remember a minor hit record from Frankie Miller in the 70's called Darlin'. But apparently he's written quite a few songs for other people. He's certainly not the major influence on Scottish music that the fans are making out. Don't know why they're making so much fuss about the Dels not appearing though. Judging by the list of artists appearing on the Tribute CD as listed on his website they've got more than enough for a double album. Quietly they've gone about their business, turning out four albums of dependably accomplished and unfashionable rock with a middle America twang. Their first studio album since 1997's Some Other Sucker's Parade, Can You Do Me Good? is another solid addition to the Del Amitri canon. Sticking resolutely to their earthy, no-frills values, it's hardly going to set the world alight, but with singer Justin Currie's cunning metaphors for love, drugs and self-loathing undiminished, it certainly shouldn't be underestimated. Mid-tempo country jaunts "Buttons on My Clothes" and "Baby It's Me" are by turns sweet and poignant, cementing their reputation as the Glaswegian Crowded House. But, like his melodies, Currie's lyrics are deceptive slow-burners with an inherent darkness. Although the brooding "Just Before You Leave" and cynical dissection of greed "Cash & Prizes" clearly aren't the sound of a happy man, they pale next to "Wash Her Away", which comes on like a lustful love song, and mutates into a troubled ode to addiction with every subsequent play. It's not alone, which is just as well, because heavy hearted introspection is what Del Amitri do best. --Dan Gennoe ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Mar 2002 18:22:20 EST From: SngWrite1@aol.com Subject: OV: Album cover question So, does anyone know who the woman is holding the book on the cover of the new album? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Mar 2002 19:44:41 -0800 (PST) From: Debbie Cushing Subject: Re: OV: The frank miller fans are getting restless Are we supposed to know who the heck this Frank Miller guy is? Del Amitri, musically, have had their time. We hope, as fans, that there's a bit more to come but they will never be more successful. The singles buying market in dominated by spotty boys and girls singles of ... erm spotty boys and girls. Adults tape, download or cd-write more than ever so the album market is hardly as lucrative as it was. Music is downsizing in every respect and groups like The Dels are amongst its loser, never really having been a major group. Interestingly, Cardiff's Millenium stadium have just about thrown in the towel on a major gig this summer. Quite simply, there's hardly anyone who can fill it. The Strokes have got the market sussed. They appeal to those spotty boys and girls, they also appeal to adults. And having saw them live in Birmingham 3 weeks ago, they are supreme live too, fantastic gig. Ryan Adams? Fresh face, new music but hardly a major name, is he? Seems to me that the Dels lost too much momentum being inactive for 4 to 5 years, not even the greatest and biggest groups can afford to do that. They have been forgotten about. When I told my mates I was going to see them, a few seemed shocked they were still around, another asked how long ago they re-formed. ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V4 #75 *********************************
