They just played Del Amitri!!! I think it was Always the Last to Know, I was too psyched to even be able to remember. But the best part is, that the DJ talked afterwards about the new cd coming out, and said that its FANTASTIC. Which means two things: 1- the cd must be coming out here in Spain (and other parts of Europe as well, I presume) B- their record company IS actually doing some kind of decent promo, if its getting promoted here. He did say, though, that its coming out in April OR early May. Cheers to everyone. I have just seen the new album listed in HMV UK (Title to be confirmed)and was curious to know if any mention of a release in Ausralia has ever ben made. The cost of the CD in the UK equates to around $50 Australian with the exchange rate and it would put it out of the reach of many fans here... This took me forever - I obviously have too much time on my hands, but you can't say I'm not good to you!! :) On Friday (15 March), Justin was interviewed on the Scotland Today news program, and as that has such a small audience, I thought the rest of you might like to read a transcript. The cast: Billy Sloan - showbiz correspondent, interviewer Angus - one of the two newsreaders Justin Currie - for the girlies (and some of the boys!) who I know like to hear this kind of thing, JC was wearing jeans, a dark t-shirt and a dark jacket. Hair is long again, he obviously hadn't shaved in a couple of days, but doesn't look too bad for a man of 37. Ahem. The pair were perched on stools. Oh, and everyone looks pretty daft when you have them paused on the video every ten seconds! Um... the 'What's On' showbiz slot is about 10 minutes, and Justin was there for it all, which is why this gets a little off topic at points. BS: Yeah, our live guest as Angus said today is the lead singer of one of Scotland's best-loved and most successful bands, Del Amitri. Justin Currie, welcome to Scotland Today. JC: Thank you very much BS: Now you've not been around for a couple of years because you've been away writing songs - JC: Oh, I've been around BS: You've been around, you've just not been very visible. But the new album is called Can You Do Me Good?, long time in the making - are you happy with how it's turned out? JC: It's awful, it's dreadful . I'd like to publicly disown this record. Whatever you do, don't buy it, it's rubbish BS: You'll no be saying that in three months when you're at number 835 in the charts JC: I think we're at 835 in the charts *right now* BS: No but what's it like, seriously what's it like? JC It's, well it's a good record, we're chuffed with it and it only took us so long to write because we were sort of dawdling and going to the pub too much BS: And the single from it's called Just Before You Leave, and again it's sort of a musical departure in style for Del Amitri. Was it just an opportunity to try and sort of do something that was a wee bit different? JC: Well, I mean, Iain wrote the backing track, Iain wrote the music and I just really liked it and stuck some lyrics on top. I don't really care whether it sounds like Del Amitri of whether it sounds like, uh, the Sooty and Sweep show. It's just... we like it BS: A good record's a good record JC: Yeah, exactly, yeah BS: Now the video for the single is fantastic. It was a bit of a forerunner for the latest craze for Footballer's Wives because it centres round a character, in the video, a star soccer player called Vick Plectrum JC: Vick Plectrum BS: Now, tee up the clip for us, because this is the bit where Vick has just scored the winning goal in the European Cup Final and his life is transformed. What happens to him? JC: Well, he... it turns out that Vick is a bit of a floozy and he's so flushed with success, and probably testosterone, which I believe is a hormone - - a male hormone - which is activated by the playing of football and watching football BS: Get on with it, get on with it! JC: And eh, anyway, so he ends up dancing with a couple of people - a couple of "boirds" [birds, I assume, in an odd accent] in a lap dancing club and makes a bit of a fool of himself in the press - the press catch him out BS: And his wife throws him out and the marriage is on the rocks JC: Exactly BS: Now, there's something you're deliberately not telling us about this video JC: Well, all the characters are played by finger puppets BS: Right. You're being serious (?) JC: Yeah. You know, they are, that was the thing we liked about the whole treatment. We're big fans of finger puppets. It's kind of like a cross between Hector's House and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. BS: Living on the edge of rock and roll. You wanted Del Amitri, we have given you finger puppets. Let's take a look at the video BS: Be honest: when the band sat down and watched that back for the first time, what was their reaction? JC: We just fell about laughing. Actually, we went to the shooting of the video, which was great. It's the only video we've not been in ourselves, so we didn't have to do anything. We just sat around and pointed and laughed. There's a great bit, I don't know if it's in the video, but as soon as we got there, there was this puppeteer guy who was getting Vick to take a penalty actually, which is the winning goal in this fictitious UEFA Cup Final, and he accidentally burst the net, which wasn't meant to happen, and I think they kept it in, 'cos the net wasn't stapled down to the wee bit of turf BS: So is this the way ahead for Del Amitri, then - finger puppets in the videos? JC: I tell you, see not being in your own videos, it's great. You get a day off. You don't have to do anything - you don't have to lose weight for a week, you know. It's great BS: Now, you're going to be coming back to do some gigs to promote the album and of course you play the Barrowland in Glasgow on the 9th of May - JC: Oh, is that right? Okay BS: That's a place that always hold very dear memories for you. I mean, you've had some great gigs there over the years, haven't you? JC: Yeah some great gigs, and ungreat gigs I'm a great fan of the Barrowlands. If you look at the fabric of the place it's not actually changed in about three thousand years. It's fantastic. There's still fossilised remnants of The Rolling Stones walking around BS: I mean, when you're on stage and the Barrowland crowd are going full tilt, what's the feeling like? Can you put that into words, the kind of energy you get back from the capacity crowd? JC: Just magic, really, you know. I mean the first time we played there we were totally shocked that all these people suddenly came crawling out of the woodwork in Glasgow - had never seen us before, or just never reacted like that. Cos I mean, until you play Barrowlands, Glasgow crowds are very famous for just going "What's that all about?" you know - "That's rubbish". And then suddenly once you get to Barrowlands everybody goes "We now approved of you" and - maybe it's 'cos they just get drunk, I don't know. BS: Well, if you want to see Del Amitri and Justin Currie live at the Barrowland, once again the date is the 9th of May. They'll be playing tracks from their brand new album Can You Do Me Good?, which you've heard straight from the horses mouth is not worth buying - JC: Are you calling me a horse? BS: - so don't bother buying it. And of course another big gig that's coming up this summer is on the 16th of June - the Irn Bru Live and Loud Event. Now it was announced this week, and again it's one for the kids, because this year you can see Liberty X, Aurora, Samantha Mumba, A1 and one of the bill toppers, Blue, who of course were voted Best Newcomers at the recent Brit Awards. And just in case you needed reminded of what Blue are all about, here's a clip of the band in action. JC: BS: Isn't it reassuring that there's at least one band in Britain making quality pop music these days? JC: Please don't look at me! I have a mild allergy to pop singers [explains all the scratching through the interview!] BS: No, but seriously, although musically the Irn Bru Live and Loud Event won't be your cup of tea necessarily, when you were nine and ten, you wouldn't have had any opportunity, I guess, to go to a big live outdoor, open-air gig JC: Well, I used to get dragged along by my big sisters to the Annual Kelvingrove Rock Festival, which was always really profoundly awful! But I remember, I mean, it was a good thing just being a kid and actually seeing bands play live BS: But I mean, is it good for kids to go along to Irn Bru Live and Loud and, you know, and buy a ticket and get their first taste of a big concert atmosphere? JC: I mean, if you're a pop fan - we've done that thing in London, the big thing in Hyde Park, you get up and you sing your song in front of all these pop fans. I think it's pretty good to see these people in the flesh that you'll never see, you know - hear on the radio or see in the video, and actually go "Oh God," you know, "They exist - I could do that" BS: Well, Irn Bru Live and Loud, June the 16th, Bellhouston Park in Glasgow. Tickets are on sale now - Blue, Liberty X, Aurora, Samantha Mumba and A1. And another legendary singer who is heading this way plays the Contrahall [?] in Glasgow on the 2nd of July. He's something like 82 years of age these days. He's Tony - 72 years, I take that back - Tony Bennet. He's going to be headlining the Contrahall in Glasgow on the 2nd of July as part of the Glasgow International Jazz Festival, and here's a clip of the great man in action. BS: As Angus said there, he's looking not bad for 82, he's probably nearer 70 - - don't start winding me up! JC: BS: I mean, Tony Bennet, he's had incredible success, he's hip with all the young rockers. What do you think is the secret of his longevity? JC: You're asking me what I think is the secret of Tony Bennet's longevity? Eh, I imagine vitamin C and botox - I have no idea! BS: Are you an admirer of his voice, of his singing talents? JC: He's not a bad crooner. I was always a bit more of a Deano fan, to be honest. I was never a big Frank fan, I'll say that. But eh, Deano, and eh... actually, the women of that era I'm more of a fan of - big Peggy Lee fan, and big Ella fan. BS: Well, you've kindly brought us in some copies of your album, that's absolute rubbish, I should just point that out once again And we've got a great free music competition for you to enter. Up for grabs are five copies of Del Amitri's new album, Can You Do Me Good?, signed by Justin himself... [blah, blah - I'll skip this bit. The question was an oh-so-difficult multiple choice to pick out 'Nothing Ever Happens' as a genuine Dels song title] BS: Eh - what was the first gig you ever went to? We're having a party here, Scotland! What was the first gig you ever went to? JC: First gig I ever went to was Dr Feelgood at the Glasgow Apollo BS: Okay, there you are - back to you Angus! Sigh - isn't Scottish television so professional at times?! Hope you enjoyed the read.
