I hate to contribute to the insanity, but unfortunately, as it has been mentioned in OV before, the US radio-tracking vibe is much different than elsewhere... BDS (Broadcast Data Service (http://www.bdsonline.com/) tracks song airplay in the States - for better or worse. They track songs, not artists - so if the band say "play this song" and that's not what's been released by the label - well, that's not what the label may say that they've invested their promo money on and unfortunately then they would be at crossed purposes to promote the artist in the marketplace. Sad, but true. One of the joys of major label promotion that no one talks about...they're not entirely flexible in their efforts.... Cheers, Jen P.S. Yes, still working on the LLC stuff, but it's been a strange week....please be patient.... - ----Original Message Follows---- From: SngWrite1@aol.com To: oppositeview@smoe.org Subject: OV: OT: Weezer upsets label (hooray!) Date: Wed, 6 Mar 2002 12:23:11 EST I just read an interesting article about how Weezer sent CD's with 4 songs from their upcoming album to radio stations along with a letter from the band. Naturally, the stations began playing these songs and now some of them are charting from airplay. Now Interscope (who owns Geffen, their label) is up in arms and telling the band to request that the stations not play the new songs until the label is ready to service the first single (which is one of the songs on the disc). The band had previously upset the label by posting demos of the entire album online. http://www.billboard.com/daily I find this hilarious. "Hey don't play the songs until WE want you to play the songs. And we only want you to play this ONE song." Just goes to show you how idiotic major labels can be. "Airplay? Oh my goodness NO! How can we possibly put an end to this!? We want to control what people hear, we don't want to leave it up to the band and the radio stations!" Just thought you'd get a kick of that. (It's under negotiation) Unfortunately, these dates clash with another tour... Might be able to make the Astoria though - since I'm not driving down to Cardiff that night. I always get confused when people talk about Wilco - we have the wonderful Wilco Johnson over here, ex Dr Feelgood, who is frequently mentioned by just his first name. For ages I thought they were one and the same.... Duh!!! Jane > I just noticed that Wilco will also be playing a few shows in the UK and > Europe in May. The dates, (courtesy of Pollstar), follow. I'd love to hear a bit of enlightenment from some of you UK OVers about Justin's rant against the royalty & the Jubilee. Is this his personal politics or a national feeling of hostility against the royal ones by Scots in general? And (thank God) Iain has posted too; he's a breath of fresh air amongst Justin's ramblings and discourses. He seems genuinely offended at what Clapton and McCartney have become in their later years. Speaking of the formerly-known-as-talented-still-goes-by-the-name-McCartney - he's just announced a US tour. $150 bucks to hear him belting out that utter crap "Freedom" song, no thanks. When I was watching him play during the Concert For New York I thought, "Haven't these people suffered enough?" Dave PS - Hey Mercury actually has them doing promotional events - with an open bar! That's dangerous enough with just the band, but they actually invited others! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Mar 2002 22:35:56 -0000 From: "Jane Armstrong" Subject: OV: Re: dear diary I don't know why Justin is so upset. Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton have been doing charity gigs for Prince Charles' Prince's Trust for the past 15-20 years or so - thus it was only natural they'd be invited, since it was Charlie boy who put together the list of performers - along with Harry Pothead and Wills. It's nothing new - and I wouldn't exactly say they've sold out. Don't know why he's so bitter and twisted about the Royal Family. Most English people are treating the Jubilee with the greatest of indifference. Dunno about the Scots. But listen to Septic Jubilee too. He's really got it in for the Windsors. Who knows what goes on inside Justin's head?! Jane > Has anyone read the two new diary entries on Kev's web site?
