Well done Dels for a bold move. The sounds are different but the lyrical content is still there. They make me sit up and listen, my friends who are force feed the new single every time they enter my house, have two main comments. The video is causing a lot of stir, will MTV pick it up Footballers wives are the IN-THING in the UK just now with posh and becks and the tv programme and this months maxim magazine and the other is "God is that Del Amitri" at least it make them listen to the song and perhaps remember it. But I think the video may be the key to this song as it was with Roll to Me (which was a great song but it was helped by a unique funny video, helped in the USA but not it the UK, just before the UK Boom of Satellite I feel) When U2 brought out Actung Baby every one went "U2 using computers etc. shock horror", it becomes their classic album. When Queen used synths for the first time on the Game album everyone went "shock horror!" but it was till Queen. The same will happen I hope with the dels. What we need is the people in the know who have heard the album, to past to the list and tell the people what it is like. Andy Hutch has already said the album is great. All reviews posted so far have been good reviews. Perhaps the dels have developed and now are using Computers more because they may feel they have pushed their guitar based music to their own limits or Justin and Iain felt like a change. The music press are pushing this new guitar driven non manufactured music e.g The Strokes and The Hives. The Hives must be the most Manufactured band around just now and the Strokes (whom I do enjoy the music) are Rich little Kids who want to be Cool Rock stars, "Sorry Mum and Dad I don't want to go to Boarding School in Switzerland I want to play in a band and dress like them poor people and take lots of dope" Some of you may not agree with what I say, but everyone one on this list I feel are the true loyal fans of the dels, and as one post sent to me said "If the dels released a record banging 2 garbage cans together I would buy it", and so would i. Blind loyalty to the Greatest Band in the world, followed by the Thompson Twins, why don't they tour again!!!. Sorry for the Long rant But as the release date gets closer and the tour you realise, that it has been 4 years since anything has been released 4 years since I have seen them Live, but what of you Americans and Aussies, you must be "Chomping at the bit" as we say in Scotland. I am taking my position off the menu here, this comes from me as a fan, not as a statement from webmaster Kev. The new album is not going to be to everyone's taste, but I think you are over-reacting on something you quite honestly have not given chance. Del Amitri have taken a very different approach with this new album, yes there is computer help, yes it's a different sound. It even pongs a bit of soul. BUT - there is an undertone on the album that just oozes Del Amitri. Take "Buttons On My Clothes", as jolly as "Always the last to know" with great harmonies and it's pure old-time Del. Last Cheap Shot At The Dream, again its brilliant. Even Jesus Saves has a ring of the Twisted era. And "Drunk In A Band" will have you thinking it was recorded live, rocking and the live Del experience! I could go on, but it won't make any difference until you hear it. Now don't read me wrong here, I am not saying you HAVE to like the new stuff, but I am saying don't knock it until you have heard the rest of it. I am not saying you WILL like it, it took me a week to get into a lot of the songs - only 3-4 of the tracks were immediately liked when I heard it, JBYL was not one of them. I still aren't keen on 2 tracks on the album, the rest are blasted out as loud as I can, and in my eyes JBYL is right up there. It grows on you, you find yourself foot tapping and singing loud. Anyway, just to keep the cynics happy, I will be putting up a song today that will hopefully reassure you that Del Amitri haven't dramatically changed from what they were. You can't teach an old dog new tricks they say, well maybe not, but Del Amitri have kept their old tricks to perform, but have also added some tinsel and neon signs. Like it? You might. Hate it? some will, but don't judge them until you have heard it, that's a fair thing to ask isn't it? Nuff said. But I still wouldn't have classed it as singles material. However, I LOVE I'm an Unbeliever. For me it defines what I fell in love with as far as Del Amitri is concerned. That guitar bit at the end...... wow!! I can imagine that going down brilliantly live, with Iain and Kris playing off each other. I think it's one of the best Dels tracks I've heard in years. And You Love Me is a lovely song - on first hearing - I need to listen to it a few more times. And oddly enough - though Kev told me yesterday that I'd hate Belong Belong - and it's not the sort of production I'd normally go for - I actually quite like it. As Kev says, don't condemn it all off-hand. I've heard bits of most of the album, and though I will need convincing with some of the tracks, the basic song writing is still there. Buttons On My Clothes is absolutely wonderful. Drunk In A Band rocks. And Just Getting By is just beautiful. And I loved Last Cheap Shot from the tour - haven't really heard the album version though. The tracks I've heard are certainly better played loudly through a decent stereo than over the PC or a phone line. Its only those 3 songs I've heard now off the new album but I'm having a hard time keeping a grin off my face. 'Just Before you Leave' somehow reminds me of 'Three Little Words' or some of those songs from awhile back, and I like it a lot. The video isn't what I would have expected had I heard the song by itself first, but somehow hearing these heartbreak lyrics while watching stick puppets struck me as funny - I chuckled at the ironing board scene, but laughed out loud at the way the wife chucks his clothes out the window... I was cheering her on! 'Belong Belong' is quite a surprise - techno Dels?? Fascinating. The song show off Justin's pipes. But 'I'm A Unbeliever', oooh that's one that might shoulda been the single. Like Jane, I also look forward to seeing this one done in concert to see how Kris and Iain play off each other during the guitar bits. I'm eternally hoping for another Kestrel Road, you see, but I guess I'll live without it... Its been a disappointment to me to read sooo much bitter and harsh criticism here on OV about the new material, and of all the silly reasons its because I worry that if Justin or the band read it, their feelings would be hurt. After all the delays & the hassles trying to get the album released at all, here their core fan base is slicing the new stuff to bits for the most part when it seems like a more appreciative & encouraging tone would be what the band would hope to hear from us. But by nature I'm one who doesn't criticise, even when its needed sometimes... I'm 'too nice', one of my art students told me back when I was teaching art classes, but my reluctance to criticise comes from 20 years of presenting artwork to the public that I'd poured heart and soul into, only to have some casual observers glance at it and dismiss it with a 'my kid could do that' or 'let me tell you about my uncle he's an artist too' or 'she didn't get that perspective right' when I know I nailed the perspectiv e. I live for the people who come up to a drawing and for a moment can't take their eyes off what I've done because it speaks to them - they understand what I was trying to say, and it touches their hearts. These days I'm more dedicated than ever to only drawing what I feel compelled to draw and I like to think that the band is also that dedicated to making music that truly expresses what they have to say. I may be naive, or simply wrong but I've always thought I sensed an honesty & an originality in the band's music overall that deserved respect... Time for me to hush. I don't quite understand this as this is supposed to be somewhere you can speak freely about what you think. What were we supposed to do? Listen to it and remain silent other than, "Thanks for posting the music on the websites, it's all very different"? I think that that would have been the least silent way to say what we were thinking. I know that I've not been the only sceptic on some of these tracks (I've not seen the vid yet, by the way), but it felt like I'd committed some horrible crime just by ranting on late at night on my very first listen to the stuff. And as for anyone being upset that the posts are about repeat listening to grow used to these new tracks, isn't that the same for a lot of things? I know that the only two albums that spring to mind that I immediately fell in love with every track were U2's "All That You Can't Leave Behind" and the Dels SOSP. Speaking of U2, I've been there for them throughout all of their experimenting and have never strayed. It will be the same for Del Amitri because, as someone else mentioned being, I'm a fan of the band, not just some of their music. Please don't try to deny people the chance to rant on about this sort of thing on here because chances are, like me, they don't know anyone who likes the Dels. This is certainly my only chance to discuss/debate anything to do with them. I was astounded when the only two people that I've tried to force Del Amitri on previously said the following: First night with new boyfriend (who'd been a friend for many years) while listening (and enthusiastically pointing favourite bits out) to SOSP "I still think that Justin's voice always sounds the same, and I've just never really liked their music" (at which point I realised that a relationship with this man was never going to work - how alarming is that?!!) and Friend from work who took home The Best of ... "We didn't get much further than the first track..." (I've forgiven her now, but I wasn't happy that she'd said it in front of any other possible converts.) So you see, I've got to be allowed to air my views here, cause this is the only thing I've got where people understand my feelings for them. Glad you understand.
