It's been a while since these Scottish purveyors of fine guitar pop released an album. Often denigraded as sub-Crowded House/Roachford, the band, fronted by Justin Currie (bass/vocals/guitar) and Iain Harvie (guitars) have a list of excellent hits to their credit that ably challenge that erroneous view. There's plenty of electric and acoustic guitar here and, as ever, Currie's astute and wordly lyrics pervade the album. But different producers have brought new beats and sounds to some of his songs. While Buttons On My Clothes, Out Falls The Past, She's Passing This Way, Jesus Saves, Just Getting By and Wash Her Away are classic Del Amitri, there's a new edge here which some will love and others not. I adore it. By Neville Marten It got 4 and a half stars (out of 5) which meant excellent/outstanding! Yea!! I can't wait to hear it. I thought surely a comment like mine would bring all those Justin adorees out of the shadows to defend his bass prowness. Never thought of myself as one to try to stir up trouble, and it looks like I didn't succeed this time so I'd best give it up. Where's Doug and Russell when we need them. I'm right here 1-800-DOOUUUG! Soooo what can I say, I hope this is the worst song on the album. Sadly for many of our worst fears may have been realized. Cry To Be Found did in fact apparently mark a change in direction for the band rather than a one off slip of the brain, that we could never forgive them for, but we might someday forget. Please for the sake of the future of music someone find all the string programmers in the music industry and DROWN them. What are these people (sadly a lot of Brits and even formerly great bands like the Devlins) thinking, by taking what could possibly be bearable songs and putting these ridiculous fake violin sounds in them? Please oh please, let's all hope the rest of the album doesn't mirror the level of artistic achievement Justin reached with his diary entries like this song does. Yahoo! I actually sent email to ATO Records (the US home to David Gray) and Nettwerk America (the US home to Neil Finn & The Devlins) telling them that a great band is on the market. Dave ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2002 20:57:58 -0800 From: Darren Holmquist Subject: OV: Justin talks One of the questions Justin answered on Kev's site, centered on the 1986 eponymous first album. I thought it was very interesting: I personally am extremely proud of the first LP partly because it IS sixth form poetry at its very most naked and embarrassing. The songs were written mainly when I was seventeen or eighteen and recorded when I was nineteen and twenty(I turned twenty in the middle of doing the vocal for 'Heard Through a Wall') but I never encourage Del Amitri fans who came to the band in the nineties to check it out because I consider it a different era and a different band. Iain and I seriously considered changing the group's name before Waking Hours was released because we realised that four young guys in a room experimenting with guitars and lyrics and creative democracy in the early eighties is a very different kettle of fish to two songwriters hiring a rock group to play and arrange fairly traditional tunes at the turn of the decade.Hope that explains our reticence to promote the eponymous record on Chrysalis. In truth I'm proud of everything we've done because it was the very best we could do at the time.JC ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 08:21:59 -0000 From: "Libby Graham" Subject: OV: Idea for individuals to help promote radioplay ..... Amen!!! Doug and I actually agree on something here! Too many "strings" not enough guitars! Where are Iain and Kris's contributions to this track? Well maybe it's Iain on bass.... but I like the rockier Del Amitri or the plain, unadulterated acoustic Dels. And unfortunately, as far as I can tell from the 30 second snippets I've heard down a crackly phone line, there's only one "rock" track on the album :-( However, everyone I've spoken to who has heard it properly say it's a great record - so I should wait until I've had a chance to listen to it at least half a dozen times before passing final judgement. One consolation. They HAVE to play guitar in their live gigs - otherwise Iain and Kris might just as well sit down and have a permanent fag break on stage - or even not bother turning up at all. Oh well - looking forward to going to see Iain play great pedal steel with Eileen Rose's band next Friday! Her new album, Long Shot Novena, produced by Iain and Kris will be released on Monday. It's already had rave reviews in all the music mags and some of the national newspapers. Maybe if Del Amitri records are all going to be sequenced or whatever Iain and Kris should take up permanent residence in Ms Rose's band.
