Scottish Sunday Mail has advert for the Barra's gig, with new logo on the cry to be found cover. I have been pretty disappointed with the Scottish press so far. esp. Billy Sloan, who use to be a big supporter of the dels, their has been no mention in the newspapers at all of any upcoming single/album. At least radio play has been a bit better. ChrisF p.s. As an optimistic cynic who can't bring herself to totally abandon all realistic hopes for a North American release but also is notoriously short on patience, may I ask if HMV is where the single(s) will be available too? What other online places will have the new material available? However - they generally come out in the shops at quite a bit cheaper than the on-line prices for the first week of release. I am more than happy to buy it for you from the shops, and as I've said before, if anyone wants me to get them a copy of the single or album, please let me know and I'll go and pre-order it from my local store. (I'll most probably be cheaper on postage and packing too as I'll recycle the packaging!) The music is upbeat without being abnoxious; quiet without being morose. I can't recommend this disc enough! So, in your music buying frenzy, make sure one of your purchases is the new David Sills disc, "Sometimes Nothing". You'll be glad you did; Dave will be glad you did; it's a win-win situation! :) Darren ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2002 21:55:15 EST From: SngWrite1@aol.com Subject: OV: OT: Thank you thank you Enough about this "Del Amitri" bunch, let's talk more about me! Er... okay I'm only kidding, we can still talk about Del Amitri. But in all seriousness, I do want to sincerely thank those of you who have purchased my CD. It's very cool to have my music being spread around the world (literally - from Japan to The Netherlands!) because of this list. I've been getting wonderful feedback from you all. I hope you continue to enjoy listening to it. Thanks again! Dave Sills ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2002 21:58:22 -0500 From: "Chuck Simmons" Subject: OV: elvis vs del amitri I've been on an Elvis Costello kick for the past few weeks. Armed with a book ("Let Them All Talk") which I don't recommend, nearly all of his albums (no "Almost Blue" "Goodbye Cruel World" or "King of America"), and page after page of lyric sheets, I have been listening and reviewing his music starting at the beginning. I am up to "Mighty Like A Rose" which I was listening to when I read Nigel's e-mail. I've always been an fan of Elvis Costello, but never really felt like I paid quite enough attention to his work. As I have been doing nothing for the past 10 days but lying around with a ruptured Achilles heel, I decided this was the time to delve into the subject. Obviously, he is a great lyricist who probably doesn't get enough credit for his musical judgment. And clearly, he is one of the most prolific artists of our time, with an incredible catalog of great music. This comparison is apples to oranges, but still, give me Del Amitri. The question is why? I'm still searching for my answer, but it would probably have the word "empathy" in it. EC creates a lot of characters and paints a lot of sketches without really making me care too much. Del Amitri's songs are often first person and tear at my heart. Let's not underestimate what this band does well, and let's not judge them by how often their albums come out. Let's judge them by the quality of their music when it does come out. I know that the initial question was about marketing. Del Amiti's marketing could be better, yes, and I'm sure that some of that has to do with past record sales. It's a difficult comparison because other than their ability to turn a phrase (advantage Elvis), I can't think of too much these artists have in common. But I can't let the suggestion that Elvis is an "infinitely better artist" than Del Amitri pass unchallenged. I respect Elvis Costello immensely, and he has been incredibly consistent for an artist that has been around that long, but I'll take Del Amitri's catalog 100 times out of 100. I don't care what the record sales say. Chuck Chuck ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V4 #42 *********************************
