Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 19:01:10 EST Is there an actual website for Mercury Records? I'm curious because I can't find one. No big surprise, since it doesn't even exist in the US anymore. But I even searched for a UK website to no avail. I did hear that Steve Lilliwhite (producer, U2, Dave Matthews, etc) is now the head of Mercury UK and that he was going to be "meeting with artists" over the coming weeks because he wants to trim the roster so he can "have room for some people he'd like to sign". A why is it that you can check out an entire song from Elvis Costello's upcoming album but you can't hear a song from the new Del Amitri record? Both artists' labels fall under the umbrella of Island/Def Jam/Cream Of Wheat/Nike and Del Amitri's record beats Costello to the stores by several weeks (in the UK at least, we still have seen no sign of a US Del release!). I am starting to get REALLY TICKED OFF about this continuing US snub. I'm sure the band wants the record out here, and I'm sure they want to tour here. So who do we call? Whose in box can we clog with email? Whose office can we storm into, leap upon the desk and cry out at the top of our lungs, "GIVE US OUR DAMNED DEL AMITRI YOU CORPORATE WEASEL!" What can we do and is there any way to blame the French? ARRRRRGGGGHHHHHH. Texas (also on Mercury, also from Scotland) has had their last cd (Greatest Hits) and their recent live dvd released everywhere except the U.S. And even though it wasn't Mercury, Julia Fordham's last cd (Collection) never came out in the U.S. and her next cd Concrete Love which is among her best work I might add, was supposed to come out late 2001 and is now in extended delay due to her new label getting closed down by AOL-Time-Warner. I would think that eventually some other label would work out the contractual details and pick up these excellent artists for U.S. distribution. Regarding V-Day, to anyone in Dave's frame of mind, I would highly recommend the movie High Fidelity. Happy V-Day everyone. A balm to all of us longing for another St. Valentine's Day Massacre. A quick exposition on bitterness, the introduction to The Book of Bitterness (http://www.sealander.com/Contents2.html). And to all of you whom I owe mails, let me off the hook this one saccharine day. "Bitterness has a bad rap. Bitter people are often maligned, accused of being a surly bunch of non-productive whiners who are seldom satisfied and never happy. This paints a distorted picture however, since the bitter are in reality, a fairly normal lot, cursed with the ability to see the world as it is. "Bitter people have always understood that the world is not fair. They have known for some time that good guys don't always win. That people are often their own worst enemy. Bitterness is not a condition of despair. It an affirmation of reality. A willingness to call a spade a spade even when the opinion is unpopular and politically incorrect. "Bitterness is a place where all of us have been, but few of us are comfortable. It is a place where the glibly incompetent get promoted and those who toil behind the scenes get discarded like yesterday's newspaper. In a world without rose colored glasses, child support goes unpaid, a college degree guarantees you a job working at McDonalds and your best friend is sleeping with your wife. "The Book of Bitterness brings you tales from the front: unflinching accounts of a world that doesn't work. If any of this seems just a bit too familiar, it should. There is bitteress in all of us. You can choose to ignore it. You can bury it so deep that it will never see the light of day. But it's there. "The authors you will meet on these pages have chosen to acknowledge that bitterness. To use it as a source of energy: a fire within that will propel them into an uncertain future with the confidence that only those who expect the worst will ever understand." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 14:14:40 -0500 (EST) From: Michael Mitchell Subject: RE: OV: The fight against V-Day > Any to add...? All of the songs feature a shimmery, acoustic guitar-based sound and vague but attractive melodies; "End of Some Fear" comes close to rocking but never quite gets there, and everything else is slow, limpid and regretful. Peter Walsh's voice is nice but unremarkable, and the lyrics seem to exist mostly to serve the songs' mood, not vice versa - -- frankly, you're not going to put this disc on to listen to the songs at all; you're going to put it on because you're in a particular mood. That said, there are some lyrics that will take you by surprise: lines like "You'll become my big excuse/The poison that I drink as I sink my teeth in you" are rather startling, particularly when sung in front of a sobbing steel guitar backdrop. There's nothing the matter with mood albums, anyway, and this really is a fine one. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide " - ----Original Message Follows---- From: SngWrite1@aol.com To: oppositeview@smoe.org Subject: OV: Great miserable albums Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 14:17:08 EST I'm quite partial to an under appreciated gem by The Apartments called A Life Full Of Farewells. But many people might not be aware of the availability of 2 other albums by Josh. Both "Beautiful Nowhere" and "Felt Like Making A Live Record" are available from CDbaby.com. The former album contains songs Josh wrote after leaving School of Fish but before the "Inarticulate Nature Boy" album. The latter is a live record from his solo show when he opened for Tori Amos. And they're cheap too ($10 each). I've been listening to "Spirit Touches Ground" today, and it's really really good, and makes you sad that he's gone, happy for the songs he left, and angry at the fact that he never got to see this record released because of short sighted record company weasels. Kudos to the fans & his friends in the industry who eventually found a home for it. As for me, one of my favorite songs he wrote came on the first School Of Fish record - the song Euphoria. "Don't you know that a heart can only break so many times/So why do you feel the need to see what you can do to mine?/You can come back again and again/But you can't, no you can't, no you just can't hurt me anymore/'Cause I'm in euphoria" Dave ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 22:51:30 -0600 From: Leah D Schenkenberg Subject: Re: OV: The fight against V-Day a few more to add from some favorite bands alreayd mentioned: the winner takes it all - ABBA King of Pain - Police Echo Valley 26809 - Partridge Family (this is a great one!!!)
