It's interesting because this entire subject has been going on at the Patty Griffin mailing list this week! Someone turned up an advance copy of the new album. (he is since holding a listening party at his house this weekend in Pittsburgh!) For those who don't know, Patty is a former A&M alum, that got pushed over to Interscope. She recorded a new album almost 2 years ago, and then the record company kept pushing it back, pushing it back, then finally said "don't like it." and dropped her from the label. Keeping the album in their vault. A fate that the Dels have managed to keep from happening. Patty is now on ATO Records, Dave Matthews own label, with a NEW new album is coming out in March. So, everyone's debating the legal ramifications, the moral ramifications versus the need to hear the music. The emotional always loses out. Promos come out of the artists' pockets. So, buying them on eBay, 2nd hand stores, or from other fans, does the band absolutely no good. And, as the cd's themselves say, Promo Only - Not For Sale. I don't pretend that the sale of promos will cease, but I expect everyone who buys one, to seek out the released version as well. (or if you didn't like the album as a promo, send it to me!!!! *grin*) Now is the time to call radio stations. Now is the time to make inquiries at record stores. Now is the time to save your pennies. Now is the time to put this subject to bed. So, the bottom line always comes back to buy buy buy the consumer releases. Her album 'Long Shot Novena' is due for release on 18th February in the US, and 25th in the UK/Europe. The label is Rough Trade/Sanctuary. She will be appearing at the Borderline on Friday 1st March, with usual band plus Iain and Mark (and Kris?). On Thursday, March 7th, she will be at the Cherry Jam Club, Porchester Road without the Dels, as "The Dels are, at long last, on the move in March". Whether that means "on the move touring" or "on the move rehearsing" or "on the move on the publicity rounds" I don't know. But it sounds hopeful. Cheers, Hilary PS a plug for the Eileen Rose list - to subscribe either email Eileen_Rose_list-subscribe@yahoogroups.co.uk or go to http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/Eileen_Rose_list/. If a label doesn't want to support an artist, release them. If they don't want to release the material that remains unrecorded, let go of that, too. It's not so much because I - as a fan - want to hear the material. It's an ownership issue that was raised in the Napster dispute. As an artist, I create a painitng. As an artist, do I give up ownership once the painting is complete? No, I don't and I don't think that songwriters should have to either. A record company may pay a band/artist money to write or record songs, but that should not constitute "partnership" or even "co-ownership" because the artist/band provides a return on the record company's investment by allowing them a take of the return from sales/touring/merchandising etc. Of course, this is general and oversimplified, but it seems to me that they make enough money with albums sold, tours, merchandising and the like. Let the artists take with them work that is finished but unreleased so that we the public may hear it one day, and so that the arist/band can capitalize on what is rightfully theirs. That way, the artist or band has recourse if they would like to take action should something shady take place - as was percieved in the Napster dispute with promotion vs. losses not only in relation to the record companies who made the most noise, but the artists as well. >> "So, the bottom line always comes back to buy buy buy the consumer releases."<< I agree 100%. As with most of the bands I've taken liking too, I'll buy copies of CD's from all over the world if for no other reason than cover art or bragging rights! As a teenager, I always bought different versions of 7 or 12 inch singles and picture discs because b-sides and cover art were always different! In my case, the only thing different is the pitiful state of the Canadian dollar - it's not worth a lot right now, and that is a whole other arguement! As for media copies, having a media play copy would not deter me from buying the real thing. Granted, I believe that the person who posted the disc for sale on E-Bay should have waited until the album was out . . but sometimes those media copies have clips of interviews etc. making them highly collectable. But alas, the record companies have found a way around this too, releasing "Interview Discs" for sale in record stores. This is a new one to me . . . have they done this for a while? And why the Dixie Chicks? An interesting bunch of women, but couldn't they have released Mick Jagger's unabridged version of what really happened between him and Bowie in the 70's? I think with that I've said enough. Kevin Cawthorne Webmaster - The Official Del Amitri Website UK http://www.delamitri.co.uk - ------------------------------------------------------ This message and any attachment has been virus checked - ------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Feb 2002 18:26:58 EST From: SngWrite1@aol.com Subject: OV: Promo-larry-curly I will buy the actual retail version of the CD even if I come to own a promo before that, but like I said - unless there is going to be a difference in track listing between the UK & US versions I'm only buying one. And if they don't announce a US release date by the time the UK version is out, I'll be buying the UK version. Let's talk about the source of these promos too. When I worked at a record store I knew people who would take promos down the street to sell at a store that bought used CD's. Music critics are always unloading the CD's they get sent. And people who work in radio also have promo blood on their hands. But here's something else. You can't stop the flow. If you don't send out a promo to a record store you eliminate the possibility that they will play it on the overhead system and make people aware that an album IS coming out (for those who don't read ICE religiously), build excitement, and allow people to be drawn in by the actual music. If you don't send promos to music journalists way in advance of the release (to deal with lead times) you might not see the review until several months after it's out and if you don't send them one at all then you eliminate the possibility that they will write about it (is someone from Rolling Stone going to go out and BUY an album just to review it?). And radio can't play what they don't have. The record companies (and the artists) know that many of these promos will be sold, but if you're a big label you can't care about being selective as to who gets them. You pour 'em out there and hopefully a few of them will serve their purpose, which is to promote the fact that an artist is releasing a new CD. What the Dels need to do is pin down the US label (whoever it may be) to eithe r release the record or release the rights to the band in the US. Then they could shop for a new deal over here (which would probably mean the new company licensing the album from Mercury UK). ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Feb 2002 23:30:25 -0000 From: "Jane Armstrong" Subject: OV: Re: New Del Amitri Logo released! Hmmm interesting. I this logo is very similar to that used on the US promo released in 1998 of Driving With The Brakes on. Though it had the Del written horizontally and the Amitri was sideways on. Got it somewhere - just can't lay my hands on it at the moment. I rather liked the scribble they used for HoR. I wish they'd decide on a logo and stay with it. Give the band some sort of "corporate identity". Jane ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Feb 2002 22:17:31 -0600 From: Leah D Schenkenberg Subject: Re: OV: New Del Amitri Logo released!
