His career hit The Skids a long time ago though, didn't it? :>) Personally, I far preferred The Skids, Dunfermline's finest, came in on the punk/new wave era but were always that bit different. They were still making great music which Adamson left for Big Country who were unique in their sound and kept rock going in a period when it was in a dearth post-punk so respect to him for that. I loved the debut album but thought they just became a parody of themselves afterwards. It also resulted in Skids lead singer Richard Jobson becoming the smug reviewer on Sky movies so he's got a lot to answer for!! . I met Adamson once after a Skids gig at Cardiff Top Rank about 20 years ago - - it was on a Sunday night and because they were still playing after hours, Top Rank switched off the p.a. which resulted in Skids carrying on by singing acapella versions of Into The Valley and I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside. I'd like to tell you what Adamson said to me but although I'm a fellow celt, I didn't have a ****ing clue trying to understand his accent. He's gone missing several times in recent years and it somehow seemed inevitable his life would end in this fashion. Still, only 43 - jeez. Mind you, having met a few of my old schoolmates last weekend, we could name a dozen or more pals who won't get to see 40!! ********************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. He's just a really funny, very talented guy. However, I have his prior release (_Inside Wants Out_) and it's a very sparse, acoustic album for the most part. The production on the new record jars me a bit. I haven't bought it yet cos I'm still a bit hesitant. The songwriting is brillian, I just don't care for some of the instrumentation. There are NO Del Amitri singles in any record store (at least none of the three on Argyle) and very few CDs period. Why is it that I saw more of their CDs in the London Tower Records store? Speaking of which...I can just kick myself! I've been wanting, and trying desparately to find, some Garrett Wall CDs and I saw them before my meet up with Andrew and Jane, but did I buy them? No. DOH!! Here I am thinking I'd find them here in the shops in Glasgow. I know I'd hit the jackpot here when I was over in 1996. It looks like if it's not on the charts at the moment, they just can't be bothered to stock them here. So, do I leave Glasgow early just to get to Picadilly and get the CDs knowing I've no place to lay my head that night (won't have time before my flight the next day at 9:45am)? I just don't know if I can handle staying up all night in London (I've just about spent all my budget, so a hotel's out of the question.) Hmm...will they let me check my luggage early and just hang out at the airport all night? Ok, I'm done thinking out loud. I don't have a CD player on me, but I do have one back at the hotel and the CD I last played is a Wonder Stuff CD (five songs) that I got at the show the other night for a fiver. I brought with me 2 compilation CDs I burned at home. They're mostly Del Amitri rare stuff, live stuff, but one also has another fave, Pete Palladino. If you haven't heard of him, I'd suggest going right over to www.petepalladino.com and having a listen. He lists Del Amitri as one of his favorites. I knew I liked him! And I didn't even put two and two together 'til he reminded me that they were once on the same label, A&M. (He used to be in a band called The Badlees...I'd give them a listen, too, if I were you.) Excuse my Welsh. When I get fed up of Mike's songs and see him performing live, I know my life's not worth having. Sounds stupid I know but he puts you on such a high. Don't ask me to name the set list but all the Alarm songs we know and love were there (most of the singles plus a couple of album classics). Other than that, he performed High on the Hill, Regeneration and finished with a blistering version of the SexPistols' Pretty Vacant complete with Kirk Brandon and Pete Wylie blasting away with him (as Mike said, "they're not supporting me, they're my best mates). Spear of Destiny with Kirk were superb, did about an hour. Kirk was very animated and up for it tonight. Last time, I saw him, he was in a wheelchair - - it's a miracle! Mike and Pete kicking in with his final song, Westworld. Pete did 5 or 6 songs, 3 or 4 acoustic - starting with Story of the Blues, and finishing with 2 electric songs - Come Back and It's Sinful with Pete and Mike joining in. He dedicated "Heart as big as Liverpool" - a great song about your feelings more than the place - to Stu and George Harrison. Mike was so good tonight, it's hard to put into words. He was more like a 20 yr old, never stopped bouncing, jumping and forcing the crowd into action and, by halfway, we were going mental. He was so manic that he must have knocked his mic off and over in every one of the first 6 songs. Fantastic energy that you can only admire, he enjoyed it as much as, if not more than, anybody in the crowd. If you ever get the chance to see him, you have to. I have to laugh how he's labelled the godfather of Welsh rock when he's got 50 times as much energy and personna as Kelly Jones of Stereophonics. I felt priviledged to be there - Mike, Jez, Rich, Steve - Pete, Kirk and crew, I salute you all. Thanks for the entertainment. Loads of dedications to Stuart Adamson and one or two to George Harrison too. Mike went to lengths to describe how Stu was a top mate and always signed his autographs "wirth respect". Genuine and heartfelt. I just wanted to say "thanks" for the links, and if anyone sees any more tribute sites or more about Stuart Adamson, please e-mail URLs on or off list. His songs are often going through my head, but lately the one that has seemed most appropriate to me has been "The Storm," with its message of grim resolve in a time of war. The key is that no one feels good about it, they are just doing what needs to be done and wish things could be different. He was probably the first real musical hero that I had. There were others that I liked, but his songs really helped change the way I looked at music forever. And that is a great and fine thing. Well since the word "Holidays" has a different meaning over on this side of the Big Pond ("Happy Holidays" would imply that you're wishing someone a good summer vacation), I would plump for "We're All Going on a Summer Holiday" by Cliff Richard. But if we're talking about Christmas songs, I'd quite like to hear them singing the wonderfully cynical "I Believe in Father Christmas" by Greg Lake. However Justin publicly announced at a gig in Poole - Greg's home town - that "Greg Lake's a pr**k", so I somehow doubt they'd ever chose to cover that particular number! Or we could have Iain doing an impression of Shane McGowan and sing "Fairytale of New York" - I'll volunteer to sing the Kirsty McColl bit, since she's no longer around to do it, alas. (Thought I'm not sure I COULD call Iain a Scumbag or a Maggot) Jane ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V3 #317 **********************************
