[Aleksandr Subject: OV: In the CD player (no Dels content) My fav thread also... 1- The Anniversary/Superdrag, a 6 song split EP...3 songs each band. Superdrag is really great and the Anniversary are pumping an early release for their new album in February. I can't wait! 2- Lit- Atomic...the new disc...catchy power pop. 3- Handsome Devil- Love and Kisses from the Underground...more power pop, riding Lit's sub label, Dirty Martini. 4- Jellyfish- Bellybutton...I know this is 12 years old but hey, it's Jellyfish! 5-The Mayfield Four- Second Skin...2nd major release for this rock band. 6- Sponge- Wax Ecstatic...seen them in concert last week, so I've been listening to all their CDs...they are one of my favorite bands...SWEET! I don't have any Del in...I save them for the weekends that I'm drinking ;) Phil ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2001 12:59:17 -0000 From: "Jane Armstrong" Subject: OV: Re: In the CD player (no Dels content) Phil Denson wrote: > 1- The Anniversary/Superdrag, > 2- Lit- Atomic... > 3- Handsome Devil- > 4- Jellyfish- > 5-The Mayfield Four- > 6- Sponge- Wax Ecstatic... Our local radio station here in Philadelphia (WXPN-FM, home of the World Cafe) every year asks their listeners to send in a top five of the year and then they compile a list of the top 50 albums of the year, which they play in their entirety during the last few days of the year, leading up to #1 on New Year's Eve. Here's my top five, I'd be interested in seeing anyone else's that wants to post. 1. John Mayer - Room For Squares. If you haven't heard this - seek it out. He's a new, young, singer/songwriter/guitarist. This is his first major label recording, mostly recorded independently; there was an original version released on Aware, then it was "sweetened" and rereleased by Sony with an extra track (it sounded great to start with). He has developed a fanatical grassroots following mostly of kids who are college & high school age (it felt a little weird being just about the oldest person at his show). The amazing part is that he displays none of the affects that you usually see in that age group - no crazy dyed or dirty hair, no piercings, no baggy pants, no tattoos, etc. What he does offer is excellent songwriting, singing, and he can play guitar like Stevie Ray or Hendrix when he wants to (you might find his cd packaged with a bonus disc with a very cool live track). Sony put an exceptionally low price on this, to help attract an audience - I've seen it on sale at Circuit City for as low as $6.99 (USD). 2. Brian Auger's Oblivion Express - Voices of Other Times. This came out of nowhere and can hold it's own with anything out there today. As a long time Auger fan, I can say that the Oblivion Express has never sounded better. This verison of the group includes his kids - I think his son plays drums and his daughter does an excellent job with the vocals. If you ever enjoyed Happiness is Just Around the Bend, you will be thrilled with this, as I was and am. 3. Chris Botti - Night Sessions. You may know this trumpet player from his work in Sting's band. He has four excellent albums, and this latest one might be his best. There is one song with guest vocals by Shawn Colvin, it is otherwise instrumental. I got to see him play this material live last summer with a crackerjack band and it was all that. 4. Kasey Chambers - Barricades & Brickwalls. Second album from this Australian youngster. Amazing production by her brother, her dad plays guitar and her mom handles the merchandising. You might have heard her song "The Captain" from her first album of the same name, a song that was used to maximum value on one episode of the Sopranos last season. You need to like or at least be sympathetic to country music or country rock to enjoy this. A solid second effort with amazing sound quality. 5. Johnny A - Sometime Tuesday Morning. A superlative instrumental electric guitar record from a talented player from the Boston area. The same radio station who solicits these top fives got onto this disc this year and turned all their listeners on to it - it's quality stuff. Unlike some years, this year's top five was easy to pick; however I also liked Jessica Andrews-Who I Am, Gretchen Peters-Secret of Life, Chris Rea-King of the Beach, Texas-Greatest Hits, Eddi Reader-Simple Soul, Eddi Reader-Live, St. Germain-Tourist, Joe Sample-The Song Lives On, Shawn Colvin-Whole New You, Lucinda Williams-Essence, and although it won't be out until 2002 sometime, Julia Fordham-Concrete Love, this new one competes with her first two albums for the distinction of being her best ever. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2001 09:08:01 -0500 From: "B M" Subject: Re: OV: What's in your CD player right now? Check out the song "Duty Free". Johnny Cash: Essential Johnny Cash 1955-83 - What can I say about the Man in Black. Wish I had a chance to see him. John Mayer : Room For Squares - Great song writer/storyteller. Pete Yorn : Musicforthemorningafter - If you have not heard this CD yet, buy yourself an early x-mas gift, you won't be disappointed. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2001 16:12:40 -0000 From: Hopping James W Subject: OV: RE: Top Five of 2001 I'll be honest and say that I really don't think that I could pick 5 because I think it has been a pretty poor year for Album releases in general. Sad day..... Big Country star found dead December 17, 2001 Posted: 9:54 AM EST (1454 GMT) LONDON, England -- Stuart Adamson, lead singer of 1980s pop group Big Country, has been found dead in Hawaii, according to his manager. Ian Grant confirmed the body of the 43-year-old was discovered in a hotel on Sunday. Grant said: "He was a great guy and I know there will be a lot of people will feel the same way." Adamson, who had been living in Nashville, Tennessee, went missing several weeks ago. He had fought a long battle with alcohol and also went missing in November 1999. A statement on the Web site of Grant's record label, Track Records, said: "I cannot believe I am sitting at my desk typing this. "Stuart Adamson was found dead in a hotel room in Hawaii yesterday. "I have no more news other than that at present. I ask the media to leave his family alone in their grief. My heart goes out to his family, Bruce, Mark and Tony." The statement added: "I have just lost one of the finest people I have ever worked with or been lucky enough to know." Nervous breakdown Big Country split last year and Adamson went on to form another group, The Raphaels. He had lived in Nashville for the past five years and was married. Adamson, born in Manchester, grew up in Crossgates near Dunfermline, Fife, and formed the punk group The Skids in the 1970s. He went on to form Big Country, which had a string of hits during the 1980s as well as eight successful albums. In 1986, he told how he had suffered a nervous breakdown six years before and was on the verge of another due to stress and overwork. When he went missing for the second time in two years earlier this month, his ex-wife Sandra, from Dunfermline, confirmed Adamson was due to appear in court in the U.S. charged with drink driving. She said the case had been deferred until March next year. Grant first met Adamson in 1977 and managed him throughout his career, from his beginnings in The Skids to critical acclaim with Big Country. He said: "He was a man that I had a lot of respect for. "You don't stay with someone in this business for that length of time unless that is the case. "At the moment someone close to me has died and I feel like I am in some kind of void. "He was a great guy and I know there will be a lot of people will feel the same way. Everybody who met Stuart liked him." Speaking before Adamson's death was announced, Richard Jobson, co-founder and vocalist in Skids, said: "My feelings for Stuart are as strong as ever they were. We had great times together. "He was always the rock that made the Skids a credible and imaginative force. He was pasionate and obstinate and an inspiring good friend." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 09:29:09 +1100 (EST) From: Aleksandr Subject: Re: OV: What's in your CD player right now? Just to chip in - the five CDs that are most withing reach right now... in no particular order... The Rainy Season - Marc Cohn From the guy who gave us "Walking in Memphis" back in 1990, this was his second album and was every bit as good as his first. His albums have a consistent shape to them and the track order is very important (this ties into a discussion ages ago about track order). Again Track 11 is a blinder. Barricades & Brickwalls - Kasey Chambers Second Album from our newest star. Loved the first album, seen her live lots, she's taken the roof off everytime. Little girl voice, unassuming manner. Love this girl, amazed by the talent in the family. Love 'em, love 'em, love 'em. One Left Shoe - Steve Poltz. Found this little gem in a friends CD collection after she met him at a gig. According to her he's a drunk and a sleaze, but he's pretty damn funny, and knows how to write a good song. Forever Blue - Chris Isaak. this one is never very far from the top of the pile. Excellent album, filled with some very good songs. Widely known as "the perfect soundtrack for lost love". The Chillout Sessions 2 - Ministry of Sound Not a huge fan of techno and dance music, but this compilation of "blissful beats & chilled out house" appealed to me, and it's something nice to put on while you're a-writin' Cheers, Aleksandr in Sunny Sydney :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2001 18:33:16 EST From: Wonderwoman681@aol.com Subject: Re: OV: RE: Spinning on my CD 'turntable' I don't have a changer but I have my "pile next to" selection here: I tend to get in a rut every two months or so 1)The big chill soundtrack 2) Sting - ten summoners tales 3) Semisonic - Feeling strangly fine 4) The police - The classics 5) Sinead O'Connor - Faith & courage 6) Del Amitri - Hatful of rain (there is always a mandatory dels selction) 7) Collective soul - Dosage ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2001 18:06:17 -0800 From: Darren Holmquist Subject: OV: RE: Spinning on my CD 'turntable' Lots of road trips lately, so it's been a lot of stuff in the car.... 1) Beatles Anthology vols. 1, 2, & 3 2) Del Amitri: History 3) The Superficials - Old School 4) George Harrison - All Things Must Pass 5) Catie Curtis - My Shirt Looks Good On You 6) Kevin Gilbert - The Shaming Of The True 7) And We All Sing Along Like Before - Tribute To Del Amitri By Their Fans Mostly been listening to stuff I know very well already. Catie Curtis is about as far into Country as I can get! And, about every month or so I put in The Shaming Of The True, and can't get it to leave for about 2 weeks. Quickly becoming one of my favorite car cd's. Others have reminded me of discs I need to pull off the shelf.... Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend; Jellyfish - Bellybutton; and I'm happy that other folks are discovering Train. Their DVD is out Tuesday (?). His career hit The Skids a long time ago though, didn't it? :>) Personally, I far preferred The Skids, Dunfermline's finest, came in on the punk/new wave era but were always that bit different. They were still making great music which Adamson left for Big Country who were unique in their sound and kept rock going in a period when it was in a dearth post-punk so respect to him for that. I loved the debut album but thought they just became a parody of themselves afterwards. It also resulted in Skids lead singer Richard Jobson becoming the smug reviewer on Sky movies so he's got a lot to answer for!! . I met Adamson once after a Skids gig at Cardiff Top Rank about 20 years ago - it was on a Sunday night and because they were still playing after hours, Top Rank switched off the p.a. which resulted in Skids carrying on by singing acapella versions of Into The Valley and I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside. I'd like to tell you what Adamson said to me but although I'm a fellow celt, I didn't have a ****ing clue trying to understand his accent. He's gone missing several times in recent years and it somehow seemed inevitable his life would end in this fashion. Still, only 43 - jeez. Mind you, having met a few of my old schoolmates last weekend, we could name a dozen or more pals who won't get to see 40!! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 08:40:41 +0100 From: Dirk.Wonhoefer@eberle-augsburg.de Subject: OV: Spinning on my CD 'turntable' In my CD-changer I find: 1.
