Roll To Me, Always The Last To Know and When You Were Young seem to be the ones that crop up occasionally on the radio at the moment, I can't remember hearing NEH or KTTG on there for ages. But I do listen to a very local radio station (for local people) so I can't tell you if this is representative of everywhere else. Actually, I do think that maybe Roll To Me maybe a better one to pick - taken in the context of "what is a good single" then it's the perfect pop song. It may be my least favourite single release, but it's one the general public know in the UK, it's a more upbeat than NEH and it's a bit more recent. My local station seem to have it on their 'filler' list as they always play it in the short gap they have between the traffic bulletins and the news. If pre-release public awareness is what you're after, then this would have my vote. Of course, if we can't decide we could always vote more than once using different email aliases. :o) Hilary - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane Armstrong" To: "Dels" Sent: 15 December 2001 09:55 Subject: OV: Virgin Top 500 Vote Virgin Radio are asking listeners to vote for the Top 500 singles of all time (again.....) We need to do this every couple of months because like good underwear, you just get too many favorites after awhile! So my 5: World Party/Goodbye Jumbo - Kind of randomly grabbed this oldie and forgot how good it was. Always good to spring new things on the Brit, reminds Leigh of Traveling Wilburys. Third Eye Blind/Third Eye Blind - If you don't have this CD why not? It's place in music history becomes more obvious every day, and it has like 5 number one US singles. Oasis/What's The Story... - Yeah yeah I have 2 Oasis CDs the other is the B-sides collection, always curious about idiot savants. Reminds Leigh of home hehe. REM/Reveal - Maybe their best ever, wonderful. Melissa Etheridge/Skin - Her recent semi-autobiographical "I got lesbian dumped" CD. I like it more and more with every listen, very nice. Melissa has one of those funny live/studio dichotomys. She completely kicks ass live and is one of the most energetic performers I've ever seen, but this CD is a lot of acoustic introspection. My 5 Ryan Adams/Heartbreaker - only because I've lent Gold to somebody. He's become a bit of a darling in the music world but he still "rocks". Liked him since Whiskeytown so I'm not just following the crowd!;) Massive Attack/Mezzanine - flippin' brill. Got it out tonight to listen to Teardrop. Bottle of red wine and it's all you need for a nice night in with a chick! Elliot Smith/XO - watched "Keeping the Faith" the other night and "pitseleh" was in the soundtrack. U2/All That You Can't Leave Behind - This truelly is a magnificent album, although there are a couple of dodgy songs on it. I find it really spiritual and helps me get in touch with God (something I don't do very often!). Love "Peace on Earth". Gemma Hayes/4am EP- Have this in my car at the moment. Since I now have a burner, I've been listening to compilation CD's I've made: 1. Still Lousy With Love - Del Amitri: These are a bunch of my favorite b-sides that got left off of the official release. How could you not have "Evidence" or "Learn To Cry" - it's criminal! This fixes that! Of course, I also went through and made a "bonus" disc for each album with all the b-sides from it (except live tracks or remixes). 2. Besides, I've Got You Covered - Lloyd Cole: A collection of Lloyd Cole b-sides and covers. His version of Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat" is quite excellent. 3. Steal My Records - Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown: I won't call Ryan Adams a genius because he does feel it necessary to put EVERY SONG HE WRITES on an album (c'mon man, they're not ALL great!) instead of just giving us the best of the batch. So I picked my faves from Whiskeytown and his solo albums. Come Pick Me Up, is the lead off track - best chorus of any song I've heard in a while - the ultimate ode to a destructive relationship. 4. For No One - Tom Waits: If you don't own at least one Tom Waits album, you are fucking up. I will actually use the word genius to describe him, because he is. 5. Sometimes Nothing - Dave Sills: I never listen to my own stuff once it's recorded, but I'm checking the master before it gets sent off for replication. OK Mine are pretty varied actually. In my car I have the following: 1. Train - Drops of Jupiter. Bought this months ago from the US, and couldn't be bothered to fight with that stupid cellophane packaging you have over there, so didn't listen to it until recently. But it's a brilliant CD, recommended to my by people of excellent taste - OV'ers. They are finally starting to break through over here (as is the Dave Matthews Band) 2. Starsailor - Love Is Here. Love it. Great voice that guy has. 3. Travis - The Invisible Band. This has been in the car for months. I particularly love Flowers in The Window. And Dougie Payne is so cute. (And I'm old enough to be his Mum!) 4. Del Amitri - Twisted. Found it's way back into the car after months of not listening to the Dels. I think you're probably all pretty familiar with this one. 5. Eileen Rose - Shine Like It Does - been in my car since I bought it in February 6. The Devlins - Consent. Their latest release. Love this album - very moody. At home I am also listening to: 1. The Set Remains The Same - John Otway (www.otnews.net - we are trying to get him a second Hit record for his 50th birthday - 25 years after his first Hit. We're all going to Abbey Road in March to record backing vocals on his next single - around 900 of us, and they are doing a TV documentary following the War Cabinet, of which I am a member, during the year leading up to the second Hit) 2. Live - The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - another Glaswegian. Sadly, he died too young :-( But what a showman. Very loud, very heavy at times - and very Scottish!! (And you can hear my old flame Graham shouting out in the middle of it) 3. Greatest Hits (or something) - JJ Cale. So laid back, he's almost horizontal. But great late night stuff 4. The Sweeney - Self-titled. Members of John Otway's backing band lead by the lovely Murray Torkidsen. Good old British pub rock. 5. Fledgling - Fledgling was Eileen Rose's old band. This album really rocks! Pretty rare to find these days. 6. ... And We All Sing Along Like Before - The OV Tribute Disc. This arrived this morning and I've already played it twice. And on my PC DVD player as I write I've got the Old Grey Whistle Test DVD - four hours of nostaliga featuring artists like John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett, Lynyrd Skynrd, Alex Harvey, John Martyn, Tom Waits, Elton John, Rory Gallagher, Focus, Little Feat, Dr Feelgood (the originals with Wilco Johnson and Lee Brilleaux - not the lot who are currently touring, great though they are), early U2, Iggy Pop, The Ramones, The Damed, very early REM, XTC, Blondie,Talking Heads, The Police and loads more. A vertiable stroll down Memory Lane, with me preferring Disc 1 - the 70's (I get to play air guitar to Freebird!) and Eddie favours Disc 2 - the 80's, him being a mere slip of a lad. Brilliant! For No One - Tom Waits: If you don't own at least one Tom Waits > >album, you are fucking up. I will actually use the word genius to > >describe him, because he is. He is. The only Tom Waits album I own that I'm not incredibly fond of (the only one I don't own being, aside from various best of's, is _The Black Rider_) is _Foreign Affairs,_ and that's only cos I think he'd hit the end of his creative cycle for that style he was working. Because of course right after he put out the fucking brilliant and insanely essential _Swordfishtrombones._ But man, give me _Bone Machine_ to match against anyone to beat them down into the ground and say: This is American songcraft at its finest. As for my records, after that brief diatribe...:) 1. Jay Farrar - _Sebastopol_ : Front man for Son Volt (and Uncle Tupelo, of course) finally steps out and makes another fantastic record. Gillian Welch does backup vocals on a song, Superchunk's drummer plays on six tracks, and friggin' Stephen Drozd from the Flaming Lips does a lot of touches on five songs and it's awesome. Definitely I'd recommend it. 2. The Roots - _Things Fall Apart_ : The silently laid masterpiece of this hardworking, highly original Philadelphia hip-hop quintet. Great lyrics (my current favourite line: "I've got a doctorate/in cold rockin' it.." *laugh*), original and great production, and how many other hip-hop bands have their own drum/stand-up bass/guitar ensemble to lay that shit down live? This is the kind of album that could turn peoples' ideas of rap music around. But sadly, just like all the other albums like it, critical acclaim does little to assuage. 3. Fountains of Wayne - self titled : One of the best pop records ever. Period. Don't question it. If you've never heard it, do yourself a favour and take a listen. The lyrics are witty and glazingly simple and beautiful. The way rock was meant to roll. 4. The Mercy Bell - 9 Song Demos : An Australian band I saw open for Josh Rouse at the Borderline in London in October. They were super nice and when I told them I a) dug their stuff and b) worked for an American college radio station with a big bandwidth, they sent me free cds. ;) Hard to describe, but an amazing lead vocalist and lovely bass touches and just..really ethereal stuff. Think, Bjork just more grounded in sound (less electronics, more traditional instruments) and more Australian in inflection. :) 5. Ben Folds - _Rockin' the Suburbs_ : Sheesh. Okay. I now realise why I love Ben Folds. He reminds me of Randy Newman, whom I also love very much. They're both incisively sarcastic and write great ballads and vignettes and piano pop. Ben Folds really could be the next great pop writer of our time. I can only cross my fingers that he can fulfill on the promise of the three BFF records and this first solo one. The next single, "Still Fighting It," has one of the best chorus hooks I've heard in awhile. josh. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Dec 2001 02:24:05 -0500 From: "Josh Neas" Subject: OV: No Dels Content - A question for Brit OVers. Unfortunately, they appeared in the first series, and whilst there are videos of the complete second and third series and the Last Ever, the first series is only available as a Best of compilation, and I doubt that they will be on that.
