EXCLUSIVE DUMB NEWS: Tiny actress sees band. Whilst some of you may not consider this particularly newsworthy, we do. Sorry. Winona Ryder was in town last night watching ARE Weapons. Cool. Ms. Ryder, who recently dumped Beck because the pair weren't "sexually compatible" (a strange phrase used by women far too often these days) turned up at the band's secret gig at On The Rocks in Shoreditch with another actor whose name escapes us on her arm, and had a damn good time, as did everybody else present. This is because ARE Weapons are the new Earl Brutus, in a good way. The diminutive star of such classics as Heathers and Beetlejuice then trouped over the road to Herbal for the afterparty, where ARE Weapons DJed in a worryingly Poptones-esque manner until everybody was too pissed to stand up, and had forgotten about Winona Ryder. It should also be noted that Ms. Ryder called PlayLouder news Ed. and Weekender scribe Adam Alphabet "cute". But she did add that he needed a shave. He has now promised not to shut up about this, and Gonzales' show at Trash on Monday (July 23rd) until Christmas. Isn't it funny how in real life famous film folks are much smaller? And how short must Christian Slater be? TALK! (http://playlouder.com/talk/30/) Jennifer A. A. It will keep us hungrier for a brilliant album B. As J.Woyan pointed out it will give the label time to market it and not rush the release C. It wil create a buffer between two other scottish bands (Travis and The Proclaimers) who have released new materials only last month, the last thing we would all want is ill-informed reviewers spouting 'Following the comeback trail of The Procolaimers...' which will happen. D. It keeps the touring possiblities for the middle of next year, something to get all the people in the UK through the winter Have a great day and let us continue to wear out the current CD's, we can always play CD's with the random function enabled. Thanks for listening Nick ____________________________ Nicholas Short Project - Coordinator IntraMed - Melbourne ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2001 01:36:28 +0100 From: "Andrew Douglas" Subject: OV: RE: OT...Add this to the Winona Ryder shags musicians column..... I must admit to being a Winona fan, if only she knew that i used to play in a post-pop punk band called "The Petrol Fumes", then i'd surely have her. After ging out with Beck she also went out with the current alt.country hip thang, Ryan Adams (Who incidently records very good stuff). Just after he split up with her I saw him play in Dublin, although I omitted to ask for her number - i felt it would be inappropriate! andrew P.S. if you're a girl and don't like Winona, it's only because you're jealous! Louanne ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2001 08:26:39 +0100 From: "Mike Hancock" Subject: OV: James on Mercury Hi, The UK band James, have just released another album (their second since their 1998 greatest hits album) and I can thoroughly recommend it. The following two extracts from their official site gives us little hope: "05-Jul-01: Due to the band's continuing difficulties releasing albums in the states, US James fans will need to buy 'Pleased To Meet You' on import. To purchase the album online, visit AudioStreet.co.uk. The version listed is the "special edition" with bonus CDROM. All purchases from AudioStreet will count towards the UK charts." and a message board post: "Well what happened? there are still people I know who were watching the band in the 80's that don't know Pleased to Meet You exists. Meanwhile driving through manchester I must have seen a thousand Gorillaz posters and that albums been out for months. So who is to blame?? Well the whole things strikes me as a Mercury Records mistake. I remember back to last year and eagerly awaiting the new Bluetones album on Mercury, now, the bluetones had a famously dodgy record company in Superior Quality but the promotion of the record by Mercury was abysmal, I only knew anything about that album by chancing a glimpse of the bluetones website at a mates. Fast forward to present day and the same things have happened again, where are the posters, where are the tv appearances, nme interviews, and slagging westlife off (it worked for damon albarn didn't it). Maybe i'm being unfair on Mercury and maybe the band are too lazy to bother promoting, but this could finish the band off (on Mercury at least) and I still think they are one of the three most important in britain along with radiohead and blur. So come on whoevers responsible, let the battle commence with the new single. Let no pair of radio listening ears or tv watching eyes not know that the mighty James are releasing a single and have an album out."
