[Hopping James W Subject: OV: Re:brown eyed girl I honestly feel the singing on this track is good. It's not polished, but the two-part vocals have just the right touch. The word I used before was "tender." People kill Justin's voice on the early material, but I don't see what's so bad about it. It's just different. The arrangement is good. The melody is slightly different from the original, but the song still holds its form, especially during the verses (the Sha-la parts are kind of uncomfortable). But the real reason this version works for me is the guitar. This jangly guitar sound that was so characteristic of them early on disappeared by the time Waking Hours came along, but that was the sound that attracted me to Del Amitri way back when. Like the vocals, the guitar line is just different enough to do the original justice and still retain our interest. It's not flashy, it's just right. The solo in the middle reminds me a bit of the one in "I Was Here." I'm starting to get excited about the newest album. It should be pretty interesting being a part of this list when there are actually new songs to talk about! This month's free CD, "Why Don't We Do It In The Road", is, as you might expect - Beatle-themed and loaded with covers of 24 Beatle's tunes. Take a gander at these sometimes very unusual selections... 1.. Ticket to Ride - Echo & The Bunnymen 2.. Why Don't We Do It In The Road - Lowell Folson 3.. Tomorrow Never Knows - 801 (featuring Phil Manzanera/Brian Eno) 4.. Tell Me What You See - Teenage Fanclub 5.. Daytripper - Otis Redding (blistering live version) 6.. Helter Skelter - Siouxie & The Banshees 7.. Anytime At All - Nils Lofgren 8.. Taxman - Junior Parker (...btw - incredible blues version) 9.. Help - The Damned 10.. I'm A Loser - Marianne Faithfull 11.. Don't Let Me Down - Gene 12.. I Wanna Hold Your Hand - Al Green 13.. Girl - Tiny Tim w/Brave Combo (too strange to describe...) 14.. Across The Universe - 10cc 15.. Revolution - Billy Bragg 16.. One After 909 - Laibach 17.. I'll Cry Instead - Joe Cocker (early Joe Cocker) 18.. Within You, Without You - Rainer (beautiful bluesy acoustic guitar) 19.. Yesterday - Chris Farlowe 20.. Here Comes the Sun - Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel (cross between The Who & Boomtown Rats) 21.. She Loves You - Peter Sellers (! - you gotta hear it to believe it...) 22.. Blue Jay Way - Lord Sitar 23.. I Want You (She's So Heavy) - Booker T & The MG's (perfect) 24.. Helter Skelter - Oasis (...c'mon, ya knew they HAD to have Oasis on this...) UNCUT each month offers, along with the usual music/culture magazine fodder, a free CD of always interesting musical choices - from old previously unreleased tracks of fave artists to new stuff from new talents who you end up searching everywhere for their CD after hearing them... And happily, there is always a small piece in the mag telling you about each of the artists featured (which has proven a boon to baby American bands like Olivia Tremor Control, Wheat, 16 Horsepower, etc in breaking the UK). In 50 issues - I have yet to be disappointed by these compilation CD's each month. Worth a look-see. Have a good weekend. Cheers, Jen Jennifer A. I'm looking for an old release - Words of Our Years by Hugh Harris (former paramour of Sinead O'Connor, but it's still a great CD) and they have it, but I cannot remember what experiences y'all have had with actually receiving orders from this online retailer - any input? All help appreciated. Cheers, Jen Jennifer A. Vicky xo ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 08:46:08 +0100 From: "Jane Armstrong" Subject: OV: Single The single was supposed to be released on 6th or 13th August. Now that's only 3 weeks away. Generally, promo singles reach the radio stations 6-8 weeks before they are released. They're played to death to get everyone interested so that when they finally come out everyone rushes out to buy them. Have we heard ANYTHING about the single? No! Looks like an August release date for the single is either the record company living in cloud cuckoo land or they intend to release it without any promotion - so that gets no airplay (like CTBF) and disappears off the face of the earth. We can't allow this to happen. We need to email UK radio stations and tell them that we understood that a new Del Amitri single was due out - and did they know anything about it. They probably won't but it will get them checking anyway - and may stir up some interest. We also need to get everyone on this list, wherever in the world you are, pre-ordering it (when we have details about it) from UK sites, like www.hmv.co.uk - which counts towards chart position. If it does well in the UK then the record company are more likely to spend more promoting it elsewhere. At the same time, we will do the same to ensure that it does well in the US - and in particular, Australia (so please let us know the best local websites to order from). It's about time that they returned Down Under (it's been 11 years afterall). OK - rant over! Being immobile gives you lots of time to think! A few points on all the emails that have gone around over the last few days. Cover versions - All along the watch tower is probably the best, although Travis' version of Hit Me Baby One More Time is also a favourite. Worst ones are probably Dancing in the Moonlight by Toploader, basically because they are rubbish anyway. Radiohead - I was at the 'Homecoming ' gig in Oxford and it was awesome. Probably the best live band on the planet at the moment. Single - Why email record companies? As long as I can get my copy I'll be happy!
