It was actually a New Year's resolution, but procrastination won out for awhile. Then almost posted for St. Patrick's- had 7 1/2 pages of an 8 page rant on the evils of radio but then went out drinking, woke up the next day and decided it was all rubbish ( Lucky for y'all!). Then I was going to post on my birthday but that was last Wednesday. So I guess Monday's a good enough excuse. Just wanted to say Howdy and that I picked up a copy of Eileen Rose' Shine Like It Does. I guess it's the American re-release on Compass/Rough Trade. Iain Kris produced tracks 7, 9 and 11. It's definitely worth getting. I had to beg my local record store for two months but they finally came through for me. If anyone lives in/near Charlotte NC, then go to Mixed Media, located on Commonwealth Ave. Scott, the owner, works days and is your best bet for ordering. Jamison in the evening will just roll his eyes and launch into a really bad rendition of Roll to Me. He's straight out of High Fidelity. We bonded early on over a Gram Parsons tribute but that's about it. He now ribs me unmercifully about being a Dels fan, and I taunt him about the fact that every fr@*king band he tries to sell me sounds like Belle and Sebastian, some only slightly less medicated than others!! I WILL turn him into a DA fan yet- I've even threatened to but him a copy of Change Everything- my favorite so far as it mirrors a particularly angst filled portion of my life.Anyway, back to Eileen. Any album that starts off like Neil Young and ends up like a crusty old blues mama can't be all bad, no?!! And in between I heard hints of everything from early Melissa Etheridge, Mazzy Star, our local Doubting Thomas and our local pint sized blues chanteuse Donna Duncan, Marianne Faithfull, the Stones hooty-hoo backing vocals to Caitlin Cary/ Ryan Adams. And I even was reminded of the Cowardly Lion and Rocky Horror Picture Show in a couple of spots. All of this comes off more as tasteful quotation rather than shameless derivation, thank God. (Something in common with Del Amitri songwriting). She's a bit "breathy" in spots but I think that problem is most likely being remedied in a studio in Kent as we speak! I can't wait to get the EP when it comes out. Definitely put this one on your wish list. Oh yeah, I saw Bob Dylan over the weekend. No twirling dentures in sight, but he did have this weird Bozo the Clown meets Welcome Back Kotter hair thing going on! GREAT show; sucky, almost torturously so, venue. Center City Fest: lots of really cool bands crammed into way too little space with way too many tickets sold. If you bought one beer and then also stood in line for the portajohn, you missed the whole show. Not a place for claustrophobics or people who can't walk up 20 degree gravel inclines when they're drunk. Ugly, ugly scene. Luckily, I'm a professional. I have this horror that Del Amitri will be booked to play it next year- it's always the last weekend in April and could fall into that US spring tour window. If any OV'ers go, I think we should be prepared and huddle down front with our plaid catheter bags and a keg of Irn Bru disguised as a member of the next band's gig bag!!! The one person who I stopped to ask directions through the maze turned out to have a Scottish accent was in one of the bands- don't know which one. Not wanting to have to change my name to Mrs. Robinson, I didn't push into the flirtation thing-he kind of had that deer in the headlights look. All you "old married ladies" have it easy. Try being our age but (not exactly ) looking and definitely not acting it. I'm constantly forgetting how old I am and it regularly gets me into trouble. I think I've become those people I used to make fun of. All I need is an orange Corvette, lots of drippy gold chains and a pool in need of maintenance. And lots of money. Oh well. I'll sign off before I get to the seven page mark- enough about me what about you? Remember folks-Practice Random Word Processing and Senseless Acts of del Amitri!!!! Bye for now, Rosemary PS Susan- Are you going to the Otto's annual opening/reception/gala/whingding thing in Ellijay next weekend? My buddy Jeff Hull is one of the featured artists and I'll probably ride down to do the muse thing. Hope I'll see you there!! Twisted is, in my opinion, the best album. Dark and moody and with one of the best collections of songs on an album any where (although Girlfriend by Matthew Sweet is also right up there). I'd pick up change everything before you go for Del Amitri, and I think most people would agree. Many think Change Everything is their best album; I'm inclined to think so as well. It's the only one that you can listen to beginning to end without reaching for that skip button...
