The Wag Club, famous as a mod haven during the 60s, and still a renowned live venue, will shut its doors for a final time on May 5 and be replaced by an Irish theme-pub. The O'Neill's chain, owned by brewing giant Bass, has bought the venue. O'Neill's, which already owns the ground floor of the Wag intends to redevelop the first and second floors, turning them into what a spokesperson described as "late-night club". Other details of the development and the possibilty of it remaining a live venue are being withheld "subject to completion of sale confirmation," the spokesperson added. Meanwhile, the Electric Ballroom, host recently to acts like At The Drive-In and Grandaddy, is preparing for a legal scrap to prevent London Underground from shutting it. LU wants to obtain a compulsory purchase order so they can get the Ballroom site and build a number of flats, shops and offices around Camden Tube station. "We have known for around a year," a spokesperson told NME.COM, "but recently it moved up another gear. We are preparing for a long legal battle to fight the move." He also said that the Ballroom's legal team felt it unlikely that LU would obtain a court-ordered compulsory purchase order, as their redevelopment was for mostly commercial reasons. On May 10, Camden Council will publish an interim report on the proposed redevelopment, which also takes in a number of nearby shops and busineses, providing the Ballroom owners a clearer indication of the battle they face. ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V3 #106 **********************************
