If you think Paris is "soulless", try coming to Bristol, Connecticut for a little while. I find Paris wonderful, but your comments about finding beauty wherever you are were right on the mark. I had Del Amitri's debut album from 1985 on shuffle with some other CDs last night, and was once again struck by how great it is. Yes, the lyrics are a little quirky. Yes, Justin's singing has improved since then. But these songs just leap out and grab me by the throat every time. The production is perfect, and the guitar arrangements are awe-inspiring. I've never heard anything quite like that album. It is, by far, the #1 album that I recommend or buy for others, and everyone has always loved it. I invite those who have written this one off to listen again. Chuck ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 15:38:59 -0500 From: "Susan & C. I'm fascinated with your perception of Paris, Leah ~ seems I'm going to be there for several days in June with my friend Ann, about 5 other artists and my mentor who has decided to try organizing a painting trip. He's been at least 5 times so he knows his way around, and I can't think of any better way to see France for the first time than with my mentor serving as Fearless Leader and my buddy of 20-odd years as a roommate. We'll be in Paris for 3 days, then head south to some unpronounceable place for 8 days of daily painting, sightseeing & such. Sounds good, don't it?! > Everyone I was there with was so enthralled with everything, and I remember > sitting in the parks and walking through the streets and thinking "it's nice > here, but it's nice in Minneapolis too"... Shhh, don't tell my mentor but I'd rather be planning to visit England again and this time Scotland too! If it weren't for the artsy significance of France I'd never go... as it is, the idea of actually seeing where Corot painted his landscapes is irresistible. And we'll be visiting the Louvre & Musee d'Orsay as well, and just watch out when I find some really inspiring Degas, Sisleys, Morisots, or Bonnards ~ the happy dance just has to follow... > I sang Surface of the Moon so much that one guy even asked what song I was > singing and who it was by, saying he was going to napster them when we got > home. That's our girl, seeking out converts even in foreign lands! LOL! It's dirty (but so are most big cities) and there always seem to be hundreds of African gentlemen trying to sell you junk necklaces whenever you sit down outside a bar or visit any of the tourist attractions. Plus the drivers there are crazy - try finding a car without a dent. I certainly don't find Paris romantic - though it IS supposed to be the city of romance. Give me Amsterdam any day! But it was great to meet Leah in London - it's a shame we didn't have longer. And if you can slip away for a few hours and come over here Susan (or maybe we could get a cheap Eurostar trip to Paris) we'd really love to meet you too!
