[Jennifer Woyan Subject: OV: Another great web idea for band promotion.... Tuesday, March 06 03:51 p.m. Even though alternative pop band Weezer haven't released a record since 1996, their packed show at New York City's Roseland Ballroom last night wasn't a fluke. Weezer sold out their entire 20-city tour of venues -- ranging between 3,500 and 8,500 seats -- thanks to Yahoo. Using targeted banner ads and e-mails (sorted by age and hometown), the Yahoo Outloud tour sold every seat without spending a dime on offline promotion like radio ads or posters. Typically, concert tickets are offered 10 weeks before a show. But Yahoo started pitching Weezer last fall even though the tour didn't start until two weeks ago. Despite all the recent pessimism about online advertising, Yahoo's campaign paid off. "We proved that this is an effective response mechanism that drives an audience to purchase things," said Tiffany Hein, brand manager of Yahoo Music. In other good news for Weezer, Pepsi and Hewlett Packard recently signed on as additional tour sponsors. ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V3 #65 *********************************
