I too have not heard this song, I even went to Napster and downloaded it to be sure - I have subsequently deleted t from my drive so as not to infringe copyright laws! I figure it must be a stateside kinda thing. I finally got round to watching my tape of it last night and noticed a familiar looking drummer lurking in the shadows behind Nik Kershaw! Don't think I would have noticed him at all if it hadn't been for Jane's research throwing up the fact that Mark used to play in Nik's backing band. Anyway, a couple of minutes of thinking lead me to dig out some old videos - I remember Nik Kershaw playing Live Aid at Wembley, and sure enough, there is Mark drumming away at the back of stage! The set was pretty good too - in tune, together and getting the crowd going. It's made me realise I've really underestimated Mark's career (and Kris's come to that) before joining Del Amitri - in fact Mark was known as the ex-drummer from 'Right Said Fred'. But they've both been around the block - Mark was in All About Eve for a long while. I wonder just how much influence their various experiences brings to Del Amitri. Would the new album sound the same if Dave Cummings, or Ashley, or Paul Tyagi were still in the band? And how Mark is ever going to top the live experience of playing to 2 billion people at the greatest rock concert ever held is beyond me. Makes me think of 'stream-of-conciousness' style of writing. You just start writing whatever is on your mind, then the second the thoughts change you change what you're writing... it ends up being an interesting insight into how the mind works. Every little distraction that pulls you away, you note... Like in this part: "The studio. A place of much quiet muttering interrupted by occasional organized noise. Pianos and guitars park themselves around the room's edge, backs to the ochre walls trying to keep out of a drum kit's hair. Rubber leads worm across a polished parquet floor, microphones teeter on skinny black legs like spacecraft on cranes. An oriental rug clings to the ceiling as if the Black Crows left here at zero gravity. My friends and I in Teaneck, New Jersey are making recordings and soundings, bangs followed by a great many whimpers..." This doesn't sound much like a location that encourages creativity: the rug on the ceiling? Its quiet here, interrupted by occasional organized noise? Teetering mikes and wormy leads?? What a visual he's created here. I thought Justin's writing was absolutely fascinating: its a poet & musician in a technological world. And I love this: "Boxes and boxes of chippy machines whir frenetically with all this computation and this sound has become like crickets chirruping in a meadow to us. We are now so naturalized, so acclimatized, so adapted to this environment that I wear a wig of wire and Iain and Mark sport circuits for spectacles. This is evolution of course, leaving Andrew and Kris floundering amongst the primordial soup of wooden things with strings like a pair of fidgety jellyfish. For every record must have its sting. The Police knew this and so do we." So is evolution a good thing? I suspect Justin might prefer to be in the soup with Andy and Kris strumming his own wooden thing with strings, instead of becoming acclimatized to the contemporary. (Acclimatized?? Oh, but I love it when he uses big words especially when it makes me wonder if the words actually exist. This one does! ) I'm waiting for another diary entry, how 'bout choo... I wouldn't put them in the same category as the Romantics at all....other than the ability to remind one of a time long gone. Musically, they're not in the same genre at all! I think the Romantics were just fluff, judging by what I heard. TWS on the other hand, wrote great pop songs, had loads of fun, and had great lyrics, too...not to mention being the nicest guys in the biz followed closely by the Dels, of course. :-) Funny that you should mention TWS, really, 'cause I'm listening to one of their CDs now, the remastered "Never Loved Elvis" complete with "Size of a Cow" :-) I guess listening to them doesn't necessarily remind me of anything or any time in particular because, as with the Dels, they've been on heavy rotation in my CD and tape players for years.
