Shall we all leave so you and Sandro can get better acquainted? ;-))) No seriously, I know of at least two transcontinental relationships which have happened via this list. And a lot of friendships have been struck up. I have already met at least 9 OV'ers from North America, and others from mainland Europe. Others join us on our weekly Thursday chat as well - and contrary to the opinion of some we don't just talk about the Dels!!! If fact we barely mention them unless something's happened. And I'm sure those of you who have visited us here in the UK will vouch for the fact that we're a pretty hospitable bunch and you'll always find a bed or a sofa over here if anyone wants to come and stay. (And a lift to gigs if you want to come over for the tour). Cheers Jane ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 09:47:13 -0000 From: "Jane Armstrong" Subject: OV: Australia The band have said on several occasions that the place they most want to tour, apart from Europe and the US, is Australia. They had a great time last tour, and really want to go back again. And there are obviously loads of Delfans in Oz. Emma Dick, who used to be on this list, went over to Oz for a year and kept meeting Delfans wherever she went - and those who didn't know them, she converted. :-) However, it's all up to the promoters. They're the ones who have to fund the tour - which they won't do unless they are certain not to make a loss. To take the Dels on an Australian tour would cost megabucks, though they'd more than likely hire most of the gear over there rather than ship it over. So....... once there is a date for the new album it's up to all of you in Australia to contact any promoters you know of, get the venues interested in booking them, call the radio stations and get the Dels played and buy extra copies of the album for your auntie, sister, and the guy who runs the chipshop. (And if there are extra tracks on it in Oz as there were on SOSP you can buy extra copies to send over to us! I'm sure we can provide a decent trade or something.) If enough people show enough interest then the promoters will have to listen to you! Jane (Oops! I promised not to post again this weekend. Sorry!!!) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 08:53:37 EST From: SngWrite1@aol.com Subject: OV: good things down under, other stuff To our Austrailian/New Zealand friends: At least YOU get the new Neil Finn record in a few weeks. Not even a release date (or label) for us poor folks in the US yet. And of course, it's being reviewed as his BEST EVER!!! Thank G-d for HMV Austrailia! And far as the single US women go... where are they? I've been on the Del Amitri mailing list for a loooooong time (since it was just 20 people's emails CC'd together) and have not received any matchmaking help from it! OTHER STUFF I just hope that Interscope doesn't pull an Aimee Mann on Del Amitri. She had pretty much finished her album (Bachelor No. 2) for them and had turned it in, only to be told that there was no single and she was being dropped. Then they made her buy back the record she had just finished. They did the same thing to Ron Sexsmith. Sony did the same thing to Peter Stuart (of Dog's Eye View). The late Josh Clayton Felt had similar problems with his record company refusing to give back his (as yet unreleased) record. Aimee Mann triumphed in the end, selling boatloads of her new record and the Magnolia soundtrack. So Universal (part of Interscope) put together the "Ultimate Collection" of songs from her first two records without her consent to capitalize on her new found success. I hate to be Mr. Negative but I don't think Interscope has any clue what to do with Del Amitri - heck they even fumbled the new Wallflowers record (which I thought was pretty damn good) and that should have been a no brainer. Okay back to happy thoughts... new Del Amitri album... new b-sides... new tour... Australia, hmmmm??? I'm stationed in (waaaaay) eastern Russia so I think I'm closest geographically, but logistically... Still, only one time zone difference! I've been doing my best to expose virtually everyone who is in my presence for more than 5 minutes to the dels, so it isn't *totally* a wasteland of Tupac and Metallica (and, god forbid, Madonna's American Pie). If I hear "Stan" by Eminem one more time, I going to stuff myself in the trunk and drive off a bridge. I use a lot of the dels in my classes about imagery and metaphor and how language can be visual in order to communicate (not exactly the most exciting topic - I can hear all of you snoring already...), so to read the semantic dissections that have been going on has been quite interesting. One Thing Left To Do produced a lot of interesting perspectives in my advanced class - some thought it was a suicide note, some thought it was left on an answering machine, one guy thought it was a tape (sent to the object of adoration) that she's listening to and realizing he's dead (an Eminem fan - go figure). What surprised me was just how many of the men in class found this romantic! We quickly moved on... They particularly liked the line in SOSP about it not being a sin to drink when you're suffering... Anyway, if there ever *is* a gathering in Australia, let me know! :) Claire ===== - - Just give me the coffee and nobody gets hurt. Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! And I didn't mean to imply that the Wallflowers had been dropped by Interscope - it's just that I haven't really seen them promoting the album at all. There was decent build up and good press about the record, but then after it was released they just seemed to move on. The band didn't do much of a tour (in fact they played most of the shows before the record was out), and there is only one gig on their current schedule. So it's partially the band's fault for keeping out on the road. I also wanted to mention David Gray. I've been a fan of his for a long long time (he's on record #5 already - many people think White Ladder is his debut). He was dropped by his label after his third record and made White Ladder for almost no money and put it out himself. Now it's been picked up by some larger labels for distribution all around the world and he's got a huge hit on his hands (he just sold out the Riviera Theatre in Chicago, where the Dels have played, in 15 minutes). So of course, his previous label is now rushing his earlier albums back into print to get some more money out of someone they didn't want. I just hope that the Dels come out with a truly awesome album. Because, to be honest SOSP was a let down for me. I still think it's their worst sounding record (overly compressed - especially coming after their biggest sounding record with Twisted) and there are some truly mediocre songs on it (by Del Amitri standards). There, I said it - come and get me! Dave ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 16:09:32 EST From: SngWrite1@aol.com Subject: OV: Discuss Geez, no posts forever and now you can't shut me up. Here's a topic for conversation: Using only the singles from an album, substitute the songs you don't like on the album, replacing them with b-sides. For Example: To make my version of SOSP I would eliminate Cruel Light Of Day and replace it with Spare Pair Of Laces. Out goes Funny Way To Win, in comes A Grimace Not A Smile. Instead of going Through All That Nothing I'll wake up with Sleep Instead Of Teardrops. And Lucky Guy turns out not to be so lucky because he's out Before The Evening Steals The Afternoon comes in. (I'd remix the whole thing too!) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 16:35:58 -0500 (EST) From: Mitch Subject: Re: OV: Clearing up/stirring up > I just hope that the Dels come out with a truly awesome album. The band are all very enthusiastic about it - but we'll have to wait and see what we ultimately think. I have a strange relationship with SOSP - sometimes I like it but often I *really* don't. There are a bit too many smoochy songs for my taste - and I can't stand Won't Make It Better, Mothers Nature's Writing and Through All That Nothing most of the time. But there are also some real blinders IMHO - like Cruel Light of Day, High Times and NWIA is a really good bouncy pop song. What I Think She Sees is great live. Must say I would tend to agree with Dave about subsituting song of the weaker tracks with B sides - but I'd definitely keep Cruel Light of Day on!
