In the absence of the Dels over the last couple of years, I've become rather fond of this band, and would recommend them to Dels fans. Talk about Lads! I think they should have been in Men Behaving Badly. I agree with Hilary - it's very brave of them to show us pics of them looking like that. I've a really terrible one of Mark pulling a strange face, which I would never dare share - because I don't like to put photos of them on the net which might cause them embarassment - but they obviously don't mind these! I have a tape of a very old radio interview somewhere, where Justin talks about his father being a conductor of classical and choral music with some big orchestra and choir. I've just found the following on www.travelscotland.co.uk Does anyone know if this is Justin's dad? "Another highlight on the classical front is the Perth Festival Opera productions, conducted and directed by John Currie. Since 1986, the former Musical Director and Conductor of the Los Angeles Master Chorale and Sinfonia of Los Angeles, has successfully conducted all of Perth Festival Opera productions including a series of Mozart Operas (Figaro, Cosi fan tutte, Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute). This year's piece is the final part of a Britten Church trilogy started in 1992 with Curlew River, which was followed in 1994 by The Burning Fiery Furnace and now completed with The Prodigal Son. As well as the opera production, John Currie will also conduct an evening of choral and organ music by Brickner, Bach and Britten. To which I would say that I agree about skipping Billy, but I don't agree that the Wilco stuff is all that great. There are some tracks that I really like, others I don't care for as well. In general, I think that both of the Wilco/Bragg collaborations are a bit weak, and that Mermaid Avenue is better than the second release- (can't remember it's name right now). All that said, the idea behind both of those albums is pretty cool- all of those songs were created from Woody Guthrie poetry that Tweedy, Bragg and Wilco put to music. Personally, I would recommend Wilco's "A.M.," (1995), as the place to start. It's very rootsy. Lots of acoustic instrumention, and when the electric guitars come into the mix, it's like Crazy Horse or the Stones or the Faces just walked into the room. Their second release, "Being There," (1996), was quite a bit more difficult for me to grasp. However, that could be a personal problem. "Summerteeth," (1999), sounds like somewhere along the way, songwriter Jeff Tweedy discovered the Beatles for the first time. Not a back discovery to make. Forgot to go back and pick it up, but it was Scottish >orchestra stuff. I assumed it was his dad. Actually, since my previous email I've found a CD of carols listed on the net of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Chorus (which is the name they mentioned in the interview) conducted by John Currie. But there is no mention of him on their website http://www.rsno.org.uk/newindex.asp. There is also a young percussionist called Colin Currie with the same orchestra. http://www.intermusica.co.uk/artist/currie.html There are several mentions of a Scottish choir called the John Currie singers as well - don't know if this is the same person, but they appear to have commissioned a vast number of works by modern Scottish composers, and John Currie has written the liberetto for at least one of them. Also, there's a mention of the Leicester University Opera - the brainchild of Roger Warren and John Currie (then the Director of Music at the University of Leicester). Didn't Justin grow up in Leicester? Must be his dad here too. And there are some sleeve notes for an album of traditional Scottish music written by a John Currie here http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/notes/67106.html and a Songs of Scotland CD with John Currie conducting the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. I've also seen the same John Currie from the Perth article mentioned in connection with the Berkshire Choral Festival in Massachusetts. I think they may be two different conductors with the same name, but this John Currie was a Scotsman and was with the LA Sinfonia from 1986-91 - so could well be the same guy. There's also a bluegrass singer called John Currie. Seems like the Currie Clan have a strong musical heritage. Can't you tell I'm bored today! :-) >RE: new photos. Ali's right, Darren is not only marvelous he's quite good-looking too. When a bunch of us OVers met in Chicago back in ~ what was it, 1998? ~ we were all having dinner one night at the Duke of Perth when the two old married Southern Broads (that's me and Teresa in case you hadn't guessed) realized how many fine-looking single folks were sitting at that table and our matchmaking antennae were just a buzzin'! We schemed privately how to match some of these wonderful souls up, but unfortunately the gents were quite outnumbered by the beautiful ladies and we never could work any magic. And now one of the gents, 'AndrewFromAnnArbor' Metz is married to the lovely Libby so that leaves even less gents in need of a sweetheart. That still leaves Darren plus two other good-looking & remarkably smart fellows (shall I mention names, gentlemen??) unless they've found their True Loves & are keeping it a secret like CERTAIN OTHER OV'ERS ARE DOING & YES I MEAN YOU * YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. The second album is "Mermaid Avenue II." ;) I love them both. The albums have different feels to them, but Wilco did a lot more on the 2nd cd and Bragg on the first to contribute that. I thought there were some really pretty, very cool songs on both of them. ("At My Window Sad and Lonely," "California Stars," "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key," "Birds and Ships") >Personally, I would recommend Wilco's "A.M.," (1995), as the place to > >start. Good choice, but I think it's their weakest album. It's good, in as much as it doesn't really depart from the Uncle Tupelo tradition. So of course the music is brilliant, but just what seems like Tweedy being exactly where he was. >Their second release, "Being There," (1996), was quite a bit more > >difficult for me to grasp. However, that could be a personal problem. Which is my favorite. *grin* This is the album that made me fall head over heels in love with them. Especially the first cd. "Monday" makes me so when I'm singing along. So does "Outta Site (outta mind)," and "What's the World Got in Store" is just soooo pretty. >"Summerteeth," (1999), sounds like somewhere along the way, songwriter > >Jeff Tweedy discovered the Beatles for the first time. This is Wilco taking a chance and really heading toward hitting their stride. josh. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V3 #47 *********************************
