I've never heard of the Suburbs (clearly my musical knowledge is tres limited), but as far as the Replacements are concerned, I can only respond to your comment with: WHAT??!!! The Replacements, IMO, were the forefathers of what we, today, call alternative rock. The first time I heard Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Matchbox 20, and the Goo Goo Dolls, I definitely heard Mats influences. (In fact, when I first the Goo Goo Dolls, I could have sworn that it was Westerberg singing!) I don't know if any of these bands have ever said that the Mats were influences, but I'd bet that they were. Personally, I think Paul Westerberg is a genius songwriter (like our Justin), and I can't quite figure out how it is that he's not a HUGE star. As for the Mats' live shows, I can understand finding them a little unnerving -- after all, you never really knew what you were in for: they could either be a very tight band or a bunch of drunks lunging around the stage. For me, either show was a delight, and it was a sad, sad day when they broke up. The Suburbs rock. Check out either "Ladies and Gentleman, The Suburbs Have Left the Building" (their greatest hits cd) or "Viva! Suburbs! Live at First Avenue." Chan Poling (of the Suburbs) played piano on "Sixteen Blue" if you check out the liner notes for "let it be." >The Replacements, IMO, were the forefathers of what we, today, call >alternative rock. And Rzenik (sp) name drops the 'Mats every chance he gets. As for the others, Kurt Cobain talked about how big the Pixies were as an influence on him, so undoubtedly the 'Mats were too to some extent. >Personally, I think Paul Westerberg is a genius songwriter (like our > >Justin), and I can't quite figure out how it is that he's not a HUGE > >star. (Check out any of Slim Dunlap or Tommy Stinson's post-'Mats stuff as proof. Brilliance.) And I have some live bootlegs which are tight, fast, brilliant performances. Agreed. And then there's performances along the lines of "The Shit Hits the Fans." Heh. But still, amazing songwriter. Long live all of them. josh. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Feb 2001 17:01:45 -0000 From: Hopping James W Subject: OV: RE: Re: OT The Replacements Another band of that ilk were Killing Joke.
