There appears to be a Celtic music celebration - they claim to be playing the best of Scottish music. I've not heard any Dels yet, but I've been in and out of the office and may have missed them. They've got people like Eddi Reader and Boo Hewardine (getting around a bit isn't he!), Brian Kennedy, Hue and Cry, Ricky Ross (Deacon Blue) Janis Ian and Hobotalk playing live. Interesting to note that both Hue and Cry and Deacon Blue are about to release an album, after gaps of 5 and 7 years respectively. Richard Allinson was giving them grief about where they've been for the past few years. Sounds like there could be a mini revival of Glasgow bands this year - - here's hoping anyway! There's about another half an hour to go - you can catch it on http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/, where there is a live webcast. (and now my darn browser has crashed!) And for those who don't know, Mick Slaven was a member of Del Amitri for one album, and only a handful of shows (I think!). He took Bryan Tolland's spot after Bryan's departure. It'd be nice to get a photo of him, so we know what he looks like. I've been unsuccessful in trying to track one down. I saw Ricky Ross doing a solo gig last July - and though he was good, he really needed the rest of the band behind him IMHO. It was just him completely alone when we saw him. We used to have the Deacon Blue webmaster on this list I think.... When I was younger, my friends and I had a lot of fun with Sting and the Police, trying to identify a particular pattern in his songs and then all the songs that contained that pattern. Like, do you know how many songs the line "it's a big enough umbrella, but it's always me that ends up getting wet" is in? It's insane. I say we play that game with Del songs. I'll start. the line: "g-d knows / you know you need her everyday" (I know it's a stretch, but they sound like they're on purpose, considering that Angel on the roof doesn't contain the line, so having it as a weird refrain at the end makes sense if it's referring to another song.) songs: Angel on the Roof, Hammering Heart Now you guys go! I've been unsuccessful in trying to track one down. > I'll send you separately a very old photo with Mick in it (1988). I've also remembered the name of the website for Deacon Blue, which is run by Neil, who's also a Del Amitri fan. He used to be linked to Kev's site when we had the "post your own link" section up. The site is called Glasgow Skyline, and the URL is http://www.g-skyline.freeserve.co.uk/ There are some photos there - but wouldn't have recognised Mick - he's shaved his hair for starters. This is what Mick has to say for himself: "Date of joining the band : April 1999 I first met Ricky and Lorraine back in '87 when I was with a rockin' outfit called the Jazzateers who had just been dropped by MCA for reasons to numerous to mention. They asked me to play guitar on Lorraines upcoming demo sessions for CBS.Ricky produced the sessions which included the songs written by Lorraines brother John, and Ewen played the bass.Deacon Blue were up and running with their first album about to appear so lorraine decided to join up with them putting the solo career on hold, and I started working for Del Amitri who shortly afterwards signed to A&M. Over the next few years I left the Dels to concentrate on writing, put my own band 'The Leopards" together and became involved in a number of projects for independent companies such as Postcard, Marina and Creeping Bent. In '94 Ricky contacted me and asked me to play on his forthcoming solo record for Epic. After two sunny months in LA the result was 'What You Are' possibly not the most commercially successful project, but in terms of enjoyment for us, hard to beat. I went back and put out The Leopards LP 'They Tried Staying Calm' on Creeping Bent while Ricky did his solo acoustic 'New Recording' record for Internazionale. After his initial tour, which he did alone. I joined him to fill out the sound and to provide drinking company between sets.Jim and Lorraine joined us for some of the larger shows in Glasgow and Edinburgh and when Deacon Blue reformed shortly afterwards for a couple of charity shows, Ricky asked me to sit in.... Mick Slaven 1999" I only ever saw Deacon Blue once - I was really looking forward to seeing them perform at Reading Festival but two songs in Lorraine got hit by a bottle or a can (which was fairly much par for the course at Reading in 1988), and her face was cut so they cut short their set. Shame. However in my car I've got: Riding with The King - BB King and Eric Clapton Sailing To Philadelphia - Mark Knopfler Waking Hours - Del who? Parachutes - Coldplay I've a couple of other CD's in there - but keep skipping between the four above. These have all been in my car for several months and I've been playing them over and over again. Not sure whether it's because I like them so much or if it's because I'm incredibly lazy. Jane (Gad, Saturday night TV is such CRAP!!!! However, they're also doing the Royal Albert Hall- my favourite of the larger London venues . If they can disappear from view for so many years and STILL get an Albert Hall gig there's hope for another Dels gig there. Fingers crossed........ Watching The Practice one night, ABC took "yellow" and did a little star commercial montage. After I saw that commercial, I started hearing "coming up, new Coldplay. We're gonna do yellow" on radio stations and stuff. Am I right to assume they are relatively unknown, or have I just missed the boat (wouldn't be the first time...) and if they are relatively unknown, was the song played and then put on ABC, vice versa, or was this some sort of cosmic coincidence? As far as cds...I have a stupid one discer here, but I got to play with my parents 5 disc changer when I was home for christmas. It was a good time. I'm so behind...I never listen to cool new stuff...just the ones I've been listening to forever. The most current 5 cds sharing time in the dorm room are: Twisted: Del Amitri Synchronicity: The Police Learning to Breathe: Switchfoot Hey You, I love your Soul: Skillet Mad Season: matchbox twenty Leah, who knows that the Sting line Allison mentioned was in Oh My God, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, and Seven Days ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
